Chapter 25: The endless struggle [1]
Emily glanced at the towering figures before them, her voice trembling. "What are these monsters?"
Zane fixed his cold gaze on the creatures, his tone unwavering. "They are temple guardians."
Each guardian was an embodiment of terror, unique in its form and menace.
The first was a colossus of blackened stone, its body etched with glowing crimson runes that pulsed like a sinister heartbeat. Its face was featureless, save for two fiery slits that burned where its eyes should have been, scanning the horizon with unblinking malice. Its limbs were impossibly long, each hand ending in claws sharp enough to cleave steel, and it moved with an unsettling grace, every step accompanied by the grinding sound of stone against stone.
The second was a creature born of sinew and shadows, its form cloaked in writhing darkness. Faces flickered in and out of its shifting mass—distorted, agonized visages that whispered unintelligible curses. Its head was crowned with jagged horns, and its sickly green eyes glowed with oozing malice. Wherever it stepped, the earth withered, leaving scorched and lifeless ground in its wake.
The Guardians' Purpose
Zane's voice carried the weight of ancient knowledge as he explained, "These guardians aren't just protectors. They are the will of the temple made flesh, bound to its ancient magic. They sense intent—friend or foe—with unnerving precision. And anyone who dares to disrupt the ritual will face their wrath."
James tightened his grip on his weapon, his voice steady despite the fear in his eyes. "How do we defeat them?"
"Their strength is immense," Zane replied. "As long as the temple's heart remains intact, they're unkillable. They'll rise again, over and over. To end them permanently, we have to destroy the heart."
Emily's voice trembled with frustration. "And where is this heart?"
Zane's gaze turned to the temple, his voice low but firm. "It's hidden deep within, beneath the altar where the rituals are performed. The entrance is concealed and protected by enchantments. Only someone who understands the temple's symbols can find it."
James pressed on, his tone resolute. "What about their weaknesses?"
Zane nodded slightly, his expression grim. "The stone guardian is slow. Its glowing runes channel its energy—shatter them, and you disrupt its power. The shadow guardian fears light and fire; use that, and you can weaken it enough to strike."
Yuri let out a sharp breath, her frustration spilling over. "This is ridiculous. We're running out of time."
Rose's voice cut through the tension, sharp and unyielding. "I'll go inside."
Zane turned to her, his expression dark. "It's too dangerous in there."
Rose met his gaze, her tone edged with defiance. "Do you think it's any safer out here?"
For a moment, Zane said nothing, his eyes locked on hers. Then he nodded, his voice calm but decisive. "Rose, Arthur, James, Emily—you're going inside. I, Cale, and Yuri will stay out here and distract the guardians."
Cale frowned, his voice brimming with frustration. "Why can't I go inside? I can bring Lily back!"
Zane's gaze turned cold as he replied, his words cutting. "Do you have the brains to navigate the traps?"
Cale stammered, "What—?"
Zane didn't wait for an answer. His tone turned commanding, dismissing Cale's protest. "Now go. We'll keep the guardians occupied. You find the heart and save Lily."
The weight of Zane's words hung in the air like a storm, and for a moment, there was silence. Then Rose stepped forward, her voice steady and determined. "Don't die out here."
Zane's lips curved into a faint smirk. "You too."
The temple loomed above them, its secrets buried within, waiting for the brave—or the foolish—to uncover them.
Both groups stood together under the pale, ominous glow of the full moon. The silence between them was suffocating, the weight of their impending separation pressing down on their chests like a leaden hand.
Then, without warning, Cale broke away. His footsteps pounded against the ground as he sprinted far from the temple, his figure quickly swallowed by the shadows. Raising his gun, he fired a single shot into the night. The sound cracked through the air like a thunderclap, shattering the stillness.
The stone guardian turned its faceless, glowing eyes toward the sound. It tilted its head, as if calculating, before it began to move, each colossal step making the ground tremble. Its massive claws scraped against the earth, leaving jagged scars in its wake.
Cale froze for a split second, his breath catching as the creature focused its attention on him. A shiver ran through his body, cold and unforgiving, but he forced himself to smirk. "Come on, you oversized rock," he muttered, his voice trembling despite his bravado.
Zane watched from a distance, his lips curling into a sharp smirk. "Look at that idiot," he muttered, his tone oddly amused. But there was no humor in his eyes—only the cold steel of someone who knew what needed to be done.
The shadow guardian remained still, its eerie, shifting form flickering in and out of focus. The distorted faces within it twisted and writhed, their silent screams enough to make anyone's blood run cold. It didn't move, as if waiting, watching, hunting.
Zane stepped forward, his boots crunching against the gravel, the sound unnervingly loud in the oppressive quiet. "Hey," he called out, his voice low and venomous, "you ugly little monster."
The shadow guardian's burning green eyes turned to him, and a sound like broken glass and static came from its jagged maw. "W-w-wha-t?" it rasped, the word distorted, its voice like a dying echo in a haunted place.
