Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Moulding the soul

Zach, there are too many totems involved. As such, you need to keep Luke's case absolutely confidential," Tanya Reed said, her gaze focused upon Luke's retreating figure.

The Totem Serpent was a constant source of contention among people like Victor Hale. For Luke, being exposed as a chief demon would be far more dangerous. Many from noble families would undoubtedly seek him out in order to enslave him as a contract beast. In terms of dignity, totem beasts were equal to the Holy Spirits of heaven and earth.

Sense Zach gave a resigned grin while standing among the wolf-demons. "Don't worry, Tanya. Enough in the know about totems- on their significance! There will be no leaking of this matter."

Watching him, Tanya nodded, satisfied after hearing Zach. He really did not seem like the sort to spill on Luke. Suddenly, her seriousness overcame her as she turned to Zoe Miller.

"Zoe, you need to know what I'm about to say applies to you, too. The moment you leave here, tell no one about Luke," Tanya cautioned.

Zoe gave her a curious look, surprised by Tanya's sudden shift in attitude; there had been a month of her being fully the protective, almost doting figure of Luke. It would not have escaped Zoe's attention that the paradigm had shifted drastically.

"Understood, Sister Tanya. I'd never do anything to harm Luke," Zoe replied, placing her hand on her abdomen.

"Tanya raised an eyebrow. Sister?"

Ah-! I meant Teacher Tanya, Zoe started to explain, covering her mouth.

Tanya waved it away. "It's all right if you call me sister. Luke did say I was the first wife and you were the second. Sister is, after all, not an unflattering term."

Zoe blushed a tad but nodded in affirmation. Tanya's acceptance of her status allowed no argument.

Back at the Flame Vein, thick scents of the Inferno Wolf's burning body lay around. After one month of flame intensive vatting, of the five spirit seeds, one became a larger fire core. As Luke guessed, there was a faraway possibility, even with some efforts, of one of them becoming a Soul Seed. Naturally, it would take, say, a minimum of one year for it to change.

"A year," Luke muttered while fanning his wings as he circled the vein. "Zoe's and Tanya's kids will be born by then."

He again felt his thoughts return to Raven. Hovering over the still body of the Inferno Wolf, which was now charred, Luke nonchalantly flipped Raven down onto the corpse with a claw.

"Do eat it, Raven," Luke commanded.

Raven was already skidding to a halt against the dying Inferno Wolf's body, but he scratches nervously at the earth while staring at the carcass. The corpse of a commander wolf was intimidating, nonetheless, it was dead. Raven's instincts begged him to run.

"What's the matter with you? It's dead!" Luke said fairly sternly while kicking a gust of wind with his wings to hoist Raven closer to the Inferno Wolf's body.

Raven twitched nervously with his wide round eyes, darting gazes between Luke and the corpse. After what seemed an eternity, the little wolf's awe became clear in his gaze. Luke softened a little but kept an authoritative side to him when he felt the little wolf's admiration.

"Very soon, the spirit of the Inferno Wolf will slip through your fingers," Luke warned as he opened up his claw, where a glowing essence was contained in its hold. Its weakly dulled fiery glow indicated might of a great measure within.

Raven seemed to understand. With a determined growl, he lunged and bit the Inferno Wolf in the chest. One last hoarse protest released it as Raven ripped the creature's heart out; that was the essence of its life force.

It was a quick affair. Within a few minutes, Raven consumed the Inferno Wolf's life essence, and its body started to absorb its strength.

Luke stepped forward, raising the Spirit Essence high. Its fiery red globe pulsed with intense life, its latent energy fighting against any restraint. Without a moment's hesitation, Luke flung the orb at Raven's forehead.

"Time to mold your soul," he said.

An instant later, as the essence hit Raven, his body twisted and twitched disconcertedly, crashing down before he started shaking on the ground, his body contorted under the pressure of the invading spirit. Painful howls echoed through the Flame Vein as Raven battled with the overwhelming influence of the Inferno Wolf's soul.

Luke was perceptive in watching. Soul integration was a hazardous affair. The displacing spirit was clawing for dominance over Raven, yearning to obliterate his soul. This would only depend on Raven's willpower and how far he could endure the cruelty.
