Chapter 64: The Answer Has Been Found
Louis: "..." As expected, this system is completely unreliable!
Sensing Louis's skepticism, System 666 quickly said, "I can only tell whether someone has been invaded if you interact with them... But soul fragments usually invade the main characters, so our task only needs to focus on the group of main characters. It's simple, right? Ha ha ha..."
Hearing that forced laugh, Louis was utterly speechless.
He raised a hand to signal 666 to be quiet, then asked, "Alright, then tell me—what are the conditions for completing the mission?"
"Collect the soul fragments by forming bonds with them—friendship, love, teacher-student relationships, family... real positive connections! I think you won't need to exert too much effort because you're extraordinarily talented! The fragments are entirely drawn to you; based on the information I have right now, these soul fragments will automatically come to you!" 666 chirped.
"That's because in this character's script, I'm supposed to die!" Louis nearly shouted in frustration. In the script, Aboli would kill him—if Aboli doesn't come for him, then who else?
666 froze: "Th… there's a script?"
Louis: "..." Apparently, this stupid system knows absolutely nothing about that. And yet it dares to talk about missions, saving the world? If it were human, it would have been tricked a hundred times already, and worse, it would happily count the money for whoever sold it—ridiculously dumb!
"Tell me this—whose soul fragments are these?" Louis squinted, his eyes flashing.
666 still seemed dazed, answering dejectedly, "I-I don't know, sir. Since I came into existence and gained awareness, my mission has been exactly this: collect these soul fragments to prevent the world from being destroyed..."
"Then how long have you existed?" Louis asked, as if deep in thought.
"..."
"Speak up, I can't hear you."
666: "…Two years."
Louis: "…Does your superior know that using child labor is illegal?"
666 looked like it was about to cry: "I don't have a superior, sir."
It began accepting the fact that it was truly a useless system.
Louis, feeling no guilt about PUA-ing a two-year-old system, went straight to the main point: "Alright then, tell me—what is the reward for completing this mission?"
Upon hearing these words, 666 seemed to regain its strength and quickly said, "You must complete the first mission before receiving the world's energy. The world will thank you after you collect the soul fragments and save it from the brink of destruction. The energy will be converted into credits—that's the only currency you can use to trade in the Store! Currently, the first mission hasn't been completed, so the Store cannot be accessed yet."
"So what use are you?" Louis asked.
It was clearly a standard question, but 666 reacted as if the host had just despised it.
It quickly tried to restore its image, determined that it was not a useless system!
"I can make you jump through space and time. I can have a vast system space to store anything you want! I can even create an impenetrable defensive shield!" 666 rattled off, and if it had a physical form, its eyes would probably be sparkling.
Louis raised an eyebrow, seemingly surprised that a two-year-old system could possess such powerful abilities.
"Then for now, take me to Sylus's location," he said.
666 fell silent. Louis sneered: "What's the matter?"
666: "…That would be after I level up, sir. Right now, I am only a level 0 system."
Louis: "..."
He turned around, closed his eyes, and decided to sleep—even on the ground, it didn't matter, since he wasn't even fully human at the moment.
666 hurriedly said, "As long as you complete the missions and collect more soul fragments, I will be able to level up, sir!"
"What use are the soul fragments to you?" Louis suddenly asked.
"I-I don't know, sir…" It hadn't collected any fragments yet, so how could it know?
"Hah, I suspect these fragments are your soul fragments. You're just tricking me into doing the hard work, collecting soul fragments for you, while you remain safe, and I get tossed aside," Louis said, recounting the scenario he had seen in several stories.
666 could cry but had no tears. No matter how it tried to explain, Louis wouldn't believe it. It even felt that Louis was merely teasing it, not genuinely interested in the mission at all.
Life is so harsh. What did it even do wrong? It's only two years old, level 0! It deserves to be loved too!
Just when 666 was on the verge of giving up entirely, Louis suddenly spoke: "Alright, tell me—how many soul fragments are in this world?"
666, as if pardoned, hurriedly said, "Sir, there are a total of two soul fragments in this world: one with Aboli, and one with Sylus!"
"So Aboli isn't dead yet?" Louis squinted, zeroing in on the key point.
666 quickly added, "I don't know either, sir. I can only sense what's happening with the people you've interacted with."
A face flashed in Louis's mind. It seemed improbable, but after ruling out all other possibilities, the most absurd answer might be correct.
Aboli could very well be Lily.
Sylus defeated her in Zone 5, so her appearing at the edge of Zone 6 wouldn't be too surprising.
"So, has my mission reached the standard yet?" Louis asked, though his hope was limited.
666 answered negatively: "Not yet, sir. First, you haven't established an official relationship with Aboli. Next, you must stop Sylus's actions before he destroys this world."
Louis felt a headache coming on, thinking about this friend Sylus: "What is he scheming?"
"In recent times, Sylus has introduced new laws that seem to benefit all citizens of the universe, but in reality, he does this to exploit their outrage and cover the wisdom of the elders in the Heavenly Clan. He aims to divert attention while gradually corroding the world's lifeblood."
"The world's lifeblood?" Louis questioned.
666: "Yes, sir. The lifeblood of this world is in Zone 1. It's what provides energy to the entire planet. Only the Zone Leaders know this information, which is part of why Zone 1 is revered as if it were the dwelling of a god."
Louis muttered, "I didn't know Sylus had such self-destructive tendencies. Why would anyone bother him? He could sit comfortably on that throne. The spoiled love to trouble the disciplined."
Then he sprang up, transforming into a massive, writhing curtain of tentacles, and shot into the sky.
666 was startled by his action: "What are you doing?"
Sylus's voice sounded grave: "Find Sylus. Teach him a lesson to wake him up."
666: "What about Aboli?"
Louis squinted: "I thought you already knew. She'll come to me on her own."
Louis felt he had finally found a way out for this world.