Zane didn't flinch. His gaze was steady, his smirk sharp as a blade. "Stop talking. You're wasting my time."
The creature let out a guttural growl and lunged toward him, its amorphous body stretching unnaturally. Zane didn't move, didn't blink, even as the shadow loomed over him.
Arthur, standing nearby, grabbed Yuri's hand, his grip firm but trembling. "You have to survive," he whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of his fear.
Yuri's lips curved into a bittersweet smile, her eyes glinting with determination even as her hand trembled in his. "Brother, I'm not weak. You know that. We're eight. Eight of us should stick together."
Rose's gaze flickered toward Zane, drawn by something she couldn't explain. For a fleeting moment, as the shadow guardian attacked, Zane looked back at her. And he smiled. Not his usual cold, mocking smile, but something different. Something real.
It made Rose's chest tighten, a wave of emotions crashing over her all at once—fear, admiration, sadness. She had never seen him smile like that before. It felt like a farewell.
Yuri turned to Rose, her voice quiet but fierce. "You must save Lily."
Rose's throat tightened, but she nodded. "I will. Take care of yourself."
Yuri grinned, though her eyes betrayed the fear she couldn't hide. "Don't make me come save you."
With that, Yuri turned and ran toward the monsters, her blade gleaming faintly in the moonlight. The shadows seemed to close in around her, swallowing her small figure as she disappeared into the chaos.
James placed a hand on Rose's shoulder, his usual cocky grin nowhere to be found. "Come on," he said, his voice rough. "We don't have time to waste."
Rose cast one last glance at Zane. His cold gaze met hers, and in that moment, she saw everything he couldn't say.
And then she ran, following James and Arthur into the gaping maw of the temple. The darkness inside was suffocating, swallowing their footsteps and their breaths. Behind them, the sounds of battle erupted—screams, growls, the clash of metal on stone.

The air was thick with tension, and the ground beneath their feet trembled as the massive stone guardian took its first step, each movement sending vibrations through the earth. Cale's heart pounded in his chest, the sound deafening in his ears as he stared up at the towering colossus, its glowing crimson runes pulsing like a malevolent heartbeat. The stone beast's eyes—if they could be called eyes—burned with an unholy fire, scanning the area for any sign of weakness.
Cale swallowed hard, his fingers tightening around his weapon. "Let's make this interesting," he muttered under his breath, his voice a mix of defiance and fear.
Beside him, Yuri was already adjusting her grip on her blade, her face set with steely determination. She was calm, but there was an edge to her demeanor, a quiet readiness that only came from facing the impossible. Her eyes flicked to Cale, her gaze locking onto his with an unspoken understanding.
Cale darted forward, his boots pounding against the cracked ground as he sprinted toward the guardian. His movements were fluid, swift, avoiding the massive claws that slashed at the space where he'd just been standing. He was a blur of motion, his figure barely visible as he zigzagged between the guardian's attacks, taunting it, keeping it off balance.
"Hey, big guy!" Cale yelled, his voice a taunt as he continued to sprint around the colossus, staying just out of reach of its enormous fists. The creature's eyes snapped to him, its head jerking sharply as it roared in frustration.
Yuri took a step back, watching Cale with an intense focus. She knew what he was doing—luring the guardian into a frenzy so she could strike. Her eyes narrowed, calculating her next move. She was waiting for the right moment, for Cale to create an opening she could exploit.
The guardian's colossal foot came down with a deafening crash, narrowly missing Cale by inches. He laughed, adrenaline coursing through his veins, and then he did something unexpected—he spun around and launched himself directly at the guardian's chest, narrowly avoiding a swipe of its claws.
"Now!" he yelled, his voice raw with urgency.
Yuri didn't hesitate. With a burst of speed, she leapt toward the stone giant's leg, her blade flashing through the air. She aimed for the cracks in the stone, where the glowing runes were weakest, and her strike landed with a resounding impact. The guardian's body shuddered as the runes flickered, a sharp hiss of energy escaping as the blade sank into the stone.
The guardian's roar was deafening as it recoiled, but before it could retaliate, Cale was already there, darting in once more. He jabbed at the runes, his weapon making sharp, quick strikes at the lines of glowing crimson, trying to crack the stone's protective shield. The guardian staggered back, but its regeneration began to work, the cracks sealing themselves as if nothing had happened.
"Shit," Cale muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. "It's not enough."
The guardian's body shuddered violently, its glowing runes flaring as if mocking their every attempt to break its stone armor. The cracks Yuri had made slowly began to mend, the stone twisting and knitting back together with a grotesque, unnatural sound—a deep, grinding crunch, like bones snapping back into place. The creature's green eyes gleamed with a hunger that seemed endless, and its movements became more erratic, as though it were no longer bound by the limitations of reason.
It was a nightmare, and it was only just beginning.
