Chapter 115: Chapter 115: Unwavering Vision
The Firelights' base buzzed with activity as the core team convened in the strategy room. Ekko stood at the center, his Swordbat resting against the table, its polished surface catching the light. Around him sat Powder, Vi, Claggor, Mylo, and a few of their trusted advisors, including Silco and Caitlyn. The mood was serious, yet there was an underlying determination in every face present.
Ekko glanced at each of them before speaking, his tone firm. "We've come far, but there's still a long road ahead. Zaun's getting better, but the threats keep coming—from the Chembarons, from Piltover politics, and now Ambessa's forces. We can't afford to lose focus."
Vi leaned back in her chair, her arms crossed. "The skirmish with Ambessa's troops was a wake-up call. They're testing the waters, figuring out our weaknesses. We can't let them find any."
"Agreed," Caitlyn chimed in, her voice calm but resolute. "My family's influence in Piltover has helped secure resources, but there are council members who are still hesitant. We need to keep proving that this alliance is worth their while."
Powder nodded, her gaze steady. "We also need to be ready for anything. I'm upgrading our tech, but it's going to take time. The Z-Drive is still a work in progress, and until it's ready, we have to rely on what we've got."
Silco, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke. His deep voice carried a weight that silenced the room. "Zaun has always thrived under pressure. This is no different. But remember, it's not just about defense. We need to be proactive. Take the fight to them when the time comes."
Ekko acknowledged Silco with a nod. Despite their complicated history, the man had proven to be a valuable ally. "You're right. And that's why we're not just focusing on Ambessa. We're also taking steps to secure Zaun's future. Projects that will improve lives, strengthen our defenses, and unite our people."
After the meeting, Ekko and Powder retreated to the workshop, their shared sanctuary where ideas became reality. The table was cluttered with blueprints, prototypes, and tools. The centerpiece was the Z-Drive, its core glowing faintly with untapped potential.
Powder picked up a wrench and adjusted one of the device's stabilizers. "You think the Z-Drive will really make a difference? I mean, it's cool and all, but... time travel? That's a lot to handle."
Ekko leaned against the table, watching her work. "It's not just about time travel. It's about giving us an edge. A way to correct mistakes before they become disasters. But you're right—it's a lot. That's why we're taking our time to get it right."
She smirked at him, setting the wrench down. "Look at you, Mr. Responsibility. Who would've thought?"
He grinned back, his tone playful. "Hey, someone has to keep us out of trouble."
Their banter lightened the mood, but the underlying seriousness remained. They both knew the stakes were higher than ever.
To clear their minds, Ekko and Powder decided to take a break and walk through Zaun. The city had changed significantly since the Firelights began their work. Streets that were once riddled with crime and despair now bustled with activity. Vendors sold their wares, children played without fear, and the people carried themselves with newfound pride.
As they walked, Powder pointed out small details that showed how far they'd come. "See that market over there? A year ago, it was controlled by the Chembarons. Now it's thriving. People are actually smiling."
Ekko nodded, his chest swelling with pride. "It's because of all of us. The Firelights, the Kiramman family, Silco's support—it's a team effort."
They stopped by a park where a group of kids was playing with handmade kites. One of the children ran up to Ekko, holding out a small, crudely built hoverboard.
"Ekko! Look what we made!" the boy exclaimed, his eyes shining with excitement.
Ekko crouched down, examining the board. "This is awesome. You built this yourself?"
The boy nodded eagerly. "Yeah! My friends and I used scraps we found. We wanna be like you someday."
Ekko ruffled the boy's hair, his smile genuine. "You already are. Keep it up, and who knows? You might be leading Zaun one day."
As they continued their walk, Powder leaned closer to Ekko. "You're really good with them, you know."
He shrugged, but there was a faint blush on his cheeks. "They remind me of us when we were kids. Full of dreams, ready to take on the world."
Their peaceful day was interrupted when a group of enforcers approached them. At the head of the group was Caitlyn, her expression a mix of relief and concern.
"I've been looking for you two," she said, her tone brisk. "There's been an incident at the Kiramman estate. Nothing serious, but my parents want to discuss some... developments."
Ekko and Powder exchanged a glance before nodding. "Lead the way," Ekko said.
At the estate, they were greeted warmly by Tobias and Cassandra Kiramman. Despite the gravity of the situation, the atmosphere was cordial.
"Ekko, Powder," Cassandra began, her tone measured. "We've received word that Ambessa's forces are mobilizing again. This time, they're targeting key supply routes."
Tobias added, "We believe they're trying to weaken Piltover and Zaun's alliance. If they succeed, it could undo everything we've worked for."
Ekko's jaw tightened. "We won't let that happen. The Firelights are ready to act."
Powder chimed in, her voice steady. "And we've been working on upgrades to our tech. They won't know what hit them."
Cassandra smiled, a hint of pride in her expression. "We knew we could count on you."
That evening, Ekko and Powder found themselves back on the rooftop of the Firelights' base. The city stretched out before them, its lights twinkling like stars in the dark.
Powder leaned against the railing, her gaze thoughtful. "Do you ever wonder if we'll get to see the end of all this? The peace we're fighting for?"
Ekko stepped beside her, his hand finding hers. "Yeah. And when we do, it'll be because of what we've built together."
She smiled, leaning her head on his shoulder. "You always know what to say."
They stood in silence, the weight of their responsibilities momentarily lifted by the quiet comfort of each other's presence. In that moment, the future didn't seem so uncertain. Together, they could face anything.
