Arc of Destiny

Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Into the Lion’s Den

The city's skyline shimmered against the inky darkness, the towering Sentinel communication hub glowing ominously like a beacon of power. Eric tightened his grip on the makeshift utility belt Nyssa had thrown together. The reactor hummed softly, its faint glow hidden beneath his jacket. He was perched on a rooftop opposite the facility, the infiltration team—Nyssa and two operatives named Kade and Lina—already making their way toward their entry point.

"You ready, Stanton?" Nyssa's voice crackled over the comm. Her tone was steady, but Eric could detect the undercurrent of tension.

"As ready as I'll ever be," he muttered, adjusting the earpiece.

"Keep their eyes on you. We'll handle the rest."

Eric exhaled sharply and turned his gaze to the facility. Sentinel had spared no expense in protecting their hub. Security drones hovered in precise patterns, guards patrolled in pairs, and automated turrets lined the perimeter. The infiltration team's best chance was through a hidden maintenance tunnel, but for that to work, Eric needed to draw every ounce of attention to himself.

"Alright, Reactor. Let's make some noise," he murmured, stepping to the edge of the rooftop.

With a burst of energy, Eric leapt down, landing with a jarring roll that set his knees alight with pain. The guards at the nearest checkpoint whirled, startled by the sudden appearance of a man seemingly dropping from the sky. Eric didn't give them time to react. He charged, the reactor's glow intensifying as he closed the distance.

His first strike was brutal, the wrench slamming into a guard's chest and sending him sprawling. The second guard raised his rifle, but Eric unleashed a pulse of energy that sent the weapon skittering out of his grasp. With a spinning kick, he knocked the guard unconscious.

The alarm blared, the sound echoing through the compound.

"Showtime," Eric muttered, sprinting toward the main courtyard. His comm buzzed as Nyssa's voice came through.

"You've got their attention. Keep it up, Eric. We're almost in."

A squad of guards poured into the courtyard, their rifles trained on him. Eric skidded to a halt, raising his hands in mock surrender.

"Hey, fellas. Did you miss me?" he quipped, before slamming his palms together. The reactor emitted a blinding flash of light, disorienting the guards. Eric didn't waste the opportunity. He dashed forward, disarming one guard and using his rifle to knock another out cold. The remaining guards hesitated, their formation breaking as they tried to recover.

Eric's chest heaved as the reactor's energy coursed through him. It was exhilarating but draining, each burst of power taking a toll. He ducked behind a column as reinforcements arrived, their heavy boots pounding against the pavement.

Overhead, a Sentinel combat drone appeared, its red sensors locking onto Eric.

"Oh, great. You again," he muttered, gripping his wrench tightly. The drone's plasma cannon powered up, the hum growing louder with each passing second.

Eric darted out from cover, narrowly avoiding the first barrage of plasma bolts. The heat singed his back, but he kept moving, zigzagging to make himself a harder target. He hurled his wrench, the makeshift weapon striking the drone's sensor array and sending it into a momentary frenzy.

"Nyssa, how's it going on your end?" he panted, ducking as another volley of plasma bolts ripped through the air.

"Almost there," came her terse reply. "Just hold on a little longer."

"Easier said than done," Eric muttered, diving behind a stack of metal crates. He needed to think fast. The guards were closing in, and the drone was recalibrating, its weapons primed for another assault.

A sudden idea struck him. The reactor's energy was volatile, but maybe he could use that to his advantage. Eric placed his hand over the reactor, focusing on the pulsing energy within. The device responded, its glow intensifying as he channeled the power outward.

The drone fired, but this time, Eric met the attack head-on. He unleashed a concentrated burst of energy, the two forces colliding in a dazzling explosion. The shockwave knocked Eric off his feet, sending him sprawling across the ground. When the smoke cleared, the drone was a smoking heap of metal, its circuits fried.

Eric groaned, his entire body aching. He struggled to his feet, leaning heavily against a crate. The guards had been thrown into disarray by the explosion, giving him a brief reprieve.

"Eric," Nyssa's voice crackled through the comm, "We're in. Planting the charges now."

"Good," he managed, wiping sweat from his brow. "Because I don't think I can keep this up much longer."

The minutes stretched into an eternity as Eric fended off the remaining guards, using every ounce of his strength and ingenuity to stay one step ahead. Finally, Nyssa's voice came through, clear and triumphant.

"Charges are set. Extraction in five."

"About time," Eric muttered, his vision swimming. The reactor's energy was nearly depleted, and his body felt like it was made of lead. He staggered toward the extraction point, dodging sporadic gunfire from the remaining guards.

As he rounded the corner, the hovertruck screeched to a halt in front of him, the back door swinging open. Nyssa leaned out, her hand extended.

"Come on, Eric!"

With the last of his strength, Eric lunged forward, grabbing her hand as she pulled him into the truck. The vehicle sped off, the facility shrinking into the distance. Moments later, a series of explosions lit up the night sky, the communication hub reduced to a smoldering ruin.

Eric collapsed onto the floor of the truck, his chest heaving. Nyssa knelt beside him, a rare smile on her face.

"You did it," she said softly.

Eric managed a weak laugh. "We did it."

As the truck disappeared into the shadows, Eric allowed himself a moment of relief. They had struck a blow against Sentinel, but he knew the war was far from over. This was only the beginning.
