Chapter 142: I'll Let You Live a Little Longer
Before Han'er could speak, Wu Chang pledged his loyalty to the Soul Light Bishop and the Duke Luz inside the coach.
"Rest assured, my lords, as the Gravekeeper of Cemetery No. 44, I promise to find you both a most satisfactory burial spot, so you may rest in peace with a smile beneath the earth."
The Duke Luz, holding a high position, remained composed, but the Soul Light Bishop seemed a bit less at ease. He looked at Han'er and asked:
"Is this your successor?"
Han'er nodded and explained, "He is Sean, a very ambitious young man who is traveling the world and just happened to arrive in Mikel."
The expression of the Soul Light Bishop slightly improved; a foreigner unfamiliar with the language of the Mikel Kingdom made more sense.
Luz glanced at the moon; he didn't want to waste time on insignificant matters and urged, "We should begin."
The Soul Light Bishop understood and turned to the two, saying, "It's getting late. In a while, you'll lead the way. Stop when I say stop. Don't concern yourselves with what we're doing, and don't do anything unnecessary. Understood?"
Seeing Wu Chang and Han'er nod in agreement, the Soul Light Bishop ordered the knights to begin the operation.
Nine knights can be seen advancing to the small chapel near Cemetery No. 44, wielding their iron hammers and striking the thin walls of the chapel.
Wu Chang acted just like a responsible gravekeeper, expressing dissatisfaction, "Sigh, Bishop, what are they doing!"
The Soul Light Bishop glanced at Wu Chang and said with a blank expression, "Remember what I just said; don't concern yourself with what we're doing, just do your job."
Wu Chang shrugged, "Alright, you're the boss, I'll listen to you."
The nine strong knights quickly demolished the small chapel, clearing the construction debris and the bodies inside that hadn't yet been buried, continuing to hammer away at the chapel's floor.
As the floor shattered, a massive pit was revealed beneath, inside which lay ten stone coffins, crafted entirely to the specifications of the Eternal Stone Coffin within the Eternal Life Tomb Chamber.
Wu Chang looked at Han'er in confusion, silently asking what was going on.
Han'er shrugged, indicating he also didn't know.
The stone coffins inside the chapel seemed arranged from long ago, even before the emergence of the Soul Light Sect.
The knights dragged the stone coffins from the pit, tying them with iron chains to the back of the coach. Once everything was prepared, the Soul Light Bishop took out a map of Cemetery No. 44.
The map divided Cemetery No. 44 into ten sections, with eight marked by a prominent red X, leaving the two innermost sections unmarked.
The Soul Light Bishop instructed Wu Chang and Han'er to proceed towards the two unmarked areas.
Wu Chang and Han'er walked in front, with the Soul Light Bishop and the Knight Order following behind.
Among them, the most eye-catching were the two accompanying coaches, each drawn by four horses. Each horse was a unique breed, extraordinarily tall, with their backs nearly two meters from the ground.
Only such massive horses could pull the coaches while also towing five stone coffins each.
The Royal Tomb was responsible for burying the deceased of the entire Mikel Kingdom. Anyone with a slightly affluent background would find a way before death to be buried in the Royal Tomb.
Furthermore, cremation was not popular in the Mikel Kingdom, and the space-consuming inhumation was common. Despite its large area, the Royal Tomb became crowded over the years with accumulated burials.
Aside from the specially reserved paths, where there were no roads, the dense tombstones left no room for coaches to pass through.
But in front of horses with legs nearly two meters long, these obstacles posed no problem. The two coaches followed Wu Chang and Han'er, passing directly through the graveyard, the coach bodies and the stone coffins behind them crushing everything in their path.
The coaches left behind a trail of shattered tombstone fragments.
Wu Chang furrowed his brow, unable to stop himself from speaking up for his employer. "Bishop, the coaches aren't suited to pass through here. We could take another route; destroying the graves of the deceased seems inappropriate."
The bishop's expression turned somewhat unpleasant as he said, "Sean, the Gravekeeper, I don't want to repeat myself; don't concern yourself with what we're doing, just do your job."
Wu Chang sighed, "Alright, as you wish."
Shortly after entering the graveyard, perhaps as a prelude to a storm, the full moon above slowly turned into a crescent.
As the full moon waned, a thick fog rose in the graveyard, obscuring everyone's sight.
Wu Chang lit the Gravekeeper's Oil Lamp, which dispelled the fog immediately. He approached Han'er, surrounding the two with the light. He intended to ask the Soul Light Bishop if they needed to regroup to stay within the lamp's range.
But when he turned around, he found the Archbishop, the nine knights, including the two coachmen, had all lit their own Gravekeeper's Oil Lamps.
The light from the oil lamps formed a continuous barrier, preventing the fog from approaching the caravan.
The Gravekeeper's Oil Lamps weren't something casually produced; they were elegant antiques designed in the era of Mikhail I by scholars to accompany the Blood Moon Eternal Life.
Each Gravekeeper's Oil Lamp was a centuries-old heirloom, each a precious item with only five spare oil lamps left in the royal inventory, of which only one was said to remain due to accidental damage over the years.
Judging by the fog-dispersing effect, the oil lamps used by the Soul Light Bishop and his group were definitely the real deal. Where did they get their hands on such lamps?
As everyone knows, Gravekeeper's Oil Lamps can be lit only under two circumstances.
