Chapter 13: The Art of Psychological Warfare

"Who is the child in the photo?" Jinx suddenly became curious, pushing herself off with a foot and sliding her swivel chair next to Musk. "Is she your daughter?"

"What does it have to do with you?" Musk replied curtly.

"Oh, come on, just tell me. I'm bored anyway," Jinx said, hooking her arm around Musk's neck, pretending to show concern. "Why isn't her mom in the picture? Oh~ does she not have a mom?"

Jinx slid from left to right and back again, acting like a mischievous child. "Did you divorce her? Or did she die?"

"What are you trying to do?" Musk scowled. Why was this lunatic bringing up his daughter? As a father, he instinctively felt disgust and fear.

"I'm just concerned for her," Jinx continued. Over the years, she had mastered Justin's cunning smile, part mysterious, part mocking, part joyous, and with a touch of her own madness. "She has to sleep alone tonight, how~ sad~ Does she know her dad was taken by bad guys? Did she have dinner tonight, or is she going to bed hungry? Will she be unable to sleep because she misses her dad?"

"Shut up! Shut up!" Musk was finally provoked by Jinx's biting remarks, yet there was nothing he could do but lash out.

"You miss her, don't you?" Jinx leaned closer to Musk, her big blue eyes "innocently" blinking.

"I can let you see her, you know. I'll just have someone outside bring your daughter over. This is called—in Justin's words—humanitarianism."

"No, don't!" His daughter was his soft spot, and under Jinx's verbal assault, Musk completely gave up the dignity of a sheriff. "I'm begging you, don't involve my child!"

"Yes, you have a child. That esteemed councilor outside also has a child," Jinx lightly leaped onto the desk in front of Musk, looking down at him. "Parents in the Undercity also have children... but your child is more important than theirs, and her child is more important than yours, right? Sacrificing some less important people for one important person is quite common, isn't it?"

"Ten years ago, you sacrificed my parents for the safety of the Topsiders. So, would the councilor outside sacrifice you—and your daughter—for her daughter's safety?"

"…Are you here for revenge?"

"Oh, no..." For a moment, a sad expression actually appeared on Jinx's face, and her tone became pitiful. "I've long forgotten them. Let bygones be bygones. We must look toward the present and the future—that's what Justin says. So, I only care about what's happening now, the people in front of me."

Jinx raised her gun and clicked off the safety. "Say it again—I only want Justin."

"Bang!"
