Chapter 238: The Monstrous Deer
20 minutes later.
The aftermath of the nuclear explosion had subsided, and on the outskirts of the Mountain City, buildings with destroyed structures were still collapsing.
The power outage plunged the entire city back into darkness.
Lin Yu, along with the Scout, returned to the surface. At this moment, besides the howling wind between the buildings and the thudding sounds of collapsing structures, what truly unnerved them were the ghastly howls of the monsters on the city's outskirts, lurking like malevolent ghosts.
"These monsters are out of control."
Lin Yu said in a deep voice:
"The nuclear blast's shockwave disrupted the Beacon's control over them... What did the Huaxia Army call it again?"
"Electromagnetic pulse?"
"Yes, electromagnetic pulse."
The Scout replied in a low voice.
"It's really effective... Now I completely understand why those from the Huaxia Army look down on us."
"It's not just because they can use nuclear bombs. Their kind of strikes... almost defy imagination."
"They have never been to Mountain City, yet in such a short time learned how to suppress this city."
"If they bomb like this every day, or even every few hours, they probably wouldn't need to attack directly. This city would be completely destroyed by them sooner or later, wouldn't it?"
"Not necessarily."
Lin Yu shook his head and said:
"The nuclear bombs can only take out the above-ground structures."
"Look, we survived by hiding under a building, let alone those core areas truly underground."
"Eventually, they have to think of other ways."
"But it doesn't matter, they must have plans."
At this point, Lin Yu pointed towards the distant park and said:
"But now we don't need to worry about that temporarily."
"There's no light over there now, let's quickly go and return, find some food!"
"Understood."
The Scout nodded immediately, and the two dashed out of the building, heading directly towards the park down the now-deserted streets.
Only when walking the streets did Lin Yu finally understand what those unmanned machines were doing.
They were indeed "repairing" the city.
However, they were only repairing those damaged devices related to "electricity" in the city.
"This city must run entirely on electricity."
"Without electricity, this city is dead."
As he ran forward, Lin Yu spoke:
"But where does the electricity come from? Is it also buried underground?"
"I don't know."
The Scout kept his eyes fixed ahead.
"I don't care where the electricity is, or whether the city is dead or not."
"But...."
"There's something up ahead!"
"It's full of living beings in there!"
"We won't die!"
The Scout's tone was filled with undisguised delight, and Lin Yu, following the direction he pointed, immediately noted several moving shadows in the densely vegetated park.
They truly were living creatures.
Lin Yu instantly quickened his pace, his long knife already drawn.
No complex attack methods were needed; at their speed, no animal could escape the blade.
The last remnants of energy burned up, and when Lin Yu felt his steps grow unsteady, he had already dashed into the forest.
----This clearly was not a true forest.
But rather a "man-made garden" enclosed with fences and wire!
But it didn't matter.
These fences couldn't stop him.
Lin Yu leaped up, and as he landed, a startled deer collided with his blade.
Cold steel flashed, and blood splattered.
Lin Yu surveyed his surroundings warily, then discovered that most of this garden was filled with tame, small animals.
"Is there any scent of monsters?"
Lin Yu asked the nearby Scout.
"No."
"No scent of monsters."
"But..."
"That strange smell is strong."
"Strange smell?"
Lin Yu furrowed his brows.
"The strange smell you mentioned before?"
"Yes."
The Scout touched the still-twitching deer's corpse underfoot, brought his fingers to his nose, and said:
"The smell in the blood is particularly strong... but it doesn't seem toxic."
"What do we do, eat or not?"
"Eat, I'm barely holding on, why wouldn't we?"
Lin Yu grabbed the severed deer head beside him and took a voracious gulp.
Blood rushed down his throat. After the intense salty metallic taste, the kind of sweetness unique to food started dancing on his tongue.
A tremendous sense of fulfillment overwhelmed him instantly.
He was so hungry.
Tearing vigorously, pieces of deer meat went down his gut.
He even felt his throat get scraped by the excessively coarse deer meat, but it didn't matter anymore.
Dizziness began to wash over him, and he leaned against a nearby tree, panting with satisfaction resonating from his chest.
"Even if it's toxic, who cares."
Lin Yu muttered indistinctly.
"It's not toxic."
The Scout, also stuffing himself with deer meat, struggled to swallow and then continued:
"But there's really something strange about the smell..."
"Eating it makes me feel...nauseous."
"Nauseous?"
Lin Yu was taken aback.
It was then that he noticed the strange taste the Scout mentioned.
But in fact, this taste didn't make him feel nauseous.
"I don't understand your feeling...I think it's quite tasty."
"Very delicious."
"Delicious is one thing."
The Scout kept stuffing food into his mouth.
"It's very delicious, but it doesn't stop it from being nauseating."
"Forget it, never mind that."
"At least we're sure it's not toxic!"
"We can survive now."
"That's right."
Lin Yu exhaled a deep breath.
The intense negative emotions from several days of insufficient food vanished in an instant. It was as if the dark clouds overhead were evaporated by the sunlight, and he felt an unprecedented sense of happiness.
This feeling, even when he "graduated" from the Holy Blood Temple, he had not experienced.
The two of them ate for a full 10 minutes, only stopping when their bellies were completely filled and the remnants of the deer meat lay scattered everywhere.
Lin Yu wiped his mouth, his face smeared with blood, creating a slightly intimidating appearance.
"Cut open this deer."
He said:
"Take out the entrails, separate the meat."
"We can't use fire, that's too conspicuous."
"Eat as much of the entrails as we can now; otherwise, they won't last long."
"Understood."
The Scout, slicing the deer's body with a knife, asked:
"Why not hunt more?"
"We need to."
Lin Yu retorted:
"But should we just leave this one? We still need to remove the entrails."
"Makes sense."
The Scout reached in to open the deer's abdominal cavity, but in that moment, his hands stopped suddenly.
"What's wrong?"
Lin Yu noticed the change in his expression.
In the dim starlight, a barely noticeable trace of fear appeared on the Scout's face.
Taking a deep breath, the Scout said:
"This deer isn't right."
"Damn it..."
"This deer has two hearts and three lungs!"
