Chapter 20: Chapter 20: The Vanguard Strikes Back
The night was alive with chaos. Sentinel drones darted through the sky like predatory birds, their searchlights cutting through the darkness. On the ground, armored vehicles closed in, their engines roaring as they approached the Vanguard's hideout. The air was thick with tension, and every passing second felt like an eternity.
Eric adjusted the straps of his gear, his reactor humming faintly as it calibrated to his rising adrenaline. The others were already in position, their weapons primed and ready. Nyssa stood beside him, her rifle slung across her back and a determined look etched on her face.
"We hold the line until the evac is ready," the commander's voice crackled through their comms. "No unnecessary risks. Stick to your training and watch each other's backs."
Eric nodded, even though the commander couldn't see him. "Got it. Nyssa, you good?"
She gave a curt nod, her grip tightening on her weapon. "Always. Let's show them what happens when they corner us."
The first wave hit hard. Sentinel's infantry moved in disciplined formations, their energy rifles lighting up the battlefield. Eric's reactor flared as he unleashed a burst of energy, creating a barrier that deflected an incoming barrage. Beside him, Nyssa picked off targets with deadly precision, her shots finding their marks with unerring accuracy.
"Left flank! They're pushing hard!" Blaze's voice rang out over the comms.
Torque responded with a roar of defiance, launching a grenade that detonated amidst the advancing troops, scattering them like leaves in a storm. "Not anymore, they're not!"
Above them, Pixel and Jax worked furiously to maintain the hideout's automated defenses. Turrets mounted on the perimeter swiveled and fired, cutting down drones and soldiers alike. But even with the defenses, the sheer numbers of Sentinel's forces were overwhelming.
"Evac in five minutes," the commander's voice broke through the noise. "Hold your positions until then. No heroics."
Eric exchanged a glance with Nyssa. "Five minutes might as well be five hours at this rate."
"Then let's make them count," she replied, her tone steely.
A Sentinel exo-suit emerged from the smoke, its operator targeting Eric with a plasma cannon. The blast came fast, but Eric was faster. His reactor surged as he absorbed the energy, redirecting it into a focused beam that tore through the suit's armor. The pilot slumped forward as the suit collapsed in a smoking heap.
"Nice save," Nyssa said, taking out another drone.
"Thanks. Let's keep it up."
The ground beneath them trembled as a Sentinel heavy tank rolled into view. Its turret rotated, locking onto their position.
"We've got a problem!" Blaze shouted, his flamethrower useless against the tank's reinforced plating.
"On it!" Torque yelled, sprinting toward the vehicle. He dodged incoming fire with surprising agility for his size, planting explosives along the tank's undercarriage. As he dove for cover, the charges detonated, sending the massive machine toppling sideways in a fiery explosion.
"Tank neutralized," Torque reported, a grin audible in his voice.
"Good work," the commander said. "Evac is two minutes out. Stay sharp."
The roar of engines signaled the arrival of the extraction team. A sleek transport ship descended, its side hatches opening to reveal mounted turrets that provided suppressive fire.
"Everyone move!" the commander ordered.
Eric and Nyssa provided cover as Blaze, Torque, and Pixel boarded the ship. Jax hesitated, his eyes darting to a nearby console.
"Jax, what are you doing?" Pixel shouted.
"I've almost cracked their comms," he replied. "This could give us the edge we need!"
"We don't have time!" Eric yelled, but Jax's fingers were already flying across the console.
With seconds to spare, Jax tore himself away and sprinted for the transport. He leapt aboard just as the ship's engines roared to life, lifting them out of the battlefield. Below, the hideout erupted in flames as Sentinel's forces overran it.
Onboard, the team collapsed into their seats, exhaustion etched on every face. The commander's voice was firm despite the tension. "We've lost the hideout, but we're alive. That's what matters. Jax, tell me you got something."
Jax plugged a drive into the ship's terminal. "It's not much, but it's enough. Coordinates, troop movements… and a partial schematic for the Nexus Protocol."
The room fell silent at the mention of the Nexus. Eric's reactor pulsed faintly as he spoke. "Then we hit them back. Harder than ever."
The commander nodded. "Agreed. Sentinel's going to regret pushing us this far. Rest up. We've got a war to win."
