Chapter 61: In-depth Investigation_1
Wen Yu glanced around the small room he was in and began tidying it up. His main task was to lay out the bedding. Then, he picked up the room key hanging by the door and left.
He quickly calculated the time. About seventy days had passed since the apocalypse began. This signified that in approximately one hundred days, the Demon Realm's Gate would open. Before that, Wen Yu had to ensure a significant increase in his power. He didn't need to reach the strength of a Level 6 professionist, but he absolutely had to achieve Level 5, and in his 5th Soul Realm, he had to form a pact with a divine beast species! Wen Yu greatly coveted the power of a divine beast species!
"So, I must make the most of my time!" Wen Yu murmured with a soft sigh, then locked the door behind him. This place would be his home for the near future.
Cyclops rapidly grew larger, assuming his battle form. With Star floating above his head, Wen Yu leaped onto Cyclops's head, and they headed quickly toward the city outskirts. Three Level 4 Demon Fiends... Wen Yu alone was more than enough to handle them!
Watching Wen Yu ride away on the large dog, Lin Haifeng, standing in the castle, sighed softly. Fang Wenhai, beside him, looked somewhat dissatisfied.
"Commander Lin, I still believe it would be better for Wen Yu to move with the main contingent."
Hearing Fang Wenhai's words, Lin Haifeng shook his head slightly. "You don't understand. You've been here this whole time, so you don't realize his true power."
Fang Wenhai raised an eyebrow. "Sequence Number 2, perhaps a bit stronger than Kuangliu. But even if he is stronger than Kuangliu, facing an overwhelming Demon Group, he'd just be food for them!"
From Fang Wenhai's education and experience, the outcome of a war was never decided by a single individual.
Lin Haifeng shook his head again, sighing as he spoke. "Just watch. In this new world, individuals with supreme personal strength are the ones who decide the fate of a war! The world has changed, and the mode of warfare has changed too..."
Fang Wenhai expressionlessly watched the receding Cyclops, his thoughts unknown.
Cyclops was fast. He took less than three minutes to leave the small city.
As far as the eye could see, there was only desolate, yellow sand.
Seeing this, Wen Yu frowned. The battlefield environment in the treasure land was quite good: there were no obstructions, and the terrain was relatively flat. Unfortunately, the uniform terrain made distinguishing directions extremely difficult.
Of course, for Wen Yu, these were minor issues.
He directed Cyclops to race forward, while Star occasionally flew up to discern their direction. Beasts had a far better sense of direction than humans, to say nothing of Level 4 mutant beasts and Level 4 divine beast species.
Under these circumstances, Wen Yu advanced rapidly with his two soul pets.
His only target—the Demon City!
They hadn't traveled for ten minutes when several small green dots appeared in Wen Yu's line of sight. His exceptional eyesight allowed him to roughly identify the dots as soldiers belonging to the military.
After a brief thought, Wen Yu commanded Cyclops, "Catch up with them."
The soldiers on the other side naturally didn't possess Wen Yu's eyesight. They only spotted Cyclops's figure when the distance between them had closed by about half.
At first, a slight commotion arose among the soldiers. After all, mutant beasts were not allowed in the treasure land. Seeing the blurry creature, nearly ten meters tall, approaching from afar, they knew it couldn't possibly be a human; it could only be a Demon Fiend!
The commotion didn't last long, however. As Cyclops rapidly approached, the soldiers opposite them identified his species—a dog!
There could only be one explanation for a mutant beast appearing in the treasure land!
Wen Yu pondered for a moment on Cyclops's head while watching the soldiers salute him, then hopped down.
"What are your orders?"
"We are scouts from the military's Special Ops Team! We've just received intelligence on the Demon Fiends and are preparing to return to our stronghold!"
Wen Yu nodded. "What intelligence?"
The soldiers hesitated for a moment but still relayed the information. After all, the entrance to this treasure land was strictly controlled by the military, making it difficult for outsiders to enter or leave. Even though none of them had seen this powerful expert before, his presence here meant he was one of them, on their side.
"The number of Demon Fiends in the Demon City has further increased, and a new Level 4 Demon Fiend has appeared. An hour ago, Demon Fiends began to leave the city in units, possibly searching for our position. Personnel at the front line have already partially withdrawn."
Hearing this, Wen Yu nodded slightly. These soldiers were highly professional. Relaying the situation from the Demon City here in just an hour suggested they likely had special means of communication.
Wen Yu didn't press for details. He briefly scanned the men, then pointed casually. "You, come with me. I need you to relay intelligence. The rest of you, return and report that Wen Yu took him. I'll do my best to ensure his safety!"
"Yes, Chief!"
The soldiers showed no hesitation and immediately chose to obey Wen Yu's instructions.
The soldier Wen Yu had pointed to mounted Cyclops's back and sat properly. Wen Yu also remounted, nodded to the remaining men, and directed Cyclops to continue forward.
When the other soldiers were out of sight, Wen Yu glanced at the soldier seated behind him. He looked young, under twenty, with some fine fuzz still on his upper lip. In his army uniform, he looked quite spirited. His Mid-Strength of Level 3 would be considered fodder by Wen Yu, but in the army, he was definitely an elite.
Wen Yu nodded to the somewhat anxious professionist behind him and then asked, "What's your name?"
Hearing Wen Yu, the young soldier immediately stood up, gave an extremely standard military salute, and said loudly, "Reporting, Chief! My name is Zhao Mingming, attached to..."
Wen Yu waved his hand, cutting Zhao Mingming off. "No need for all that. Your mission is to follow me and act as my living map and communications liaison."
"Yes, Chief."
His attitude was excellent; military training was clearly effective.
"By the way, are you afraid of dying?" Wen Yu asked, turning his head after about three minutes of silence.
"No, Chief!"
"Mm."
Wen Yu fell silent for a moment, then looked at Zhao Mingming's resolute face and slowly said, "I'll do my best to ensure you survive. But in a moment, you'll still need to be sharp yourself."
