Chapter 110: Chapter 110: Preparing for the Unknown
The workshop buzzed with quiet determination. Powder's newly upgraded arsenal sat gleaming on the workbench, a testament to her ingenuity and resolve. She and Ekko had spent the past few days testing, calibrating, and perfecting the weapons, ensuring they were ready for whatever lay ahead. Despite their recent victories and progress, an air of uncertainty loomed over Zaun and Piltover. The whispers of looming conflict kept everyone on edge.
Powder leaned back in her chair, stretching her arms above her head. "I think we're ready," she said, glancing at Ekko. "At least, as ready as we can be."
Ekko, sitting cross-legged on the floor with his Swordbat across his lap, nodded. "We'll need to be. If Ambessa's small army was just a test, the real storm is probably on its way."
Powder frowned, twirling a screwdriver in her hand. "Do you think she'll come herself next time?"
"Probably," Ekko said, his voice steady but laced with concern. "People like Ambessa don't send their armies to do all the work. They'll test the waters first, then strike hard when they think they've found a weakness."
Powder let out a low whistle. "Then we'd better make sure we don't have any weaknesses."
The Firelights met in their main hideout, a sprawling underground chamber illuminated by glowing crystals and bioluminescent plants. The leaders of the group sat around a large table, their faces a mix of determination and exhaustion. Vi, Claggor, Mylo, and other key figures were present, each ready to discuss their next steps.
Ekko stood at the head of the table, his presence commanding attention. Powder sat beside him, her arsenal spread out on a side table as a visual reminder of their readiness.
"We've made progress," Ekko began, his voice carrying through the room. "Zaun is stronger than it's ever been. Piltover is starting to see us as allies instead of enemies. But that doesn't mean we can get comfortable."
Vi leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table. "You think Ambessa's going to come back?"
"I don't think," Ekko said. "I know. And when she does, she won't be testing us anymore. She'll be trying to destroy us."
The room fell silent for a moment before Claggor spoke up. "What's the plan, then? We can't just sit around and wait for her to attack."
"We won't," Ekko said. "We're going to fortify. We're going to train. And we're going to make sure that when she comes, she finds out exactly how strong Zaun and Piltover can be when we stand together."
Powder chimed in, her voice steady. "I've been working on some upgrades—things that can help us hold our ground. But we'll need everyone's help to make it work."
After the meeting, Ekko and Powder made their way to the Kiramman estate. The alliance between the Firelights and the Kiramman family had been a game-changer, and now, more than ever, they needed to ensure that alliance remained strong.
Lady Cassandra Kiramman greeted them warmly, her husband Tobias standing at her side. Caitlyn and Vi were also present, the latter leaning casually against a bookshelf with her signature smirk.
"Ekko, Powder," Cassandra said, gesturing for them to sit. "What brings you here today?"
Ekko didn't waste time. "Ambessa's army was just the beginning. We're expecting a full-scale attack, and we need to make sure Piltover and Zaun are prepared."
Tobias nodded thoughtfully. "We've been hearing similar concerns from the council. They're nervous, especially after what happened with the Hextech."
Caitlyn crossed her arms. "Ambessa won't stop until she gets what she wants. The question is, how do we stop her?"
"We'll need resources," Powder said, her voice firm. "Materials for defenses, weapons, and training. We'll also need the council to be fully on board. If they hesitate, it could cost us everything."
Cassandra exchanged a glance with Tobias. "You'll have our support," she said. "And I'll make sure the council understands the stakes."
Over the next few weeks, Zaun and Piltover began to transform. The Firelights led training sessions for both Zaunites and Piltover enforcers, bridging the gap between the two groups. Ekko and Vi spearheaded the combat drills, their dynamic energy driving everyone to push harder.
Powder focused on sharing her knowledge of explosives and weapons, teaching others how to use her inventions safely and effectively. Watching her interact with the recruits, Ekko couldn't help but feel a swell of pride. She had grown so much, stepping into a role that balanced her wild creativity with a newfound sense of responsibility.
One afternoon, Powder approached Ekko during a break in training. "You've been quiet," she said, handing him a bottle of water. "What's on your mind?"
Ekko took a sip, his eyes scanning the training grounds. "Just thinking about what the future looks like if we win."
Powder raised an eyebrow. "When we win."
Ekko smiled. "Right. When we win."
As the sun set over Zaun, casting the city in hues of orange and gold, Ekko and Powder found themselves atop a rooftop, looking out over the bustling streets below. The sounds of laughter and music drifted up, a testament to the hope they had worked so hard to build.
Powder leaned against Ekko, her head resting on his shoulder. "Do you think it'll ever really be over? The fighting, the danger?"
Ekko wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer. "Maybe not completely. But we'll keep building something better, piece by piece. And as long as we're together, we'll figure it out."
Powder smiled, her fingers intertwining with his. "Together, huh?"
"Always," Ekko said, his voice filled with quiet determination.
For a moment, the weight of the world seemed to lift, leaving only the two of them and the city they loved. They knew the road ahead would be tough, but they also knew they had each other—and that made all the difference.
