Chapter 109: 109: Protecting the spirits.

"I never expected Zhao to actually give me the location of this place. I knew it existed, but those guys have monopolized it," said the woman, who was surprisingly dressed in the Northern Water Tribe's traditional clothing.
Her words were filled with hatred for the group of men who had prevented the tribe's female waterbenders from learning anything other than healing for centuries.
Seeking to bring about change, she joined the Red Lotus. But now that Yue had risen to power and announced his stance, she was supposed to put those emotions aside, right? But hatred doesn't work that way. It's more like a fire that consumes everything and a cancer that spreads to every aspect of your life.
She had been consumed by the hatred in her heart. She insisted that Shisui was a traitor, that the Fire Nation had not changed, and that he did not deserve the "redemption" many had given him.
She ignored the fact that Shisui had no reason to support a people to which he did not belong and that the Fire Nation had not tried to hide the damage it had done. In fact, the Fire Nation was doing its best to heal the indelible marks it had left.
The Fire Nation itself was aware that its mistakes were too numerous and terrible. Even the population, which had strongly supported its nation's interventionism and invasions in the past, grew tired of it over time.
The war weighed heavily on all sides, hurting those who had little to do with it. Fortunately, the desire for war that had taken root in the older generations did not pass too strongly to the younger ones. Over time, the new generation was fierce yet more peaceful.
But she couldn't let anything go! Was her suffering less than that of others? No! At that moment, all she could think about was making those who had given her a hard time suffer.
Was this justifiable? For her, yes. She did not care about the consequences of what she was about to do, even though it would profoundly affect her own power. She was determined to fulfill the ideals of the Red Lotus and satisfy the recalcitrant hatred that had brewed inside her for so many years.
She walked decisively to the only place in Agna Qel'a with a rich natural environment. Now, there were more flowers throughout the city, so this place was no longer unique.
The rich spiritual atmosphere enveloped her, causing strange visions to appear as she drew closer to the pond where the spirits of the Ocean and the Moon rested. It was as if the Spiritual World itself were giving her a revelation.
Tui and La sensed this woman's malicious intentions, so they used the surrounding environment to distract her by projecting meaningless things.
This was Shisui's idea because the two water spirits were unable to act more directly, so if anyone got too close to this place, it would be a major problem. They had to use this strategy to buy time.
Time for what? For someone who had decided that, while in Agna Qel'a, he would offer them his most dedicated protection. While Akinitsivuk tried to free herself from the strange images, a figure fell from the sky.
"Damn it, a rat got in too deep," said Shisui, who arrived and looked at the woman with his golden eyes before turning to look at the two spirits. He leaned his spear on the ground and used it for support.
"Yes, I know. No, we're all fine, thank you. Huh? A small enemy fleet is coming? How daring!" Shisui communicated with Tui and La without entering a deep meditative state, though to an outsider like Akinitsivuk, who had freed himself from spiritual deception, it appeared as if he were talking to thin air.
"Are you crazy? Only a madman would side with those bastards from the Fire Nation," Akinitsivuk growled. Shisui froze and turned to look at her, raising an eyebrow.
"There are better insults than those." Instead of getting angry, as one might have expected, the Sage simply smiled amusedly. However, there was a deep coldness in his eyes because he had activated his gift and noticed something curious about this woman.
She was neither possessed nor enhanced, nor did she have traces of dark energy. She was as common as other enemies he had encountered throughout his life. However, there was something that made her stand out. No matter what emotion she felt, her aura was tinged with hatred.
It was the first time Shisui had seen anything like it. The tangle of changing colors that constantly twisted to represent human emotions had traces of the color representing hatred.
Consequently, her entire aura was filled with a strong negative atmosphere. This could be considered a special talent because it undoubtedly affects someone's spirit, driving them crazy. However, this woman seemed quite lucid.
"Did you come to stop me? None of my companions could do anything against you, but don't underestimate me." Akinitsivuk took a classic waterbending stance, something she had learned since joining the Red Lotus.
