Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 93: The Decision

Time seemed to stand still, and the wolves suddenly halted.

One wolf opened its mouth to softly call out, then the pack quickly retreated, leaving behind a wolf corpse, disappearing without looking back, as if they had been frightened by Lu Xi'an.

But Lu Xi'an knew very well that it wasn't his deterrence at play; it was the ability of that Neo-Human.

At the moment the gunfire sounded, not only did he come to his senses, but the wolf pack also snapped out of it.

These wolves must have sensed something strange about themselves, and fear crept in, hence at the leader wolf's call, the pack retreated in unison.

Lu Xi'an let out a sigh of relief.

If there were only one or two wolves, he would have no problem dealing with them.

But with so many surrounding him from all sides, and with such organization, even if he wasn't bitten to death by the pack, he couldn't guarantee he'd come out unscathed.

With limited tools and scarce medicine, getting injured in this world was not an easy thing to deal with.

"Break his limbs; I have some questions for him."

Lu Xi'an sneaked around to Yao Wei, whispering to her.

His gaze swept past the unidentified trees at the forest's edge, landing on the ground in the woods.

The person hiding amidst the forest grass finally emerged; it was the one previously spotted by Gou's eyes and then hit by Yao Wei's shot, now finally caught in Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei's sights.

Lu Xi'an had excellent eyesight and could clearly see grass wrapped around the person's body and head.

No wonder Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei hadn't been able to spot him, and even Gou and the drone found it a bit challenging—they had camouflaged themselves.

If someone deliberately disguised themselves like this, and they were a Neo-Human able to hold their breath, others really wouldn't easily spot them.

Now, this person had exposed themselves while controlling the wolf pack and was caught and injured by Gou and Yao Wei.

Now that he had revealed himself, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei would not give him a chance to hide again and play any tricks.

Yao Wei nodded and was about to fire.

Although she was frugal, she knew how to prioritize, and at such a critical moment, she definitely wouldn't risk her life.

However, she couldn't manage to pull the trigger in time and suddenly felt a wave of apathy, unwilling to shoot.

Lu Xi'an felt the same, in an instant, wanting to do nothing but return to the car, pull up a blanket, and take a nap.

When they snapped back to themselves, they saw the person getting up off the ground, stumbling away into the distance.

It turned out the intervals between emotional controls needn't be long, and indeed this Neo-Human only dared to play such tricks, not daring to confront head-on.

"Kill him!"

Lu Xi'an abandoned the idea of trying to communicate with the Neo-Human and immediately said.

Yao Wei, too, was decisive, firing immediately before the next control set in.

"Bang!"

The bullet shot out, piercing straight through the Neo-Human's back of the head.

The man's head blew open, "thud" he fell forward.

Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei rushed up, seeing the man lying motionless, still wary.

Lu Xi'an stabbed several times at the neck and heart, finally relaxing, while Yao Wei, not content, severed the man's head.

"I'm afraid he might be like Luo Ping..."

After tossing the head far away, Yao Wei said this. Her handling was excellent, not a drop of blood splattered on her.

"He shouldn't be; he's not the same type..."

Lu Xi'an glanced at the pale head that had rolled far away, his lips twitching, but still said, "Still, it's fine to be cautious, no big mistake in that. It's just a pity we can't ask him about Fungus Stones and Neo-Human matters anymore."

But they had no choice; the person's ability was strange enough to completely control others.

If they had refrained from striking hard and allowed him to control them bit by bit, until he escaped, he and Yao Wei might have faced his ambush again sometime.

The rolling head was smooth, the hair dense but close to the scalp, looking a bit odd.

Although the body was taller than an ordinary person, it was shorter compared to other Neo-Humans Lu Xi'an had seen.

Even dead, Lu Xi'an had a lingering feeling that if this person had escaped, they wouldn't let it rest, inevitably sticking like a piece of plaster.

So better to kill him quickly.

"Hmm."

Yao Wei nodded, went over, and picked up the Fungus Stone that Lu Xi'an had previously dropped on the ground.

Lu Xi'an meanwhile rummaged through the dead Neo-Human, trying to see if he carried anything useful.

—It was very important. Killing without looting, wouldn't that make the kill meaningless? Such a waste!

This person could have found them using that resonator instrument; having come here to ambush, it might have been carried on him.

Lu Xi'an searched carefully, and indeed found a few items.

The blade at his waist was an obvious find; on his back was a repeating short crossbow, with only three matching bolts, but they were brand new, apparently hardly used.

Luckily, it wasn't often used.

Lu Xi'an guessed that like him, the man had poor aim and considered the crossbow bolts as a last-resort lifeline, reluctant to use.

If paired with his ability to ambush, it might have been more effective than the wolf pack.

He confiscated the blade and the crossbow; these items would be new trump cards for him now.

But after thinking it over, he handed the crossbow to Yao Wei, saying, "Try this; it fires faster than a bow, and with luck, the bolts can be reused, allowing us to save some bullets."

He still lacked confidence in his marksmanship. Of course, he also planned to practice with the weapon a bit more when there was time.

The practice bolts could be homemade or use these three, unlike gun bullets which were hard to replenish.

"Hmm."

Yao Wei's eyes lit up as she took it, thinking that if it could be reused, it was worth learning how to use and practice properly.

Meanwhile, Lu Xi'an was examining other items found on the person.

The rest were packed in a not-so-large backpack, with four grass cakes, likely gotten from the people in Mengxin City, six pieces of compressed biscuits, and a bag of expired bread, appearing to be his supply.

In this way, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei's rations were replenished, which was relieving when it was too cold to make a fire.

Both of them were quite satisfied with this.

The other items included a pen and a book. As for the resonator instrument, neither Lu Xi'an nor Yao Wei found it.

The pen was put away first.

The book's cover was already tattered and curled, and the inside pages were similarly creased, incredibly aged.

The cover was blue, without any frills like Luo Ping's books, with only a single line of text:

X-17 Strain Plan Practical Manual.
