Arc of Destiny

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: The Breach

The lab loomed ahead, its steel facade reflecting the pale moonlight. Sentinel's fortress was designed to intimidate, with towering walls and automated turrets scanning the perimeter. The faint hum of security drones patrolling the skies filled the air. Eric tightened his grip on his wrench, the reactor's pulse syncing with his racing heart.

From their vantage point, the team observed the facility's defenses. Blaze crouched beside Eric, her eyes scanning the layout. "Those turrets will tear us apart if we're spotted," she whispered. "We'll need a distraction."

Torque, leaning against a tree, grinned. "Leave that to me. Give me five minutes and they'll be looking everywhere but here." He hoisted a satchel of explosives onto his shoulder and vanished into the shadows.

"Everyone knows their roles," the commander said, her voice low but commanding. "Stick to the plan. And remember, this isn't just about taking out a lab—it's about sending a message. Let's move."

Eric nodded, his resolve hardening. He followed Nyssa and the assault team as they crept toward the lab's eastern gate. Blaze and Torque's demolitions squad veered off to the west, while Pixel and Jax took the northern route to access the lab's mainframe.

The first explosion shattered the silence, a fireball erupting on the western side of the facility. Sirens blared, and the turrets swiveled toward the source of the commotion. Guards scrambled, shouting orders as chaos unfolded.

"That's our cue," Nyssa said, her voice steady. She led the team to the gate, where Eric's reactor began to hum louder. He stepped forward, raising his hand. A burst of energy surged from the reactor, shorting out the electronic lock. The gate creaked open, and the team slipped inside.

They moved quickly, sticking to the shadows. Eric's heart pounded as they approached the main courtyard. A squad of guards stood between them and the lab's entrance. Nyssa signaled for them to hold.

"Eric," she whispered, "we need a diversion. Think you can handle that?"

He smirked, gripping his wrench. "I've got this."

Before anyone could protest, Eric stepped into the open, the reactor glowing brightly. The guards froze, their weapons trained on him.

"Hey!" Eric called, swinging his wrench in a wide arc. "You looking for me?"

The guards opened fire, but Eric was already moving. He darted between cover, the reactor's energy amplifying his speed. Bolts of plasma whizzed past him as he led the guards away from the team. With a well-timed leap, he vaulted over a stack of crates and disappeared into the shadows.

Nyssa and the others used the distraction to their advantage, slipping into the lab undetected. Inside, the sterile white corridors were eerily silent, the hum of machinery the only sound.

"Pixel, we're in," Nyssa said into her comm. "What's the quickest route to the mainframe?"

Pixel's voice crackled in her ear. "Take the next left, then a right. You'll see a security checkpoint. Disable it, and you're golden."

Nyssa relayed the instructions, and the team moved swiftly. They encountered minimal resistance, thanks to Eric's diversion. When they reached the checkpoint, Nyssa gestured to one of the engineers.

"Jax, you're up."

Jax stepped forward, pulling a small device from his belt. He connected it to the security panel, his fingers flying across the interface. "Just a few seconds..."

The sound of footsteps echoed down the corridor. Nyssa raised her weapon, signaling the team to take cover. A patrol of guards appeared, their faces tense. Nyssa held her breath, her finger on the trigger.

Before the guards could react, Jax's device beeped. The lights flickered, and the security panel sparked. The checkpoint's doors slid open, and the guards spun around, startled.

"Now!" Nyssa shouted.

The team sprang into action, taking down the guards with precision. Within moments, the corridor was clear, and they pressed onward.

Outside, Eric faced his own challenges. The guards had called for reinforcements, and a combat drone now hovered above the courtyard, its red sensors locking onto him.

"You've got to be kidding me," he muttered, ducking behind a pillar as the drone fired a barrage of plasma bolts. The reactor flared, and Eric felt its power surge through him. He clenched his fists, channeling the energy into a focused burst.

Leaping out of cover, he hurled the burst of energy at the drone. The impact sent it spiraling, its systems glitching. Seizing the opportunity, Eric grabbed a loose pipe from the ground and launched himself at the machine. He struck its sensor array, sparks flying as the drone crashed to the ground.

Eric landed with a thud, breathing heavily. His body ached, but he couldn't stop now. Sentinel would keep coming, and he had to buy the team more time.

Inside the lab, Pixel and Jax reached the mainframe. The massive server tower loomed before them, its lights blinking in rhythmic patterns.

"This is it," Pixel said, her voice tinged with excitement. "Cover me while I extract the data."

Jax nodded, keeping his weapon ready as Pixel plugged her device into the mainframe. Her fingers danced across the keyboard, lines of code scrolling rapidly on the screen.

"How long?" Nyssa asked, her eyes scanning the room for threats.

"A few minutes," Pixel replied. "This system's got layers of encryption. They didn't make it easy."

"Just hurry," Nyssa urged.

The sound of alarms blaring signaled that their presence had been detected. Nyssa's grip tightened on her weapon as she took up a defensive position.

"We've got company!" Jax called, firing at the first wave of guards that burst into the room.

"Pixel, now would be a good time to finish," Nyssa shouted.

"Almost there!" Pixel said, her voice strained.

Eric's voice crackled over the comm. "Whatever you're doing, do it fast. I'm running out of tricks out here!"

The battle intensified as more guards poured in. Nyssa's team held their ground, but the odds were stacked against them. Finally, Pixel's device beeped.

"Got it!" she exclaimed. "Data's secure. Let's get out of here!"

Nyssa signaled the retreat, and the team fought their way back through the corridors. The lab shook as Blaze's explosives detonated, sending shockwaves through the structure. By the time they reached the extraction point, Eric was waiting, battered but alive.

The team piled into the hovertruck, the engines roaring to life. As they sped away, the lab erupted in flames, a plume of smoke rising into the night sky.

Eric slumped against the wall of the truck, his chest heaving. Nyssa sat beside him, a rare smile on her face.

"We did it," she said.

Eric nodded, exhaustion washing over him. "Yeah. But this is just the beginning."
