Chapter 100: Chapter 100: System Update
As the rescue convoy worked on the outpost base transformation, three hours quietly passed since the earthquake ended.
Su Wu's apocalypse system completed its update, introducing an array of new features.
[Post-Apocalypse Survival System 1.0 Update Completed]
[New Feature: Disaster Parallelism]
Disaster Parallelism: While within the impact zone of a natural disaster, you will gain additional survival point income based on your daily fixed survival point baseline. The additional multiplier is dynamically influenced by factors such as personal safety, environmental danger level, proximity to the disaster's core, and the severity of the disaster. Current multiplier: 0.02 (0.08 survival points/hour).
[New Features: Mainline and Daily Task Panels]
Current Mainline Task: Echoes of a Prosperous Era (Completed).
Current Daily Task: Invite a member to permanently join your shelter. Reward: 5 survival points (1/5).
The updated survival system brought significant changes to Su Wu's interface.
Among the updates, the Disaster Parallelism feature stood out as the most significant change. It provided a new source of continuous survival point income, scaling with the environment's risks and conditions.
Even within the relative safety of the underground control center, Su Wu gained a 0.02 multiplier, amounting to 1.92 survival points per day. With higher-risk conditions, this income could increase exponentially.
"If only this feature had been available during the earthquake," Su Wu mused regretfully. "The multiplier would've been much higher."
He noted, however, that the personal safety factor might cap gains even in extreme conditions like the core of a nuclear explosion. Still, with many variables at play, the feature offered room for creative exploitation.
While Su Wu didn't plan on deliberately farming the multiplier, he was confident that future disasters would naturally present high-multiplier opportunities. After all, the system update hinted that the true apocalypse had only just begun.
"This is far too late," Su Wu muttered uneasily. "Almost all life on the surface is already gone—only now does the apocalypse truly begin?"
A heavy sense of unease gripped him as he considered the system's ominous implications. He began to wonder if the entire planet might one day be devoid of human life, save for himself.
The thought brought to mind the 2,000 lives now tied to his Green Lemon Shelter outpost. An intangible sense of responsibility settled upon him. If the world had no giants left to bear the weight of disaster, was he destined to become that lone pillar?
He recalled a term the system had once mentioned during a daily reward summary: "Human Destiny Community."
For the first time, Su Wu began to grasp its deeper meaning.
Beyond the Disaster Parallelism feature, the system added two task panels.
The Mainline Task was straightforward—static objectives with rewards, optional to complete. The Daily Tasks offered more flexibility. They refreshed randomly within 1–7 days and could be replaced if not accepted. Once accepted, they remained active until completed or manually abandoned. A maximum of five could exist at a time.
"None of these tasks are mandatory," Su Wu concluded, relieved. He could choose whether or not to engage with them, and failure carried no penalties. These tasks essentially provided new opportunities to earn survival points on his terms.
Satisfied with the rules, Su Wu examined the actual tasks.
The Mainline Task Echoes of a Prosperous Era was already completed. When he accepted it, the reward wasn't survival points but rather a physical item and a new talent.
[Reward: Bio-Assisted Computing Chip Set x1. Click to Claim.]
[Reward: Talent: Iron Will.]
Iron Will: You possess the ability to think calmly under crisis and maintain your original mindset even under the erosion of time.
Note: A gift from a bygone civilization to the future giant you will become.
At a thought, Su Wu materialized a small box made of an unknown material. Inside were 11 transparent chips, each the size of a fingernail.
According to the system, these were bio-assistive computing chips. Each chip could bind to one user, with the single golden-edged chip serving as the master chip, granting control over all others.
Once bound, the chips granted photographic memory and enhanced cognitive and research capabilities.
"This is overpowered," Su Wu murmured, staring at the chips.
After some thought, he picked up the golden-edged master chip and placed it on his forehead as instructed.
A brief prickling sensation followed.
In that instant, his thoughts became crystal-clear, his mind operating with an unprecedented level of sharpness. The sensation lasted a full ten minutes before gradually subsiding.
When it was over, the chip had successfully integrated.
Experimenting, Su Wu found the chip's interface remarkably intuitive, much like the tactical computer of his micro mech. However, unlike the mech's computer, the bio-chip was always accessible, albeit limited to controlling other chips and basic internal functions.
Among its commands was a particularly ominous one: self-destruct.
"Well, that's comforting," Su Wu muttered wryly, though he couldn't deny the potential power the chips offered.
With the system update complete, Su Wu turned his focus back to the broader challenges ahead. The new features and tools, while promising, also hinted at far greater dangers to come. For now, survival was his top priority—and if the system's message was to be believed, the real fight was only just beginning.
