Chapter 241: A risky move.
"They are moving to hide underground." Tommy shouted, alerting them.
His voice was trembling like a thin tree in the wind and his legs were shaking. The voltage he was releasing was coming out in short bursts, shot from twitching hands.
Sunshine's brains swirled with options of what to do as the last thing she needed was for any beetle to escape. One escapee could reproduce and another colony would be built.
"Hell no." she growled out and squatted down. Her bare hands slapped the snow, releasing a burst of energy that stared turning the snow into hardened ground.
She covered every crook and cranny, pushing her power all the way into the ground. The beetles inside froze and the ones on the surface staggered as they could no longer enter into the ground to hide.
[WARNING. WARNING. Massive power overdraw. Host, pull back before your body requires a repair.]
She heard the sound in her mind and lifted her hands from the ground. Her breathing was rugged as she stood up slowly and realized she had frozen a lot of ground, more than what was necessary.
But, at least she had prevented a danger.
Her eyes swept the battle field as the fight was not over. The beetles trapped in the ice wall were fighting back, simultaneously releasing fire to melt the wall. She could tell that it was not going to trap them much longer.
Sunshine raised her hands and lowered them. After the system's warning, she did not want to exhaust herself to a point of death. She needed to do something else.
"System, any help?"
[Let me get back after assessing the situation.]
She looked at Tommy, the fastest way to eliminate them all was using his abilities but he was struggling and electrocuting one wall at a time, targeting one bug with each strike. He was too slow.
"Tommy faster." Sunshine told him.
His eyes burned with desperation as he looked at her. He thought fast, his young face sharp with a reckless idea that he had been meaning to bring to her but never dared to.
He knew what he was thinking of doing was dangerous but Sunshine was a superhuman, she would not die the way others would.
He stepped forward, chest heaving. "Mrs. Quinn, apologies in advance because this is going to hurt but it is all I can think of doing at the moment."
Sunshine frowned, her lips parting. "What...."
Before the full question could depart from her mouth, Tommy placed two hands firmly on her shoulders.
A violent current passed through her body.
Electricity run through her veins, filling every vein with hot energy like burning gas. Sunshine gasped when the bolts of lightning cracked out of her hands, leaping into the ice walls.
The ice walls lit up with jagged veins of light, glowing with blue fire that exploded like fireworks. The ice prisons became death chambers for the beetles. Every single one screamed in agony convulsing as massive electric current ripped through them. Their bodies twitched, legs curling before they were torn apart or dried up.
Sunshine's pained screams filled the air and they did not stop until every beetle was dead and nothing on the ground was moving.
Silence filled the air, only the humming of disruptors and faint sizzling of charred beetle flesh remained.
Everyone stared at the two superhumans, eyes wide, breath held.
Even the watchers.
Pink leaned forward as if pulled by invisible strings, tilting its head in disbelief. Then it lifted its head, narrowing it's eyes which were full of curiosity and fixing them on Sunshine.
It's eyes glowed faintly with cold fury as if asking itself what kind of creature Sunshine was. Or wondering who had given her the permission to finish off the beetle colony.
Sunshine looked back at the beetle, breathing raggedly. Her body felt empty, like a battery that had been drained of everything.
Tommy took his hands off her shoulders, stumbled back two steps and collapsed with a strangled groan. Smoke rose from his nostrils, ears even finger tips. His chest heaved, sweat poured down his brow, his skin was dark like he had rolled around in charcoal dust. Much like Sunshine, he looked and felt hollowed out.
But while she still had the power to stand, he did not.
"Tommy!" Sunshine screamed and dropped to her knees beside him, heart clenching. She slid a hand behind his head, her eyes frantic. "Are you alright?"
The others rushed to their side, more worried about them than the watchers.
He blinked weakly at her, his lips trembled, his voice cracked; "How are you okay?" His eyes laced with shock, reflecting the same disbelief on every other person's face.
"Who says I am?" She coughed.
Elio offered them some re-energizing water. "Ma'am are you sure you are fine? I mean.....that was a mega voltage that went through you. We need medics and..."
"I am good Elio." She reached for a coconut bean in her pocket, split it open and poured the liquid into Tommy's mouth.
He gulped twice, swallowing everything.
She shoved a handful of beans in his mouth as well, "Eat, regain your strength."
He chewed, swallowing with effort, his breathing easing slightly between coughs.
Sunshine stood up, unfurling her fingers. Sparks of electricity danced between them, snapping faintly in the cold air. Her heart jolted at the sight as she realized that something had changed within her. She felt different, like the current her stitched itself into her bones.
It didn't belong there but it fit naturally as if it had always belonged.
Much as she wanted to look into the situation, it would have to wait until they were safely back on the base. She turned her attention to the team. "Good work everyone, it is too early to relax. Spread out in groups of three, inspect the ground and make sure that no beetle has escaped."
The men nodded, shoulders still trembling from adrenaline. They moved quickly, boots crunching on the gunk stained snow. The night vision goggles had scan features which made the job faster. No bug was found alive.
When they returned, Elio asked her about the sonic disruptors.
"They can only be used once." she replied. "They are useless now."
They were already showing signs of crumbling and soon would be nothing but black ash. It was best to leave them where they were.
She checked on the men that been jolted by the sonic disruptors earlier. They seemed fine although their hands still trembled.
The ones that had bled from their ears were also swallowing pills made from the red fang flowers.
Meanwhile Sheldon stood apart from the rest, his phone clutched tight in his hands. The screen repaying the scene of Sunshine and Tommy combining their abilities. He grinned maniac with awe.
"Those idiots are going to be so angry they missed all this action." He let out a mischievous laugh as he stepped forward, approaching the trees where the watchers were still perched.
"What the hell..." Elio muttered.
Sunshine turned around because she did not like the look in Elio's eyes. She suspected what Sheldon was up to and hissed.
"Get back here moron, leave the watchers alone." She shouted.
Her voice was carried through the wind and snowflakes. But he did not listen, his legs carried him forward.
Two men moved forward and she stopped them, worried because she could sense a shift in the energy of the watchers.
"Sheldon..." she screamed.
He ignored her and raised his phone, aiming in Pink's direction. He was grinning like a child taunting a wild animal. "Hold still freak, say cheese."
"Don't_" Sunshine screamed.
Sheldon did.
He tapped the camera button. It made a clicking sound and a bright flash was seen.
