Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Mature Zoe
She stirred, mumbled something unintelligible, and slowly opened her eyes. She blinked a few times, and then her gaze fell on Luke.
"It wasn't a dream, was it?" came her muffled voice, still in the crusty softness of early awakening.
"No," Luke said with a slight smirk, "it's back to reality for you."
Zoe sighed and slowly sat up. "Well, if this is my new reality, I need breakfast." She gestured at the food in Luke's hands.
Luke laughed as he set the roasted rabbit and fruits next to her. "You're surprisingly adaptale."
Zoe was ravenous, her gnawing jaw chomping the rabbit leg. Between bites, she said, "I am afraid sure. But panic does not help. If you are not going to kill me, then I might as well live."
Her calm and practical nature caught Luke off guard. He leaned back against the cave wall and studied her. "You're either very brave or very smart."
"Both," Zoe replied, meeting his glance with a thin smile. "And you? What's your big plan? You didn't bring me and Tanya here just to cook breakfast for us."
Luke's expression became grave. "You'll know in due time. For now, eat."
While Zoe munched in silence, Luke was leaning back in quiet contemplation. The system had rewarded him for the earlier session-boying in seizing awakenances on psychic powers, it enhanced his Level 2 Field Control Demon Technique, Flame Vortex. The newfound moral power would make him dizzy. He could already feel a steady gain of self-control over the fire and wind elements.
"Zoe," Luke suddenly broke the silence.
She lifted her gaze, intrigued.
"You have talent. The fire element within you is not for show, yet with time, you could be far stronger than you are now."
Zoe raised an eyebrow. "Are you saying you are going to train me?"
"Something like that," Luke said in a sardonic tone. "I don't waste resources, Zoe; you will witness this yourself."
Zoe tilted her head and considered his words for a while. "Fine. But don't think that just because you're feeding me, I will trust you."
Luke burst into laughter, his deep voice reverberating through the cavern. "Alright, fair enough."
Later that day, Luke trekked to the Flame Vein Mountain. A passion of warm air lulled in its bowels, and it promised unbroken energy within.
He descended into the hidden cave that glowed with Fire Element Spirit Seeds. The largest, a Greater Spirit Seed, was glowing like a tiny sun, capital by fire energy.
"This will create a new definition," Luke stated, extending his hands toward the Spirit Seed. He felt so balanced, pushing himself slowly toward evolution into a Soul Seed.
As he held it, a thought struck him. The rewards from the system were based upon the abilities of those around him. The presence of Zoe, with her latent fire talent, contributed to the Flame Vortex spell he had.
"Interesting," thought Luke. "If I can put others' powers to my own use, then I can manipulate the rewards of the system."
The idea sparked a new determination. He intended to use all resources available to secure his position on high, be it either forging alliances or antagonizing competitors.
Returning to the cave, he found Zoe outside, looking at the horizon. She looked up when he approached; he couldn't read the expression in her face.
"What are you thinking, sitting out here?" Luke asked, sitting beside her.
Zoe took a moment before answering, "I am trying to grasp what you really want. You aren't like other demons, you think... like a human."
Luke's look softened. "Once I was human, but that is another story."
Zoe frowned. "What are you now, then?"
"Something more," Luke said simply.
There was silence between them for a while, full of doubtful thoughts left unsaid.
Meanwhile, in her own cave, Tanya paced about, her frustration boiling over. She hated the powerlessness of her situation, but what she hated even more, was uncertainty of Luke's aims ahead.
As Zoe entered, Tanya turned to her, "Zoe! Are you okay?"
"Yes," said Zoe in a steady tone. "I think he is trying to build something out of the whole mess—something bigger than just survival."
Tanya crossed her arms as a sign of doubt. "And you believe him?"
"I do not," Zoe replied. "But I believe he does. And that's dangerous in a different way."
Tanya sighed. "We should stay cautious. Whatever it is he plans, we cannot let our guard down." That night, Luke stood in the middle of his territory addressing the gathering of the wolves. Wolf One stood ramrod-straight as if standing in front of a drill sergeant, making sure that all the lower wolves stood in proper order.
"We have a great deal to protect," Luke began, his voice commanding. "The Flame Vein is our greatest asset. It is bound to attract enemies. But we shall be stronger together; none shall take what is ours."
The wolves howled in response, their loyalty unfaltering.
With the moon high up in the sky, Luke began thinking of Zoe and Tanya. They were integral pieces in his growing empire and he would make sure they knew their places someday.
"This is just the beginning," murmured Luke. "The world doesn't know it yet, but we're about to change everything."
