Chapter 106: 106: Azula became the Night.
An explosion between Azula and Hama caused Yue to rush toward them, trying to figure out what had happened. She was also concerned about her daughter-in-law's well-being. After all, she was responsible for Shisui's mother in matters such as these.
"You...you're crazy," Hama muttered, looking at the princess in front of her with fear and murderous intent. Her latest action had really taken her by surprise, and the meaning behind it increased her desire to finish her off.
Azula caused an explosion! From what Hama could gather, it wasn't something her enemy had done deliberately but rather a complete coincidence. She had noticed long ago that her enemy was using her to develop her strange flames.
This kind of behavior, in which one ignores one's own well-being and the situation to achieve something, was familiar to Hama because she had done it herself. For this reason, the apprehension in her eyes, clouded by spiritual energy, grew stronger.
"Hmm? It got out of hand! Hahaha!" Azula laughed as she looked at her blistered palms, the result of the explosion that had occurred a moment ago.
Then, a bubble of water covered her hands, and with a brief blue flash, their skin recovered, returning to its pristine state. Yue had done this, finally standing by her side again and looking at her reproachfully.
"This is a serious fight. You can't try out potentially dangerous new things in a situation like this," Yue admonished before waving her hands and creating several ice spears that shot toward Hama.
The ice projectiles broke the sound barrier, causing explosions and leaving halos of water vapor. Yue quickly brought these under her control and modified them into rings of ice that flew at high speed toward their enemy.
"I know, but that allowed me to discover something interesting," Azula said in response before throwing a punch forward and compressing her powerful blue flames into a jet of fire. The jet flew toward Hama, who had created an ice sphere to protect herself from Yue's previous attacks.
The fire collided with the ice and turned into a prolonged battle of attrition. Azula continued to produce blue flames, and Hama replenished and reinforced her icy protection.
During this time, will-o'-the-wisps filled Azula's eyes. This special fire, seemingly harmless and easy to shape, revealed a new facet to its creator, opening Azula's 'eyes' to a different world.
It was not the extraordinary ability shared by Ty Lee and Shisui, who could see people's auras. Rather, it was something different, perhaps barely explored: souls.
Spectral figures writhed around Hama before the princess's eyes, performing actions that represented their suffering. They cried without voices, bit each other, and tried to tear off parts of their bodies. Due to their nature, they could not interact with the world or their own kind.
Strange red tendrils embedded in their bodies were all connected to Hama's figure. Through this unhealthy connection, a flow of energy reached her body, maintaining her vitality.
However, this change was only aesthetic. Beneath her glamorous skin was the soul of an old woman. In principle, this would not be a bad thing, but Hama's soul was special in its current state.
Azula saw decay and corruption from Vaatu permeating her essence. What would have been an ordinary old woman had become the spitting image of the 'zombies' that Shisui once described.
It was utterly horrific. If you added the parts that had been transformed into a crow, its skin covered in black feathers, a beak formed from pieces of rotten flesh, and enormous claws that constantly flailed about as if trying to catch more souls for its collection, you would have an excellent description of its true state.
I always thought Shisui was exaggerating when he told me that one of the things he hated most was people who got involved with souls and many types of strange enemies. He even told me that he was afraid of my exploration of the divinatory arts with fire.
I just took it as his active mind devising scenarios in which he might encounter complicated enemies. Seriously, was there really a being capable of stopping time for nine seconds? Or a woman who could say 'No more benders' and alter reality with those words?
Nonsense! Being afraid of beings born of paranoia was an exaggeration on Shisui's part. Hating them was unnecessary because you would never encounter such beings.
That is, until I saw you. Until my fire allowed me to see you for who you are and the damage you have caused. Now, I, too, feel great hatred toward you, you crazy bitch!" Azula shouted because, at that moment, Shisui finally hated those who manipulated souls.
As a Firebender wielding will-o'-the-wisp fire, this was completely unacceptable! She strengthened the jet of fire she was throwing at Hama, deciding to fly directly toward her while adding something else to her blue flames.
"It seems you saw something extraordinary, Azula. Let me give you some help." Yue's expression turned serious, and this time, she unleashed her full power, temporarily blocking Hama's waterbending to her surprise.
This was one of her most powerful abilities! As the embodiment of the spirit of the moon, Yue's influence extended beyond water to the core of waterbending itself. This allowed her to temporarily affect waterbenders, restricting something important and intrinsic to them.
She had never demonstrated this ability publicly due to the potential repercussions. She wanted to rule based on respect, not fear. She knew that she would inspire fear if she abused this ability in a place where countless Waterbenders lived.
Azula took advantage of Hama's fallen defenses, engulfing her in fire. A savage smile appeared on Azula's face as she imitated the nonsense of her fiancé and older brother.
"Blue exorcist!" the princess shouted, punching with her remaining hand and throwing will-o'-the-wisp fire at Hama. The clash of the two different flames, which mixed under Azula's influence, was magnificent.
Instead of an explosion like last time, the two types of fire merged, forming a visible image of yin and yang made of flames of different shades of blue.
This symbol burned silently and soon began to glow golden under Azula's control, not like Zuko's flames but with the purpose of purification.
