Chapter 13: The Shattered Allegiance (Part 2)
The Hidden Deception
The camp of the Solarian Dominion took Liam and Clara deep into the woods, far removed from the battlefront. Soldiers moved quickly, sharpening their weapons and fortifying defenses, when a knight among them stepped forward and presented himself as Sir Alaric, captain in the Solarian army.
They were briefed on the war for the next couple of hours. The Drakon Empire was represented as a bloodthirsty monster, burring villages and enslaving innocent lives. And the Solarians painted themselves as noble defenders of peace.
But as the sun dipped behind the mountains and the camp seemed to hold its breath, Liam began to notice so many strange details: soldiers whispering dissent among themselves, supplies hoarded by enough officers while all others went hungry, and then he overheard a talk late at night that made his heart skip a beat.
"Those Drakon prisoners?" asked one. "They're still around, right?"
"For now," the other replied. "But we're going to take them out before the last push. Can't have them spreading any lies about truth."
The heart of Liam raced. The truth? What were they hiding?
Just as he was trying to process it, Clara came to him, saying, "Something's wrong," with a dark expression on her face. "I-I found some papers in one of the tents. The Solarians have been attacking neutral villages and blaming it on the Drakon Empire."
Liam's gut twisted. The Solarian Dominion was a fake noble force. They had probably manipulated him-and the war- for personal gain.
"We chose the wrong side," he muttered.
The Battle Begins
The next morning, the war was unleashed in full swing with Liam and Clara being thrown on the battlefield where their weapons would clash against the forces of Drakon. The surrounding scenario was sheer chaos, but the realization of the lies of the Solarian Dominion was unable to escape Liam's mind.
Liam came to terms with Drakon- where the opposing girl soldier was just about his age and looked more afraid than mad. She seemed to hesitate; the sword was shaking in her grip.
"Please," she pleaded. "We are not the monsters they told you we are." "Barely audible" knew given the gallop of the vast armies in the background.
He lowered his blade, mind racing. All this time, Solarians had been lying. But could he trust the Drakon Empire? Seems like he wouldn't have to think long about it.
But a Solarian officer appeared, yelling, "Kill her, Liam! She's the enemy!"
Liam froze. This was the moment of truth.
