Aria Of The Cursed Dragon

Chapter 4: 4. The Aria

I.....Who am I?.....

Yes........I am Siegfried ...a Hero.....

.....

From the time he could remember he always wanted to help others even at the expense of himself. Because his greatest wish was to provide happiness to others.

An idealistic fool he may be but that was what he genuinely desired.

And that ended up with him having to battle against the evil dragon Fafnir, he emerged victorious slaying the dragon and bathing in its blood.

Obtaining an invulnerable body by bathing in the dragon's blood aided him in his quest to be a hero. During his travels, he came across Kriemhild, the princess of Burgundy, he was smitten by her beauty and proposed to her.

His wish was granted as he married the princess and joined the ranks of the Burgundians, aiding them in times of need, he was not comfortable participating in a war, he was a hero, not a butcher.

But at the same time, he couldn't stand back and watch as the war continued causing suffering to countless people and in the end his wife's family was asking for his aide.

He took his sword and entered the battlefield slaughtering his adversaries like a machine. With his intervention, the Burgundians won the war and he was lauded as a hero.

But he didn't feel happy, with his hands bathed in blood he felt more like a demon than a hero. He who wanted to save a thousand lives ended up taking thousands of lives instead. He couldn't help but question his purpose, his goals, his aspirations.

Was it worth it ?.....

He was lost and didn't know what to do thus he opted to just follow the orders of the King because he felt a King would want what was best for his people and in return, he would be guaranteeing the peace and prosperity of Burgundy.

How wrong he was ... the atrocities he committed, the countless people he slaughtered in the name of culling rebellions. Their cries of agony, sorrow and hatred resounded in his ears, haunting him, and keeping him awake at night.

There were times when he would break down in his wife's embrace, apologising like a broken record, where he would keep on muttering 'sorry', 'sorry', 'sorry' .....

Siegfried could feel his wife's love for him and from her eyes, he could see how much he meant to her. But it only made him feel more and more inferior and ashamed. He felt he was causing her unnecessary pain and felt that distancing himself from her would be better for her.

{ A.N: Self-righteous, Heroes are self-righteous }

But he didn't think this decision of his would only cause more pain to her ..... maybe he did but felt it was for the best. From a 'Hero' to an 'Executioner', that was what he felt like, the wails and screams and pleas of the people he killed resounded in his dreams and their vengeful souls seemed to want to swallow him alive.

These nightmares continued making him slowly lose his sanity and corrode his sense of reason.

But even during all of this Kriemhild was like his beacon of light, a shining ray of light illuminating the dark and dirty swamp that was his soul. He found solace in her and felt even more sure of his decision to distance himself....

.....

Due to his immense strength his brother-in-law the King of Burgundy had begun to become wary of him. Siegfried could understand and he didn't want to cause any more heartache to Kriemhild by starting a feud between her family.

Thus he took on a task given to him by the King to help him get married to the Queen of Iceland, it was dishonourable but Siegfried aided King Gunther in his battle against Brünnhilde by disguising himself as Gunther.

He defeated Brünnhilde and thus fulfilled the King's wish to marry her. But things didn't go as planned as Brünnhilde found out the truth and to take her revenge on the King she drugged Siegfried and slept with him before the wedding, giving her purity to the man she acknowledged.

But Siegfried was devastated as he felt he had betrayed his wife and the King. He felt guilty towards both Kriemhild and Brünnhilde, but he didn't get angry at Brünnhilde as he knew he was the one who had deceived her thus he felt inclined to accept Brünnhilde as his second wife.

This decision enraged the King and caused his wife to be sad. Although Kriemhild accepted it quickly as he could feel his wife's love towards him. He should have had a happy life ahead with two wonderful women in his life but he didn't catch on to the hatred of his brother-in-law.

Siegfried's whole body was invulnerable due to bathing in the dragon's blood except for his shoulder which was covered by a leaf. And this weakness of his was only known to his wives and his best friend who happened to be the King's advisor.

Siegfried never expected betrayal from his family or friends as he let down his guard around them...

.....

Siegfried was content and happy with his life but he still felt guilty towards his brother-in-law so when the King summoned him and requested his aid in overseeing a peace treaty with a neighbouring kingdom he was more than happy to lend his aid.

He felt peaceful in his heart thinking he could mend the rift formed between him and his wife's family but he failed to notice the sinister intentions of those around....
