Chapter 88: So It Was All a Misunderstanding
The two people, a man and a woman, had withered yellow hair and deeply set eyes. Though they seemed middle-aged, their faces were already full of crevices.
The man was balding, with unruly hair hanging around his head like a fake waterfall from a TVB drama.
He gripped a long wooden pole, its tip sharp, carved down like a spear.
A blade was strapped to his back, with the tip showing at his right waist loop, already slightly bent, but the man seemed unwilling to discard it.
The woman held a bow in her hand, with a quiver slung over her back. Yet she hadn't drawn her bowstring, instead holding a short knife, which seemed to be her weapon of choice.
"Watch out for what's in their hands; that spear looks like it's for throwing."
Lu Xi'an speculated in his heart and cautioned Yao Wei atop the car.
"Got it."
Yao Wei responded, having already nocked an arrow to her bow, aiming beyond the road.
She had another arrow clasped between her fingers in reserve, ensuring that once the first arrow was loosed, the second could quickly be nocked.
However, she was only poised to strike.
Yao Wei didn't intend to initiate an attack.
If those two didn't intend to make a move, she and Lu Xi'an wouldn't mind just putting on a show, turning a corner ahead and driving away.
But if those two intended to attack, she didn't mind sending them to their deaths.
The two heard the car's sound, subsequently spotting Yao Wei on the car roof.
The man raised his spear, while the woman put her short knife into her mouth, biting onto it, then also readied her bow, nocking an arrow, but neither attacked.
Until Lu Xi'an drove to the end of the road and turned.
"Woosh—"
The woman's fingers released the bowstring instantly, sending the arrow towards the car wheels.
Her target was so precise, aiming at the car's weakest part.
However, her aim wasn't good; as soon as she released it, both Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei could tell the arrow could only eat the car's exhaust, with no hope of hitting the tire.
Her aim might have been off, but the man was quite skilled.
The moment the woman shot the arrow, the man stretched his body, took a large step forward, twisted his waist, and fiercely flung the spear in his hand.
"Whoosh—"
The whistle of the spear cutting through the air was so clear, heading straight for the rear wheel.
Lu Xi'an squinted, looking through the rearview mirror, seeing an arrow already speeding towards the woman as Yao Wei leaped down from the car roof, appearing in the mirror.
The bow and arrows should have remained on the roof, as Yao Wei hadn't brought them down. She unsheathed the dagger she carried, landing right where the spear came from.
"Crack—"
The dagger accurately split the spear, breaking it in half as it descended.
The spear tip flicked up but lost its forward momentum, dropping to the ground.
"Bang—"
Lu Xi'an hit the brakes, and a gunshot rang out.
Yao Wei's movements didn't pause; after steadying herself, she drew her gun and fired, clean and decisive, without any hesitation.
When he looked out the car window, the woman in the grass had already been hit by an arrow, and the man was also down with a bullet wound, lying on the ground.
"Gou!"
Lu Xi'an commanded, then switched on the drone.
The mechanical dog controlled the drone to ascend and scout quickly, only then did Lu Xi'an feel assured. He opened the door, got out, and said to Yao Wei, "There are only these two, no one else."
"Yeah."
Yao Wei nodded, gripping the knife as she walked into the grass, talking to Lu Xi'an as she went, "You tidy up the bow and arrows, they're on the roof."
Lu Xi'an helplessly had to jump onto the roof to gather the bow and arrows Yao Wei left behind, before drawing his blade to follow her into the grass off the road.
During this time, he constantly had Gou control the drone overhead, maintaining vigilance. Should the drone detect anything, Gou could instantly alert them, prompting a return to the car.
Quickly reaching the man and woman in the grass, Lu Xi'an found both lying on the ground, but still breathing.
The woman was wounded in the chest, bleeding and powerless, with a large cut at the corner of her mouth from the short knife she had bitten, injuring herself after being hit by the arrow.
The short knife was double-edged; who else would suffer but her for biting it?
The man, however, was shot in the eye, writhing in agony in the grass, bleeding profusely.
"You actually spared them, that's rare."
Lu Xi'an remarked. He couldn't believe that with Yao Wei's accuracy, she could have missed, even in high-speed action.
He had witnessed Yao Wei's marksmanship multiple times; missing was impossible.
Yao Wei said nothing, only glancing at the woman beside her.
Following Yao Wei's gaze, Lu Xi'an finally noticed the arrow quiver beside the woman, looking so familiar.
—If it wasn't Chai Xin's, whose was it?!
Yet he remained composed, asking, "Why did you attack us?"
He still contemplated issuing a threat, suggesting they choose a quick death over enduring torment.
As for surviving, that was impossible, something these two likely didn't believe either.
However, before he spoke, the woman struggled to sit up, panting heavily, saying, "I'll tell you, you... give me a quick death."
She seemed to understand the situation without Lu Xi'an reminding her.
Lu Xi'an nodded, saying, "Alright, speak."
"Pant... pant..."
The woman took several deep breaths, the arrow wound in her chest greatly affecting her.
She paused to calm her breathing before speaking, "We came here previously, looking for someone, on that road... spotted the car's tracks.
"The car that ran over the wolves, I don't know if it's yours… probably not.
"That car couldn't even deal with the wolf pack, you can tell from the tracks on the road, that car would flee at the sight of wolves, clearly not Neo-Humans.
"You should know the person we're looking for isn't a Neo-Human either, yet could scare off a wolf pack alone. How could Neo-Humans be worse than her?"
Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei said nothing.
What this woman was saying was clear—she was looking for Chai Xin.
And it was undoubtedly this woman, or this group, that laid stones on the ground to block their path before.
As for arguing who was more formidable or if they wanted to fight, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei found it unnecessary.
Understanding the situation was the priority.
They listened as the woman continued, "We previously concluded that the car would return to collect bodies after the wolf pack dispersed, so we scattered things on the ground, aiming to puncture the tires and seize the car.
"But unexpectedly, the weather suddenly turned cold, and we had to leave.
"Then the items on the road vanished, and we thought it was hopeless, but seeing you arrive now, we assumed you were that car, so excited we attacked.
"Who would've thought... heh, it was a misunderstanding..."
