Chapter 61: Chapter 60: The Situation in Yanjing
With her prestigious family background, Ouyang Xue had never had any friends she could truly confide in since childhood, until she met Ye Zian at Xiacheng University. His polite demeanor towards everyone gradually captured Ouyang Xue's heart.
"But now, I have the ability to protect you, and I don't want to have any regrets."
Since Ouyang Xue wasn't the heroine of the book, Ye Zian didn't have to worry about the interference of fate's will. He decided to take action first.
Looking into Ye Zian's sincere eyes, Ouyang Xue finally nodded shyly.
The pink Peppa Pig pajamas were casually tossed aside by Ye Zian, revealing a surprisingly cute side of the usually cool Ouyang Xue.
The unfortunate Ye Zian began his third round of training for the day.
As a mysterious power was absorbed by Ouyang Xue, she finished her first training session and fell into a deep sleep in Ye Zian's arms.
At the temporary operations command on the outskirts of Yanjing City in the Great Summer Country,
A middle-aged officer briskly walked into the hastily erected tent, stood tall, and saluted the seven people discussing at the conference table.
Although all seven were over sixty, their faces appeared youthful, and their natural aura of authority made even the battle-hardened middle-aged officer feel a sense of apprehension.
Seeing the officer enter, the seven stopped their discussion, and seven sharp gazes focused on him.
Steadying his mind, the officer calmly reported:
"The 150,000 garrison troops of Yanjing have already assembled nearby, but recapturing Yanjing is proving more difficult than anticipated."
"Conventional firearms are completely ineffective, and heavy weapons have disappeared without a trace. Even basic gunpowder cannot be successfully formulated, leaving the troops with only cold weapons to kill zombie-like creatures."
"The regular zombies are manageable, but there are many strangely shaped mutant zombies among them, causing significant casualties to the troops."
After speaking, he distributed a few documents to the seven people present.
The photos depicted a bizarre-looking monster corpse, its body charred by flames, lying on the ground.
"This single monster cost an entire battalion of 500 soldiers, and it was only defeated when the battalion commander drove a fuel truck into it, perishing with the monster. This card found under the monster's body remained unscathed by the fire."
The officer handed over a card surrounded by a purple glow, with traces of fresh blood still on it.
The elderly man in the center remained silent; he was Ouyang Xue's father, Ouyang Zhen, the highest commander of the Great Summer Country.
Ouyang Zhen sighed, gently picked up the card, carefully wiped the bloodstains with his sleeve, and began examining it closely.
The card didn't feel like paper; it seemed to be made of a special lightweight metal. The front of the card depicted a dark blue scepter.
[Ice Scepter, enhances the user's ice abilities, consumes a certain amount of mental power, and can summon multiple blizzards within a range.]
The card was passed around the seven people before returning to the elder's hand.
Though they recognized the words, how to use the card remained a mystery. Was it just an ordinary card coincidentally found under the monster's body?
Ouyang Zhen returned the card to the officer and said:
"Have the research institute quickly verify the authenticity and usage of this card. The troops should pause their attack and build defensive structures on the outskirts."
"Understood."
The officer took the card, saluted again, and left the tent.
Ouyang Zhen tapped his finger on the table, the light sound carrying great authority, and addressed the six others:
"Let's hear your thoughts on this disaster. Is it an act of enemy nations, or a rare natural calamity, and what are the current tasks for the troops?"
The elderly man on Ouyang Zhen's left, wearing glasses, saw the others waiting for someone to speak. As the second-in-command, Li Qingshan had to offer his suggestion first.
Adjusting his thick glasses, Li Qingshan analyzed:
"I believe this disaster doesn't seem like something caused by other countries. It resembles a prelude to war initiated by an unfamiliar civilization, destroying local weapons and forcing enemies back to an agrarian civilization."
Li Qingshan's words were enlightening, and Ouyang Zhen nodded, urging him to continue.
"If it were the work of other countries, they would have taken action within these six days. Moreover, many top-secret military depots' heavy weaponry disappeared inexplicably, clearly beyond the technological level and reconnaissance means of other nations. I deduce it is the work of an unknown civilization, using these mindless zombies as advance troops for reasons we do not yet understand."
The elder stood and pointed to a spot on the map.
"Recapturing Yanjing is too challenging. Our urgent task is to establish a new Yanjing base here to guard against potential enemies."
The location he indicated was less than ten kilometers away, a newly planned district mostly completed but not yet officially in use.
"The area is sparsely populated but well-equipped with infrastructure, and it's close to major steel plants and granaries in Hebei Province, allowing for easy replenishment of essential supplies."
Li Qingshan's suggestion was unanimously approved by everyone.
Standing up, Ouyang Zhen spoke solemnly:
"Han Yunfeng, you are responsible for commanding the 50,000 troops of the First Army Group to search for survivors nearby and guard against zombies potentially leaving Yanjing. He Wenping will lead the Third Army Group and local civilians to build a 30-meter-high, 10-meter-wide wall around the new district. Zhang Guang will lead the 50,000 troops of the Second Army Group to quickly clear zombies from nearby granaries and transport the grain and steel back to the new district."
The three elderly officers on Ouyang Zhen's right, clearly military officials, stood up in unison and replied:
"We will complete the mission."
"Li Qingshan, you are tasked with handling personnel arrangements and material distribution in the new district, and finding ways to notify military and civilian organizations for self-rescue. Li Qingsong, you will organize people to cultivate wasteland and plant easy-to-grow crops. Liu Xueyi, you will take over the research institute, continuing gunpowder research while focusing on the development and manufacture of cold weapons."
In a brief half-hour meeting, the seven quickly addressed the difficulties facing Yanjing and distributed tasks efficiently, proceeding in an orderly manner.
Near midnight, Ouyang Zhen returned to his temporary tent, exhausted. While the major framework was set, minor details still required ongoing adjustments.
Inside, an elderly woman with red eyes was caressing a photograph of Ouyang Xue with them. She was Ouyang Xue's mother, Xie Wan.
Seeing Ouyang Zhen return, she wiped her tears and said worriedly:
"Old man, I wonder how Xiaoxue is doing in Xiacheng, if she's safe."
