Chapter 20: chapter 20: The Edge of Desperation
The air was thick with smoke, the sound of crackling flames and the cackling of firebenders closing in. Every step Tomo and Ariya took felt like it brought them closer to the inevitable, the earth beneath them now nothing more than a path to nowhere.
Behind them, the firebenders were relentless, their cruel laughter filling the air as they pursued their prey like hunters closing in on a wounded animal.
Tomo's heart pounded in his chest, the adrenaline surging through his veins, but it wasn't enough to quiet the gnawing dread that took root in his gut. He could hear the firebenders' steps, the hiss of flames growing nearer with every passing moment.
Tomo's breath came in ragged gasps as he pushed forward, his mind scrambling for a way out. He had no weapon. No plan. His fists clenched at his sides, but his body was weighed down by fatigue, his limbs aching with every movement.
Ariya was just ahead of him, her breath equally labored, her movements a blur of panic as she glanced over her shoulder, her eyes wide with terror. "Tomo... we can't outrun them. We—"
The ground beneath them narrowed.
Tomo's eyes shot to the path ahead—what had once been a dense thicket of trees now gave way to a sheer drop.
A cliff.
His heart sank. The world seemed to tilt, and for a moment, all he could hear was the sound of his own heartbeat drumming in his ears.
There was no escape now. They were cornered. The firebenders were too close—he could feel the heat radiating off their flames, licking the air like a predator's tongue. They weren't just chasing them anymore. They were enjoying the hunt.
"Nowhere to run, little mice," overseer kael jeered, his voice dripping with sadistic delight.
Tomo's gaze flickered to the edge of the cliff, the darkness below a cold promise. His mind raced, adrenaline and fear pushing him to the brink of madness. He wasn't going to make it. He knew that.
Ariya's hand gripped his arm, her touch tight with desperation. "Tomo, we can't... we can't just..."
Her words trailed off as the firebenders moved closer, the ground beneath them shaking with the force of their advancing steps.
A massive fireball suddenly flew in their direction, bursting with a blinding light that sent a wave of heat rushing toward them. Tomo instinctively shoved Ariya aside, pulling her out of the fire's reach, but they couldn't keep dodging. They couldn't keep running.
It was hopeless.
Tomo's chest constricted, and he felt a familiar flicker in the pit of his stomach. The deep, quiet voice that had always been there— the one that had told him he wasn't good enough, that he would fail...
But this time, the voice was quieter. Smaller.
A gust of wind whipped around them, ruffling Tomo's hair, and for just a moment, his body stilled.
Then, with no more time to waste, he raised his arms.
"Stay back!" he shouted to Ariya, his voice rough, but there was something desperate in it. Something raw.
The wind around them surged. At first, nothing happened. For a heartbeat, there was nothing but the sharp crackle of fire and the distant roar of the flames. But then, as if the very air had recognized his command, a powerful gust of wind erupted from Tomo's hands.
It wasn't just a breeze—it was a wall of air, a force so strong that the firebenders were thrown back, stumbling as the wind battered their bodies. Tomo's eyes widened, his own surprise matching the shock on their faces.
What…?
Ariya gasped, stepping back in astonishment, her eyes locked onto Tomo with a mixture of disbelief and awe. She opened her mouth, but no words came.
For the firebenders, it was a moment of pure shock. Their faces twisted in confusion as the wind gusts sent them scrambling for balance, unable to control the flames they wielded.
Tomo's chest heaved with exertion, the wind still swirling in his wake. He could feel the exhaustion creeping in, his strength beginning to fade, but the firebenders had lost their momentum—if only for a moment.
But that moment was enough.
"Tomo… are you…" Ariya's voice trembled, and she finally spoke, her voice filled with disbelief. "You're... an airbender?"
Tomo's gaze locked onto hers, his heart racing.
He wanted to speak. To explain. But there was no time.
He wasn't a firebender, wasn't a warrior—hell, he wasn't even sure what he was. But in that moment, with the firebenders momentarily stunned, Tomo knew he had to do something.
He had to protect her. He had to protect them both.
The firebenders were recovering too quickly. Their flames surged forward again, more intense than before.
"Get the boy alive, kill the girl" Kael ordered.
A bunch of the soldiers gathered their flames, a fireball bigger than any Tomo had seen before, gathering together with malicious glee.
Tomo stepped back, instinctively pulling Ariya with him, but there was nowhere to go. The cliff loomed behind them, the abyss threatening to swallow them whole.
Ariya's voice trembled with panic. "Tomo... we can't… We can't jump. It's too far! We'll die!"
Her words cut through him like a knife. He knew she was right. But in the same breath, he also knew there was no other choice. The firebenders were closing in. The cliff was their only option now.
A glance back at the firebenders—then to Ariya's wide eyes, full of fear and uncertainty. He could see it—the doubt in her gaze, the fear of what they were about to do.
But he had already made the decision.
"Trust me," he said, his voice shaking with a resolve he barely felt. "Trust me."
And without waiting for a response, Tomo grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the edge.
