Chapter 29: Chapter 28: Secrets of Snowpeak
A wild vortex of wind emerged to counter-inject a volley of flaming projectiles that exploded back in the direction of the Inferno Wolves, cutting a swathe through the bewildered pack, whose bodies now littered the burnt ground; only a few wolves surged back, fighting to regroup.
Tina blinked, wide-eyed with astonishment. "You're incredible..." she mumbled, gazing at Luke as if he were one of those storybook heroes.
Luke smirked, but his gaze remained on the all-too-quick-hop of the other Inferno Wolves. The Cursed Constellation started lighting up, the dark purple stars burning ominously.
"Spider's Grasp—Soul Shackle!"
Tendrils of dark energy erupted from the ground, ensnaring the surviving Inferno Wolves. Their anguished howls echoed as the curse drained their very essence, leaving their bodies lifeless.
As the battle subsided, Luke raised his hand, absorbing the remnants of their spirits. The general-level spirits were weak but enough to throw a silent laison in the surface of his soul power.
Tina's awe deepened more as she saw Luke effortlessly unleash his might. "W-Who are you?" she asked, a blend of awe and curiosity in her voice. "I've never seen magic like that before."
"Luke," he said curtly, brushing soot from his clothes. "And you?"
"Tina Baine," was the response, pride making her puff out her chest. "I come from the Northern Military Region. My grandfather is General Baine."
Luke raised an eyebrow. "Oh, so you're military brat? What are you doing here up in the Nanling Mountains?"
A bit of her pride faltered. "Uh…I'm training for Pearl Academy," she said with a sigh. "Granddad thought that it would be good for me."
Luke snickered. "How is that going?"
Tina crossed her arms defiantly and puffed out her cheeks. "It's not my fault that the Inferno Wolves ambushed me! Besides, I thought the Skywing Wolf was the most cowardly commander level demon of the region. I thought it would be safe here."
Luke froze, and his smirk died. "Coward?" he whispered dangerously low.
"Yeah," Tina continued, now unaware of his rising irritation. "They say he attacked Silvercrest City, but fled like a coward as soon as he knew he couldn't win. Honestly, what kind of commander does that?"
With great enthusiasm, Tina picked up her tale once again. Meanwhile, Luke, immersed in his thoughts, found it hard to listen. The attack by the Inferno Wolves was very systematic. This was not some random encounter. There seemed to be some kind of a program in their movements that Luke decided he would analyze.
"Wait here," Luke suddenly commanded, leaving Tina baffled and speechless.
Before she could question him, Luke opened his Wind Wings and took to the skies. The translucent appendages bore him up above the forest and enabled him to panorama.
In the distance, he spotted the Snowpeak Mountain Station. Smoke billowed from the outpost, and he could just hear the faint sounds of the battle. Straining his eyes, Luke recognized a gigantic wolf engulfed in purple flames—a Volcanic Poison Wolf, one of the leaders of the Inferno Wolf Clan.
This wolf was on the rampage, destroying the outskirts of the outpost with its fiery breath bringing buildings to ashes. There was a humanoid figure shrouded in crackling lightning above the fray, engaging the wolf in a fierce duel.
The eyes of Chloe Carter were fiery as she beheld the Volcanic Poison Wolf before her. With a death grip around the hilt of her summoned thunderblade, she was prepared to forge ahead for yet another strike. Tall and menacing, the poisonous wolf seemed to show little interest in whatever she was going to actually do.
"What is there about this place?" Chloe mumbled to herself. The Skywing Wolf attacked Silvercrest City, but the Inferno Wolf Clan appeared determined to destabilize Snowpeak Mountain Station. Very puzzling.
Snowpeak Mountain Station used to be a small post insignificant in the grand scheme of things in the Southern Military Region. Yet somehow, this place had turned out to be the hotspot of demonic attacks. What secrets lay in wait in this area?
Chloe narrowed her eyes at the Volcanic Poison Wolf, which had now caught up with the young girl held in its jaw, her limp body glowing faintly purple from the effects of the venom.
