Seeing Ran and Sonoko playing so well together, Yū felt that their deep friendship later on wasn't accidental. This was a friendship spanning over ten years, starting from kindergarten, something that no one or anything could easily break. So, in future events, they would be able to unhesitatingly entrust their backs to each other.
"Alright, it's nap time now." The teacher came to tell everyone to sleep.
Although Yū believed that with his mental age, he didn't need a nap like a child, perhaps due to the influence of his surroundings, coupled with the fact that he was now a genuine child, Yū actually fell asleep naturally. So Yū unfortunately missed Shinichi and Ran's first encounter. He really wondered how much of a psychological shadow it would cast on Yū when he learned this news.
When all the other children were asleep, Ran was not.
"Uh, I remember... first fold it in half, then fold this corner like this," Ran mumbled as she folded the paper to make the sakura name tag, recalling how Mouri Eri had helped her make it that morning.
"Keep going, just a little more, Ran, you can do it," although Ran told herself not to cry, her tears wouldn't stop falling. "Draw a line here, then cut along it. Done!" Looking at the new sakura name tag in her hand, Ran smiled happily.
At this moment, Kudo Shinichi, who appeared from nowhere, suddenly spoke up, "Make one for me too. Is that a sakura?" Seeing Ran's puzzled expression, Kudo Shinichi asked again, "Isn't it?"
"Y-yes, yes, but how do you know it's a sakura?" Ran was a little confused.
"Why are you asking? Do you think I'm stupid?" Kudo Shinichi said with a smug expression. "The name tags pinned on the clothes in your row are all sakura, right? The name tags in the row below you are all tulips!"
"But, but, how do you know I'm making a sakura name tag just from that?" Ran still didn't understand.
"Because only your clothes don't have a name tag," Kudo Shinichi continued to explain with a somewhat helpless yet secretly delighted expression. "And this folding method, it's about folding a square piece of origami into 10 equally sized small squares, and you cut it into this shape. If you unfold it, it must be a sakura."
Saying this, Kudo Shinichi unfolded the paper, and a paper sakura appeared before them. "So I understand! You lost your sakura name tag, and while whimpering, you were making a new one," he glanced at the tear marks on Ran's face. Kudo Shinichi put his hands in his pockets and said coolly, "You really are a crybaby!"
"Wow!" Suddenly everyone woke up, looking at Kudo Shinichi with expressions that said, "You're so amazing."
"You're so cool! You're like a psychic!" Sonoko said with great admiration.
"Idiot, I'm not a psychic..." Kudo Shinichi was a bit exasperated with Sonoko.
"I'm not a crybaby either!" Ran retorted.
"Aren't you crying?" Kudo Shinichi stated it as a fact. "I'm not lying."
"I'm not crying!!!" Ran said even louder.
"You are crying."
"I'm not crying!"
So the two started arguing.
"Hey, hey, so this kid was such a show-off even in kindergarten!" Yū thought to himself, seeing Ran and Shinichi arguing. "No wonder their relationship is so good later. It turns out they've been together since kindergarten." Kudo Shinichi and Ran, this future little couple, completely blinded Yū's titanium dog eyes. After all, Yū had been a perpetual bachelor before transmigration.
"Ah, Shin-chan, so you were here!" Kudo Yukiko said, displeased. "Honestly! Don't just disappear when we're doing the enrollment procedures!"
"M-Mama!" Kudo Shinichi was startled. He didn't expect to be found after running off.
"Hey, hey, what happened to your name tag? You were wearing it until just now!" Kudo Yukiko suddenly noticed that the sakura name tag Kudo Shinichi was wearing was gone and couldn't help but ask.
"I don't know where I lost it?" Kudo Shinichi said evasively. Actually, the sakura name tag was in his pocket, but he didn't want to take it out for some reason.
"No way? I even specifically ran to the autograph session to get it back!" Kudo Yukiko couldn't believe she had made a wasted trip.
"That's why I wanted this girl to help me make a sakura name tag!" Kudo Shinichi said, indicating he had already thought of a plan.
"Oh, you?" Kudo Yukiko looked at Ran. "Could it be Eri's Ran-chan?"
"Mhm, mhm." Ran nodded.
"So you and our Shin-chan are in the same kindergarten!" Yukiko immediately became excited. "You two, three, get along well!" Hmm, when Yukiko said this, she noticed Yū standing nearby.
"The new name tags will be ready next week..." At this moment, Kindergarten Teacher Emi spoke.
"Oh, is that so?" Kudo Yukiko replied.
"If you want a sakura name tag, then I'll give you this one I just made. I'll write your name on it. What's your name?" Ran asked.
"Ku... Kudo Shinichi, from the Sakura Class," Shinichi said.
"Kudo... Shinichi... Done! It's done!" Ran handed the sakura name tag with Shinichi's name on it to Shinichi and said, "I'm giving you this, so you have to promise me, Shinichi-kun, I'm not a crybaby! Don't call me a crybaby anymore!!!"
"Oh, hm." Shinichi was a little confused.
Yū, who had watched the entire process from the side, felt like going home and eating a bag of dog food to calm himself down, to comfort his single dog heart that had suffered 10,000+ damage. However, the paper sakura name tag was a good tool to bring Yū closer to Ran and Shinichi. So Yū suddenly spoke up, "I accidentally lost my sakura name tag too, Ran. Can you make one for me too?"
"No problem, but I didn't expect Yū-kun to have such a clumsy side either," Ran teased Yū.
"Even horses stumble sometimes, ah hahahahaha!" Yū argued.
Kudo Shinichi looked at Yū, his lips curling slightly upwards. "He's a good guy." Yū's action of hiding the sakura name tag in his pocket didn't escape Kudo Shinichi's notice; he saw it.
Looking at Ran and Yū, Kudo Shinichi began to find this kindergarten interesting. He looked forward to the days to come.
"You two," Yukiko seemed to understand something too. "Then I'll be leaving now!"
"Goodbye, Onee-san!" This was the cunning Yū.
"Goodbye, Auntie!" The honest Ran.
"Hmph..." The arrogant Kudo Shinichi.
"Since you're all awake, let's go play games!" Teacher Emi said.
"Yay!" Everyone cheered.
Thus, Yū, Ran, Shinichi, and Sonoko, who would become lifelong friends and share life-and-death experiences, gradually began to grow closer at this moment.