"I didn't come to stop you. You don't even deserve to be stopped. I just came to eliminate a small problem and then move on to something more important." Shisui was no longer willing to play along because something more serious was approaching Agna Qel'a. Fortunately, he had Tui and La on his side. They informed him that a small fleet with evil intentions was approaching the North Pole.
He decided that he would not engage in an intense battle with this woman this time, but rather, eliminate her with ease. Shisui's muscles tensed, and the chi within him roared as he overcame the physical limitations preventing him from using his full strength.
With a swift kick, he lunged toward Akinitsivuk, spear in hand, pointing directly at her neck. To his enemy, he had become a barely discernible blur.
Before she could react, her body was pushed backward as intense pain invaded her brain for a moment before giving way to uncomfortable numbness.
Her body floated several inches in the air as blood ran down her skin and slowly dripped onto the ground, staining the green grass with a deep crimson. Unintelligible gurgles came from her mouth, and her eyes were red as she stared at Shisui.
Shisui's attack was devastating yet precise. It pierced Akinitsivuk's throat, affecting her spine, nerves, and blood vessels, which is why she didn't feel much pain.
"I don't know what fueled so much hatred in you, but I hope you are reincarnated and find peace." Shisui withdrew his spear and shook it gently to remove the drops of blood from the tip of his weapon.
Akinitsivuk's body fell to the ground like a puppet with its strings cut. The noises she was making and all signs of life quickly diminished until only silence remained.
Shisui watched the whole process, not because he was perverted or morbid, but because the moment this woman died, he felt a coldness that made him raise his guard.
It was different from the cold wind of the North Pole. This time, the sensation he felt was strange and very close to the spiritual realm. Recognizing that he was facing an interesting phenomenon, he focused his full attention on the corpse and noticed the cause of it all.
So much concentrated hatred! So much resentment at the moment of death. Such immense reluctance for unfulfilled purposes! All of this adds to the spiritually charged atmosphere of this area and gives birth to what we might consider a ghost.
"How do you plan to reincarnate when you become something like this?" Shisui sighed as he drew water from the Spiritual Pond. The water swirled around the fledgling specter, which tried to float toward Shisui with evil intentions. However, a strong golden glow held it back.
Without hesitation, the Sage made the best decision he could to purify this being and allow the woman to enter the cycle of reincarnation. He could study this phenomenon, but he felt it was unnecessary to prolong obvious suffering.
'In the end, I'm a sentimental person, aren't I? I can't stand to see others suffer unnecessarily,' Shisui said, smiling self-critically as he shook his head.
He had no doubts about his actions or the path he had chosen. However, even he realized that he was soft on the inside. Instead of changing, he simply accepted it. Isn't it the nature of water to be soft yet harden at key moments?
Thus, through his purification efforts, the ghost of Akinitsivuk could no longer cause trouble in the world of the living and was finally able to transcend. Although he had not researched these types of creatures, the process of purifying them revealed small details about the cycle of life and death, as well as other spiritual aspects, such as how the world was governed.
"It seems that souls and spirits are mixed but also separate. I always thought it was strange that avatars were beings independent of the spiritual world but had the same soul.
Can the soul engender multiple spirits? Is it like how a clone could develop a different personality from yours, even though it is genetically the same?
That would explain a lot. One soul, multiple spirits; each life, a new spirit. The soul does not change; it has no age. It simply exists and transcends everything. What I just purified is not his soul, is it? It was his spirit. If so...
No wonder the soul is immutable, but the spirit is not. All souls are eternal, but the spirit changes. Those are your past lives, which form a new you. That is why the Avatar can have so many forms with only one soul.
This explains the images I saw when I reached enlightenment. Through my current spirit, I could see traces of my past spirits in my soul, stretching back to the beginning of the universe.
Did all souls exist before the creation of the universe? Or, at least, what makes up souls? That's a topic for further research. For now, this confirms that what matters most is the spirit because each one is independent of the previous one.
That's why I can't trust anything to do with resurrection. Luckily, I haven't encountered any such elements, but if I do, I will destroy them.
If I can manipulate my spirit, that's what chi is for. However, it's a very indirect use. There are still many things we don't know about this energy, so we need to explore it further.
Couldn't I do those amazing things if I manipulated my spirit directly? Isn't energy bending a direct connection between spirits? Yes, that's it! Hahahaha!
