Apocalypse Survival: Starting with a Shelter

Chapter 102: Chapter 102: The Morning Sisters

As the convoy arrived, Su Wu noticed two modified buses parked nearby.

The two drivers, unprotected by suits, sat nervously in the vehicles, scanning their surroundings.

These were the vehicles dispatched by Ye Luoshuanghua to help evacuate the residents.

Without engaging with the drivers, Su Wu directed three small excavators and two specialized transport vehicles to clear the rubble blocking the entrance, creating a pathway.

Meanwhile, reconnaissance drones that accompanied the convoy descended to about five or six meters above ground, broadcasting a focused network signal.

Instantly, hundreds of connectable signals from underground devices lit up on Su Wu's interface—primarily phones still holding a charge.

Using his AI assistant, Su Wu filtered the signals, quickly locating his target and initiating a call.

"Hello?"

A soft voice tinged with caution answered.

"This is Su Wu. I'm just outside your residential area. Would you consider joining my shelter?"

Having previously interacted with the person, Su Wu dispensed with formalities, cutting straight to the point.

"Eh?"

The girl let out a small sound of surprise, evidently caught off guard by his direct invitation.

She hesitated for a moment before asking cautiously, "Mr. Su, do you mean you want us to work in your shelter?"

"Exactly."

"You're all welcome."

Hearing the subtle concern in her tone, Su Wu reassured her with a straightforward promise.

He already knew she had a younger sister who was frail and sickly. Asking her to leave her sister behind and join alone would be both unreasonable and cruel.

After his assurance, Su Wu elaborated further, sensing that more context might help.

"Conditions outside are dire. The authorities have lost significant resources and can't fully support everyone. Even if I help you escape, you likely won't get the same treatment as before."

This wasn't a threat but rather a frank statement of reality.

Hearing this, the girl's tone remained calm, retaining a gentle softness reminiscent of a spring breeze.

"I understand, Mr. Su," she said after a brief pause.

Finally, as if steeling herself, she continued, "We'll rely on you from now on, Mr. Su."

Deep underground, within a hall of Residential Zone 023, an improvised air conditioning unit was valiantly running. Despite occasional shutdowns due to overheating, it managed to keep the space from becoming entirely uninhabitable.

Chen Xin ended the call, holding her phone in a daze.

Nearby, a few boys her age stole glances at her but quickly looked away whenever caught, their shyness evident.

Further away, a defiant-looking young man eyed her with thinly veiled desire. However, upon noticing the group of spirited boys hovering nearby, his interest waned, replaced by frustration.

For now, the overarching order imposed by the shelter authorities kept everyone in check. Even as daily conditions deteriorated, few dared challenge the fragile system.

"Big Sister."

A weak voice came from a girl huddled in the corner, drawing Chen Xin out of her thoughts.

Chen Xin knelt beside her younger sister, Chen Yue, holding her hand, her clear eyes shadowed with worry.

"Hold on a little longer. Someone's coming to rescue us soon."

"I'll be fine. Don't worry about me," Chen Yue replied with a faint smile before succumbing to restless sleep again.

Fifteen minutes later, noise erupted outside the hall.

Construction robots equipped with excavation tools cleared the rubble blocking the entrance, allowing the sweltering heat outside to seep into the hall.

"Are you the rescue team?"

Several people near the entrance stood, their eyes lighting up with hope.

"Yes, but please wait a moment. It'll take about 10 minutes to clear the path fully," Su Wu's voice, carried through the robot, reassured the crowd.

Turning his attention to the most striking figure in the hall, Su Wu immediately recognized Chen Xin from their prior interactions.

He directed one of the robots toward her.

"Are you Chen Xin?"

"Yes, Mr. Su," she replied, her clear gaze meeting the robot's camera as though trying to see the man behind the machine.

"The transport vehicles are ready outside. You and your sister will come with me."

The exchange drew envious glances from others in the hall.

It was clear the robots were here specifically for the Morning sisters.

In a post-apocalyptic world, this kind of attention from someone powerful represented one of the best opportunities for survival.