Azula's actions were not entirely warlike; only partly so. The purpose of this attack was to free the souls that Hama had trapped and driven mad.
Because the princess refused to recognize her enemy as human, she began cawing like a crow again. The pain she felt paled in comparison to the years of torture she endured, but she was bothered by the fact that they were "taking away" her youth again.
She could feel her skin growing loose and wrinkled, her back curving, and experiencing other discomforts of old age that had disgusted her deeply before.
A great deal of dark spiritual energy emanated from her body. However, the crow spirit that had fused with her refused to leave so easily. It deepened its connection with Hama, initiating a new round of transformation that seemed to indicate her complete loss of identity as a human being.
However, the princess was not concerned about this. Rather, she was pleased that the souls previously trapped by her enemy were regaining their sanity as they were purified and freed from the old Waterbender's control.
Soon, Azula's flames died down. She breathed heavily from the expenditure of chi caused by her actions. However, the smile on her face was now one of joy.
"Go and be reincarnated in peace," she said with a strange emotion in her heart. Those poor victims of Hama, now free, nodded in agreement but did not speak.
"There may only be one Shisui between heaven and earth, but only one Zuko is lighting up the day, so let me be the night," Azula murmured. She looked at Hama, who had transformed into a grotesque humanoid crow with no trace of her former self. She was covered in the dark power of Vaatu.
"Azula, it's my turn. I've barely done anything, and you're already having so much fun, aren't you?" Yue commented as she floated next to her daughter-in-law. The princess shook her head and burst out laughing.
"Yue! I must sever the karmic bond between her and me. Damn it! Shisui gave me his stupid phrases," Azula complained before clapping her hands loudly. She used every trace of chi in her body for what she was about to do.
Hama... Was that Hama? The dark figure screamed as it flew toward the Firebender. She may have lost consciousness, but her hatred for the Fire Nation remained as strong as ever.
"Okay, I'm with you," Yue replied casually. She created a giant ice hand that caught the creature, trying to interrupt her beloved daughter-in-law. In the eyes of the new leader of the Northern Water Tribe, there was a hint of interest. She wanted to see what could require such a high display of energy.
"It seems that Shisui has told me many things over the years, and I think I understand why. He told me that lightning is more than the 'cold fire' everyone thought it was. It's a force of nature and an excellent enemy for dark entities.
Right now, you're not even human, so try this... Night Sky Net!" Along with her cry and unrestrained laughter, an overwhelming amount of electricity surged from her body and spread throughout the airspace of Agna Qel'a.
However, these electric arcs did not move randomly. Under Azula's guidance, they clustered around Hama, forming a cage that looked like a large hawk's eye observing the world from a distance.
"This is..." murmured Shisui, whose figure rose into the air on a square of ice.
He had decided to approach due to Azula's wide deployment. It was a good thing he did because he was able to catch his fiancée's body. It had begun to descend slowly due to the diminished power of the fire at her feet.
In Shisui's embrace, with her head on his broad chest and his powerful heartbeat in her ears, Azula could only say, "Hey."
"YOU!" Despite her suffering, Hama recognized Shisui. But right now, that cry seemed to be the last shred of energy she had left because the violent electrical currents tore her body apart and reduced it to ashes.
"Me," Shisui replied with a playful smile. However, his expression hardened when he sensed an imminent threat approaching him at great speed.
"How dare you think you can act in front of me!" Yue said, pointing forward. A wave of coldness rippled through the air, causing it to crackle. At that moment, a strange idea came to Shisui's mind.
"Can a waterbender freeze space?" the sage thought as he watched his aunt's actions. Everything affected by the cold seemed to simply stop, as if moving in space were forbidden.
Yue then waved her hand and summoned a crow-shaped spirit bathed in Vaatu's power that had suffered little damage from spending all this time inside Hama.
"It seems you got there first this time, Shisui," a male voice said from the spirit. Instinctively, Shisui knew who was speaking to him. Only he could act, even though his medium was frozen in a block of ice.
"Because your tricks seem to have remained unchanged in these 10,000 years, Vaatu," the Sage replied, causing the raven to laugh.
"Good! You really seem like an old friend of mine, even though we met in this life of yours. It doesn't matter. Humans don't need me to cause chaos. You know that well, Sage," Vaatu said confidently, before doing something that surprised Shisui.
"Here, I'll release this little one. He doesn't deserve to be eliminated by your temperamental aunt. Shisui, I am the embodiment of chaos. But am I really evil?" After asking this question, Vaatu's power left the crow's body. Yue decided to release it after confirming that there was no trace of darkness in it.
The little bird cawed when it saw Shisui and flew around him. With a flap of its wings, drops of water gathered around Shisui. Then, he became invisible for a few seconds before reappearing on the Waterbender's shoulder.
"First, an orange cat that does earthbending, and now a crow that does waterbending. What's next, a snake that does Firebending?" Shisui muttered before quickly choosing a name for the crow.
Since he knew Itachi and Shisui, it was only natural to name this crow Madara, right? Surely he would appreciate the irony of a waterbending crow being named after him rather than after a certain white-haired man obsessed with a particular clan.
