Chapter 82: Chapter 82: My Assessment
Up in the sky, with the silver moon hanging high behind him, Homelander stood, arms crossed, gazing down at Manhattan below. He had just witnessed Maeve's entire struggle to rescue Arnold.
"Now this...this is what I call a 3D blockbuster."
"No—"
"It's still not enough."
"One day, when I step into the DC or Marvel universe...watching from the sidelines will be even more exhilarating."
His gaze shifted subtly, a grin spreading across his face. "Ah, here we go."
Below.
On the island of Manhattan, Maeve landed with Arnold, the CEO of Olga Corporation, letting him down.
"You okay?" Maeve asked, glancing around at the battle suits rapidly descending from the building above.
But before Arnold could respond, she grabbed him and darted toward a waiting car nearby.
The black Range Rover was within reach—when suddenly, a dark figure plummeted from the sky like a meteor, crashing onto the vehicle. The car crumpled under the impact, glass shattering, fragments flying in every direction.
Maeve stopped in her tracks, kicking away a piece of shattered door as it hurtled toward Arnold. She watched as a figure leapt off the wreckage of the car, landing firmly on the ground.
"And where exactly did you plan on taking my prey, Your Majesty?" said a voice, the tone distorted into a chilling electronic resonance.
Maeve took in the armored figure clad in black, draped in a cape reminiscent of ancient royalty. The other armors now surrounded them in a wide circle, as if bowing to the authority of this ominous figure.
She narrowed her eyes slightly. "Z?"
Without waiting for a reply, she rushed forward, hands extended to shove the figure away.
But instead of dodging, Z's armor lit up with a faint glow, lifting him effortlessly off the ground. He reached out, catching her hands in his own, challenging her strength with an eerie calm.
Maeve grunted, pouring all her power into the struggle, but it was like pushing against a mountain.
Her expression changed.
The force from his armor was relentless, surging like a tidal wave.
Crack!
Beneath her feet, the pavement split into jagged fissures, stones buckling under the weight of the battle. In the next instant, the ground collapsed, leaving Maeve embedded in a crater several meters wide.
Z's laughter echoed from within the black armor. With a sudden push, he sent Maeve skidding backward across the street, her heels leaving twin trenches in the ground.
Finally stopping, Maeve let out a furious roar, charging him with renewed vigor.
Bang!
She headbutted Z squarely in the chest, expecting him to stagger—but instead, he retaliated with a headbutt of his own, snapping her head back. For a split second, her vision went dark.
Before she could recover, Z released her, launching a spinning kick that sent her crashing into the side of a white Lincoln. The car exploded, metal caving in, pinning Maeve within the wreckage.
Above them, Homelander watched with a smirk as Maeve's body was buried in the mangled car, struggling to get out.
Z landed, arms outstretched. "Well, how does it feel? Smart armor isn't exactly forgiving, is it?"
He sneered. "In front of this, what are superheroes?"
"This is the greatest invention of the century, a turning point like the invention of electricity. With this armor, your age—your so-called 'superhuman' era—is finished!" His voice rang out with triumph. "Strength, speed, reflexes, flight—"
"Everything you superheroes have, my suit has too!"
"And more than that, it has a learning capability, adaptive evolution."
"Did you think I, a regular person, could defeat you in hand-to-hand combat?"
"I might be a klutz in sports, but this suit's AI has analyzed your moves, adapted, and found ways to counter them."
"All I have to do is let it do its thing, and beating you is easy."
"Now, watch this."
Raising his arm, two red lights flared from Z's wrist-mounted weapons, unleashing beams of crimson light that drilled into Maeve's chest.
Maeve let out a pained scream as her skin seared under the onslaught, forcing her to shield herself with one hand while wrenching herself free from the car wreck with the other. She grabbed a piece of the car and hurled it toward Z.
Z raised his arm, slicing through the debris effortlessly with his beams, splitting it in two.
Through the falling pieces, Maeve surged forward, her fist aimed straight for his face.
But Z merely extended his hand, catching her punch with ease. His cape flared outward, sweeping toward her like a lethal whip.
Maeve ducked, narrowly evading as the edge of the cape grazed her hair, slicing through a few strands.
Yet Z was relentless. Before she could recover, he kneed her hard in the stomach. Maeve's face turned bright red as she coughed violently from the impact.
Z's laughter boomed as he grabbed Maeve by the face, slamming her into the ground. Raising his other fist, he prepared to strike.
But Maeve's leg shot up, wrapping around Z's torso. She twisted, using her whole body to throw him across the street and through the window of a nearby store, shattering the glass.
He quickly rebounded, crashing into Maeve, sending her sprawling again.
A compartment opened on his shoulder, deploying a small launcher. It fired a device that landed near Maeve's feet.
Instinctively, Maeve rolled to the side just as the object hit the ground, glowing ominously before the car next to it compressed inward, collapsing into a twisted sphere of metal.
Maeve's face tightened. If she hadn't moved in time, that would have been her.
Z closed in once more, engaging her in an intense brawl that tore up the street. It became clear that he had the upper hand.
Up above, Homelander took in the spectacle.
"No wonder this ex-employee of theirs dared to go up against the Feds," he mused, watching with interest. "This armor is leagues above the rest."
Despite his curiosity, Homelander wasn't exactly impressed. After all, in his eyes, Maeve was powerful but not unbeatable. She couldn't even stand up to a speeding truck without injury—a far cry from his own level.
In truth, in this universe, even the strongest superhumans didn't quite compare to Homelander. It's no wonder he remained the unrivaled powerhouse.
His communicator buzzed, breaking his thoughts. A familiar voice came through.
"Homelander, do you have a moment?"
It was Edgar.
"I have a matter I'd like to discuss with you."
[Author's Note: That scene where Maeve admits she was hurt by a truck? Yup, that's straight out of Season 1. If you're curious, check it out.]