Chi is the bridge between the soul, body, and spirit. Let me try that! Hahahaha!" What started as low murmurs turned into a loud laugh that caused ripples in the pond where Tui and La were swimming and dancing.
As the sage laughed, a large amount of chi emerged from his body in the form of specks of light. However, their density was too high. After all, it was his first time doing this, and wasting so much energy would be foolish under different circumstances.
The use of such power caused a slight tremor, the momentum of which spread throughout the city and caused everyone to turn and look in his direction. Yue was the first to react, realizing that Shisui had taken a crucial step.
"It seems my nephew really can't sit still," Yue said, smiling.
"Hmm? Shisui feels a little more...alive?" How strange. I have to go see," Azula muttered, noticing the change in Shisui. Flames burst from her foot and headed toward her fiancé.
Many people were curious and headed in his direction. The conflict in Agna Qel'a was already over, but news of an invading fleet had spread, so people needed to be aware of changes in the city to avoid being caught off guard.
However, before anyone could approach, they had to stop in their tracks and look up. A gigantic humanoid figure made of blue energy stood before them.
The amount of chi concentrated in this being was so great that many people felt uncomfortable just looking at it. It held a spear in its hand, and the blue hue of the spear was much deeper than the rest. Most remarkably, you could hear the unrestrained laughter of a certain Sage.
"It was always within my reach! HAHAHAHAHAHA! Damn, this takes a lot of energy..." complained Shisui, inside the head of the energy construct he had materialized.
He didn't have as much chi as the avatar, but due to his enlightenment, he seemed to be under a constant buff. This made him stronger than the average waterbender. For this reason alone, he had enough power to achieve this feat.
Even though he was getting tired quickly, the smile on his face simply wouldn't disappear. He had been trying to train in this area for a long time, but only now did he understand the key to this ability. Many things had also become clearer to him.
He felt he could master energy bending on his own, though it would take much longer because it involves interacting directly with another person's spirit. For now, he had barely set foot in the realm of mastering his own spirit.
However... Now, he had his own giant, energetic body!

AN: Akinitsivuk means Echo.
SUSANOO!
I have always wanted to resolve this issue: Why are there so many Avatars in the spiritual world acting independently, while the soul of the Avatar always reincarnates? Then, this answer came to me.
It's not based on any religion or philosophy, as far as I know, but it works for me as an answer. They say that the soul is eternal, immutable, unchanging, so I exaggerated that concept to make all souls, or the matter that makes them up, unchanged since the beginning of the universe, while what changes is the spirit, what we call "life," so to speak.
Of course, this only works here, but I may take this concept for my other stories, even the original ones, or I may not, if it fits (in fact, the concept of the soul in my two original novels is somewhat different, but I can take a little from the concept presented here; it doesn't change things too much, and it would only add depth to the subject). After all, the subject of reincarnation, souls, and so on, are topics dealt with in many ways in fictional works.
The thing is, this explains the Avatars. A formless soul, generating different spirits over 10,000 years, and because of the special nature of the Avatars, instead of simply remaining in the same soul, reincarnating, they 'separate' to act independently in the spirit world.
It also explains what Iroh did in Korra: he says that the Spirit World is not the world of the dead, so he couldn't find Lu Ten, his son, so he decided to simply 'ascend' to the Spirit World.
For me, it's as if he separated himself from his soul, allowing it to reincarnate, while that spirit remained in the spirit world. Probably, that soul, if it obtains some special ability in a future life, will come into contact with Iroh, just like the Avatars.
This does not contradict the principle of reincarnation in this novel: each reincarnation is a new life, in essence, a new spirit. If Shisui dies, his soul would reincarnate and generate a new spirit, while the one we currently know would be a spiritual being, with a certain relationship, but essentially different beings.
This avoids that strange and bizarre situation in which an old consciousness is in a young body, as has been emphasized many times throughout the existence of this fanfic. This isn't Mushoku Tensei or however that stupid work is spelled.
Anyway, that's it, we've resolved this Avatar issue, but I mean, this is FANON, devised by me, it may not even be like that, lol xD.
