Arc of Destiny

Chapter 8: Chapter 8: The Breakout

Chaos erupted as Eric charged forward, the reactor's glow blazing like a beacon in the dimly lit room. The guards moved in, their weapons drawn, but Eric's newfound agility and strength kept him one step ahead. He ducked under a swing, spinning to land a precise strike with his wrench on the guard's wrist. The weapon clattered to the floor.

"AI," Eric hissed, "priority target?"

"Director Kane is the strategic leader. Neutralizing her may disrupt coordination."

Eric's eyes snapped to Kane, who stood calmly amidst the chaos, her piercing gaze locked on him. She seemed unfazed, almost amused. Two guards lunged at Eric, forcing him to refocus. He sidestepped one, using his momentum to throw the other into a nearby console, sparks flying on impact.

"Enough!" Kane's voice cut through the clamor like a whip. The guards hesitated, creating a brief lull in the fight. "Eric, you're wasting energy. Surrender now, and we can resolve this without further—"

"Save it!" Eric shouted, his voice echoing. The reactor pulsed in response, releasing a shockwave that sent the remaining guards stumbling. "I'm done being someone else's pawn."

Kane's smirk faltered, her eyes narrowing. "You've made your choice." She gestured subtly, and more guards began flooding into the room. The air grew tense as Eric realized he was outnumbered and outgunned.

"Recommendation: Utilize environmental hazards to reduce hostile numbers."

Eric scanned the room, spotting an overhead vent system and several exposed electrical panels. An idea sparked. He sprinted toward the far wall, dodging gunfire as he went. The reactor glowed brighter, and with a surge of energy, he leaped higher than he thought possible, grabbing onto a dangling vent grate.

Using the vent as leverage, Eric kicked out, dislodging a heavy panel that crashed down on two guards below. The others hesitated, giving him just enough time to channel a controlled burst of energy into the exposed electrical panel. A shower of sparks erupted, short-circuiting the lights and plunging the room into darkness.

"Night vision mode activated."

Eric's vision adjusted, the room now bathed in a faint green glow through the AI's enhancement. The guards floundered in the dark, their advantage lost. Eric moved swiftly, taking them out one by one with calculated strikes.

Amidst the chaos, Kane's voice rang out again, calm but commanding. "Enough of this. Containment protocol Zeta."

The words sent a chill down Eric's spine. He turned just in time to see automated turrets descending from the ceiling, their barrels glowing ominously. A high-pitched whir filled the room as they locked onto him.

"Warning: Lethal automated systems engaged. Immediate evacuation recommended."

"No kidding," Eric muttered, diving behind a console as the turrets opened fire. Bullets ricocheted off the metal surfaces, sparks flying. He needed a way out, fast.

His eyes landed on a maintenance hatch partially obscured by debris. "AI, can I overload the reactor to disable those turrets?"

"Reactor overload will disable all electronics within a 20-meter radius. High risk of collateral damage."

"Do it," Eric said through gritted teeth. He crouched low, focusing on the warmth of the reactor. The glow intensified, spreading to his hands as the AI guided the energy.

The room shook as the reactor unleashed a massive pulse, the turrets sparking and going silent. Monitors shattered, and the hum of electronics died. Eric didn't wait to see the aftermath. He sprinted to the hatch, wrenching it open and dropping into the maintenance tunnels below.

The tunnels were narrow and suffocating, but they provided a temporary reprieve. Eric's breaths came in ragged gasps, his body aching from the fight. The AI's voice broke the silence.

"Reactor synchronization at 68%. Immediate repairs recommended to avoid further destabilization."

"Later," Eric panted, crawling through the tunnel. "Just get me out of here."

"Exit located. Proceed north for 200 meters."

Eric followed the AI's guidance, emerging into the cool night air behind the lab. He collapsed against a wall, the adrenaline wearing off. But his relief was short-lived. Distant sirens grew louder, and he knew reinforcements wouldn't be far behind.

"They just don't quit," he muttered, pushing himself to his feet. He had no idea where to go next, but one thing was clear: Kane and her organization wouldn't stop until they had the reactor.

And he wasn't about to let that happen.

Eric disappeared into the shadows once more, the city stretching endlessly before him.
