Chapter 138: The Vehicle Is Here
The captain wiped his nose and said viciously, "This time, we're taking on a top-level task. My old squad leader is in charge of logistics. I'll go argue with him later; you all remember, pack as much as you can, at least enough ammunition for three rounds per person. Hang all the grenades and launchers you can carry! Otherwise, if a fight breaks out, there won't be a place for you to resupply, so don't complain if you get killed because of a lack of bullets."
Lin Jin paused, 'A fight breaks out? Hasn't there always been fighting?'
However, he kept silent, not daring to ask rashly.
The group followed the captain toward logistics.
At this moment, the entire temporary camp was as busy as a beehive. Two officers shouted commands at the servant soldiers to overturn abandoned vehicles onto the sidewalk. Freight trucks blared their horns but didn't slow down when encountering people, roaring engines swept past, kicking up waves of acid rain and curses. A soldier cursing with his gun wasn't satisfied and even pulled the bolt at the military truck, but only stopped after receiving a couple of slaps from the captain.
Lin Jin cautiously walked on the very edge, fearing the acid rain might touch his skin, though he wasn't afraid of its corrosive properties now, the habitual caution didn't fade so easily.
Yet even this didn't save him from misfortune, as he heard the massive rumblings from afar.
An armed helicopter lowered its altitude, skimming between the staggered buildings.
The fierce gusts blew the raindrops into a chaotic mess, lifting the puddles on the ground into splashy waves.
Then followed by luxury bulletproof cars cutting through like yachts, more than a dozen cars drew neat arcs before disappearing around the corner, leaving the battered squad behind.
"Bunch of damned bastards, fuckers!"
A soldier cursed angrily.
The captain didn't stop him, still spitting out sand.
Fortunately, the few of them were Evolvers, and apart from feeling uncomfortable, the acid rain didn't render them any less combat-capable.
"Who are those people?" Lin Jin asked cautiously.
This was the warfront, and such behavior seemed somewhat unusual.
The soldier beside him sneered, "Rich folk, they always say the apocalypse would reshuffle the deck, reshuffle my ass. The rich still stay rich, and all that changes is how they screw us common folks!"
"Bah!"
The captain wiped his face, saying grimly, "Enough talking, now it's about who survives the longest, not who's the flashiest. Right now, what we have to do is stay alive in the mission ahead!"
"Yes!"
The group responded as they reached logistics.
The captain went up to argue with the quartermaster, while they stuffed every pocket as full as they could, stopping only when they couldn't carry more.
In the midst of the quartermaster's good-natured complaints, the grinning captain led them onto the battlefield.
This time, their battlefield was in the Wenshu Lane District; the mission was to clear out the large number of Corpse Pupas about to advance to Tier One inside.
The Steel Council's clearance plan was from north to south, and Wenshu District was southeast of Changli County, meaning they'd have to leave the main force to a certain extent, making it relatively dangerous.
However, they weren't the only squad on a mission around; squads in the southwest were also holding the zombie tide at bay to prevent large-scale gatherings on the main battlefront.
After spending an hour, the group cautiously arrived at the designated battlefield.
The district wasn't large, with just twelve buildings surrounded by a four-meter-high pale yellow exterior wall. Tall trees extended beyond the walls; if it were before the apocalypse, perhaps they'd cast dappled shadows, but now only a trunk eroded grotesquely by acid rain remained. Eerie red plants twined around the tree, like venomous snakes siphoning nutrients from the tree, creeping over the wall, eyeing them coldly.
Using silenced pistols, they dealt with a few wandering zombies, and the captain gave a signal to the scout in the team.
The latter nimbly leapt onto a nearby electric scooter, grabbed the top of the wall, and scampered up.
The group clearly saw his body tense up.
After a moment, he carefully climbed down, his voice trembling, "It's full of Corpse Pupas inside. I counted over forty, and over a dozen Tier One Zombies."
They all drew a sharp breath.
Even Lin Jin furrowed his brow.
Previously, as servant soldiers, they didn't have to deal with Tier One Zombies, but occasionally when they broke through the defenses, they always caused massive casualties among the servant soldiers.
Neither the weapon-wielding, powerful Butcher nor the elusive Night Demon were something a recently evolved group could handle.
'No wonder it's a top-level task.'
"Can't we just not take this task?" someone tentatively asked.
The captain gave him a hard stare, "Compulsory task, you think I want it? Everyone's the same, stop complaining and get it done, otherwise when the night falls and those Night Demons come out, it'll only get worse."
Though reluctantly, their long-standing discipline made them habitual in executing orders first.
They hadn't even entered the district yet, but they saw a white Corpse Pupa in the security booth at the entrance.
The Corpse Pupa was so bloated it filled the tiny booth, even bursting some of the glass.
"With a body this size, there's probably a Butcher inside."
The scout said.
The captain looked around seeing no movements, his gaze swept over the team members and finally landed on Lin Jin, "Lin Jin, this Corpse Pupa is yours."
Hearing this, several in the group turned to look at the silent young man.
This was a test for the newcomer.
The soldier beside him patted Lin Jin's shoulder, "Just stay calm, the zombie inside of a Corpse Pupa isn't fully evolved, its combat power is just a bit stronger than ordinary zombies. Pierce it with a knife, then aim at its head with your handgun and shoot, just don't panic!"
