Chapter 248: Caught in a lie.
The faint morning light slanted through the wide medic bay windows, washing the room with a gentle brightness. Sunshine stirred in her sleep, her breathing calm. Beside her Castiel lay tucked beneath a thin blanket, his cheeks flushed but no longer burning of fever.
On her other side was White, drinking his first bottle of milk of the day which had been provided by Hades. It had been a bribe for the bear not to wake Sunshine up and it worked.
The little bear was treating Hades like a worker, taking time to feed as if it paid him for the job. Every time he took his hand from the bottle, it squeaked and waved its paws in the air.
Hades considered it a threat. "Put the bottle down and I will wake her up." So, he had no choice but to stay until the bottle was finished and then he patted the bear back to sleep.
"How did I end up a father slash slave to a mutated bear." He whispered as he covered White. "If I ever meet your biological father, I am going to demand for child support."
White turned, moving closer to Sunshine. He purred and relaxed like he could sense that he was in safe arms.
He leaned down and whispered to White, "As soon as you put on some fat and meat, I am throwing you to Lisha."
White whimpered like he heard the threat and understood it.
Hades backed away from the bear cub, hoping that his wife had not heard him make the threat. The way she dotted on the bear, he would be the one getting thrown out of the house if he tried to send it away.
Lisha would not take him in; she would move in with Sunshine like she had always wanted to.
Machines hummed gently, their soft beeps almost blending with the rhythm of breathing from those who were sleeping.
Hades tiptoed out of the room, left the medic bay and returned home.
The door was opened by Tank, the robot. He was yet to get used of the machine in their house.
"Good morning, Tank." He greeted it, patting its arm like one would a pet dog.
"Good morning, Foreman Hades. The weather today is even colder; would you like a thicker jacket?"
Hades shook his head. "Warm water for a bath first and then breakfast. Make a nutritious breakfast for the family, keep in mind that my wife must enjoy it. She also has a sweet tooth." When he delivered it, he would exaggerate his role in the cooking process.
"We have abalones in the fridge. Abalone porridge will make a sweet nutritious breakfast. Is that good enough?"
Hades was impressed. He was certain that Sunshine had mislabeled the robot. It was not a construction robot; it was a housekeeping robot.
"Alright Tank, let us make this abalone porridge."
The two got to work and soon, the savory scent of the porridge began filling the air.
While Tank prepared the side dishes, Hades wandered into Sunshine's workshop in the house. It was a room which should have been used as a study but who needed a study in the apocalypse? His wife's work was more important. Their survival depended on it.
Dust lay thinly over her desk, one of her tool belts hung limply on the hook on the wall. There was some rubbish here and there, probably because Tank had been in there working at night.
Hades did not want Sunshine to find the place disorganized. Quietly, he began to clean. He polished her hammer until the dull steel gleamed. On impulse, he raised and waved it like she often did, expecting it to shift into its enlarged form. Nothing happened and he was disappointed.
He really wished to wield her hammer someday and crush something. But he was embarrassed to say this to her.
Jo-stride clicked in amusement. "Did you really think that it would grow bigger Hades?" A short electronic laugh burst from it, mocking him.
"Oh, shut up." Hades muttered, but even he chuckled at himself.
By the time the breakfast was ready, he had finished cleaning and showering. He changed into new clothes, packed all the food carefully and drove back to the medic bay.
****
It was 9:00am, he was just in time for the morning rounds. The medic bay was crawling with doctors, interns and nurses.
It smelled like soap and antiseptic having been cleaned at 7:00 a.m.
Hades had his nose crinkled for that reason as he listened to Doctor Choi, wondering when the man had last rested.
Dr. Choi's coat was creased, his eyes tired and his hair was a mess. But he didn't seem to care about his appearance. His eyes were on his patient Castiel. "Fever's down which is good, but Nurse Rooney mentioned that Castiel has a rash on his stomach. Might be harmless, could be an allergy. I would prefer that he stays today, and we do some tests.....just to be safe."
He lifted the blanket and exposed Castiel's stomach. The rash was minor, and the affected area was small. "Mmm, looks like the cream worked so there is nothing to worry about. He will be discharged tonight or tomorrow if nothing else happens."
"Thank you doctor." Hades and Sunshine said in unison.
Doctor Choi and his group left.
Then, Hades proudly unveiled the breakfast, starting with the steaming porridge. "I cooked it myself." He announced.
The children inhaled the delicious scent.
Sunshine's brows shot up. "If your dad cooked this, we might all be safer with hospital jello."
Then they all burst into laughter.
"Father, you?" Ariel teased.
"Tank cooked this for sure." Earl stated with certainty like he had proof.
White squeaked as if he agreed with everyone.
Sunshine let out a hum." It would be burnt, that is for sure."
Hades raised his hands in mock surrender. "Fine. Fine. Tank did most of the heavy lifting, but I did help....just a little."
Their laughter filled the room, and he set everything down for them to eat.
Not long after breakfast, Rori arrived to take over Castiel's care. Sunshine tried to refuse but Rori gave her a pointed look, reminding her that she and Hades still had a base to manage.
She gave in and handed White to her as well, feeling sorry for the bear when Rori pulled out a new sweater and winter hat clearly meant for it.
From there, Hades and Sunshine went to the reception desk together to ask about Sheldon. Nurse Kendall was on duty, and she explained that his arm had been stitched back on successfully, but he needed close monitoring.
Hades bristled, not liking the idea of having Sheldon at the base, but he was not cruel. He assigned Phillip Harg the duty of watching Sheldon.
Sunshine smiled at Phillip, though her words were stern. "Take it easy, do not push yourself. Congratulations on your recovery and full awakening."
Philip smiled cockily. He was a pyrokinetic and he loved lighting cigarettes for others with his finger. He didn't care what anyone said. Being a superhuman was cool.
Next time there was a mission, his name was going to be first on the list. This was a promise to himself.
"What do I do if this Sheldon makes another stupid choice while you are not around?" He asked Sunshine.
"Take his other hand." Hades replied. "Some lessons are learned the hard way."
Sunshine wondered if Sheldon had learned his lesson on making bad decisions. Would he truly need another one?
