Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Conquering Zoe and Tanya
Luke raised an eyebrow but remained unfazed. "You're a guardian of the ancient Snake Totem, aren't you? Monarch-level creatures may protect you, but they're not here now, are they?"
Tanya's protests turned into pleas, her voice breaking. "Please… don't…"
A single tear slipped down Tanya's cheek, trailing past her beauty mark before falling onto her neck. The sight of it was enough to ignite Luke's determination.
As the early sun rose, Luke stood atop the mountain, staring into the horizon. His expression was a mix of satisfaction and contemplation.
[Ding! Congratulations, host, for successfully conquering Zoe. Reward: double the magic of the fire attribute.]
[Ding! Congratulations, host, for successfully conquering Tanya. Reward: a vein of flames with a potential Fire Soul Seed.]
Luke sighed, shaking his head. Despite the rewards, neither of them was pregnant. "What bad timing… both of them must have been in their safe period."
But there was no time to dwell on this. Though the immediate crisis was resolved, Luke knew the world of demons was far crueler than that of humans. He needed to grow stronger—reaching the Monarch level was the only way to feel secure.
With one last howl, Luke spread his wings and flew into the sky, his resolve growing stronger with each beat of his heart.
"Howl!!"
"Howl!!"
"Howl!!"
The howls of wolves echoed throughout the valley, one after another.
After a night of running, Luke's demon wolf pack finally returned to their den nestled within the mountains.
A wolf beast with snow-white fur and dark black bone spurs approached the foot of the mountain where Luke stood. It howled up at him several times, the sounds carrying a tone of distress and complaint.
Luke gazed down at the wolf, observing it carefully. Its appearance suggested it was an advanced form of the One-Eyed Demon Wolf—a Bone-Spur Wolf. However, there was something different about this one. While common Bone-Spur Wolves had black and white fur with pure white bone spurs, this one had pure black bones contrasting sharply against its white fur.
"A mutant," Luke noted to himself, "and at the advanced warrior level."
In this state, with some more spiritual resources, it might have the potential to be promoted to commander level.
"I didn't expect one of my subordinates to possess such rare qualities," Luke thought, a hint of admiration in his eyes.
"What's the matter?" Luke asked, responding to the wolf's howls.
Given his status as the Skywing Wolf commander, this wolf was likely his second-in-command—a valuable ally to nurture for the future.
The second-in-command whimpered a few times, then turned and fell backward, exposing a burnt area on its belly. The wounds were severe, with charred fur and scorched skin—a clear indication of a powerful fire magic attack.
"These burns..." Luke murmured, concern evident in his voice. "Who did this to you?"
There was only one person in Silvercrest City with the ability to inflict such damage on his wolves—the Chief Instructor, Zach.
"Unbelievable," Luke growled. "I ordered a retreat to avoid unnecessary conflict, and yet he dares to attack my people?"
Anger surged within him. Luke had pulled back his forces because he didn't want to harm innocent lives, nor did he wish for his wolf pack to suffer meaningless casualties. He had hoped that his gesture would be understood, or at least that hostilities would cease.
"But even after I conceded, he continues to hunt us down," Luke thought bitterly. "This cannot be tolerated."
With determination in his eyes, Luke spread his massive wings, preparing to take flight.
The second-in-command looked up, seemingly surprised by Luke's immediate reaction. It hurriedly rolled over and pointed with its muzzle in a specific direction, letting out a low growl.
Luke followed the direction indicated and spotted, not far away, a burly man clad in a military coat. His face was stern and resolute, and he hovered in the air using wind magic—Zach.
"He's still pursuing us," Luke noted.
Zach's wind magic was only at the initial high level, allowing him to fly but not at great speeds. He couldn't catch up with Luke when he flew at full speed.
Having lost track of Luke earlier, Zach had resorted to targeting the demon wolves, hoping to draw Luke out or find clues about his whereabouts.
During this period, Zach had engaged in several skirmishes with the vigilant Bone-Spur Wolf. If not for his wind magic aiding his mobility, he might have been overwhelmed by the wolves.
"The Skywing Wolf has returned," Zach observed from atop a sturdy tree branch, his eyes fixed on Luke. "What on earth is going on?"
He pondered the situation, his mind filled with questions.
"First, Zoe must be a very special student for the Skywing Wolf to capture her," Zach thought. "But what's the motive? Is the Skywing Wolf acting on instinct, or is it being manipulated? Could the Black Church be involved, or perhaps another organization?"
