Chapter 259: Foraging by the Sea
After watching Hu Xiaodong and Hu Dong sail away, Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei quickly returned to the mountain top.
Compared to other places, staying near the car made them feel the most at ease.
Gou and the camper were their biggest assets now, and they didn't want anything to happen to the car.
So even though they had been on the mountain for a few days and hadn't discovered any danger, they still preferred not to stray far from the car.
They were fast, and upon reaching the top, they could still see Hu Xiaodong, Hu Dong, and their boat in the distance.
However, the boat was already far away, just a tiny speck in their sight.
The sky was gradually brightening, and the sunrise appeared again. The man and the boat seemed to be in the middle of the sun, sails blowing in the wind, heading toward the dawn — a scene in Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei's eyes.
"Today's sunrise seems even more beautiful than yesterday's."
Lu Xi'an couldn't help but express his thoughts.
"Yes."
Yao Wei nodded in agreement and then asked, "Will they come back?"
"They should—if they can make it in time."
Lu Xi'an replied, "They weren't even willing to give up the water here and risked rowing with barrels to fetch it. Now, with the temptation of the Big Coin, how could they give up?
"But even if they don't come or can't come, it doesn't matter. We haven't given up much, just an unusable tiger skin and two nails."
Also, there was one night's labor, but Lu Xi'an enjoyed doing it himself and felt a sense of accomplishment. Considering it free for those two was no problem.
"Yes."
Yao Wei nodded once more.
The two men and the boat seemed to have sailed into the dawn, disappearing entirely from Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei's sight.
Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei stopped looking out to sea and, facing the dawn, completed their morning exercise, then washed up and had a simple meal.
Making the sail yesterday had used a lot of water. After washing up and eating, the two of them carried buckets to the mountain's mid-level pool, fetched water, filled the water tank, and then refilled the buckets.
With nothing else to do, they cleared the extinguished firewood piles outside and returned to the car, put the window covers on, and went to bed to rest.
The window covers made the RV completely dark, without letting in any light. With them up, it was like nighttime inside, making sleeping during the day no problem.
Hmm...
This should be called catching up on sleep.
After all, they "worked overtime" last night.
Even though, with their physical condition, they didn't really need to catch up on sleep.
And so they slept for a whole day and night, only waking up to another sunrise over the sea.
Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei glanced at the ocean; it was indeed as Hu Xiaodong said: during the tide, the sea was calm and without danger.
By that logic, the water level shouldn't rise any further.
Lu Xi'an suddenly thought of something and turned to Yao Wei, saying, "Since we're idle, why not go explore the sea today?"
"Explore the sea?"
Yao Wei didn't immediately understand the term.
Lu Xi'an chuckled, "Well... it might not exactly be exploring, as this isn't a typical coast. To get something, we have to fish and catch turtles in the sea.
"Didn't Hu Xiaodong say so? The sea has been calm these days, so we might as well go to the shore and see if we can gather some seafood.
"If we manage, we'll have seafood to eat."
Yao Wei, hearing they could get food, was tempted but still hesitated and asked, "What about the car?"
Lu Xi'an replied, "We'll drive the car down, but to be safe, we won't park it at the beach.
"We'll stop where we can manage, turn it around, so if there's trouble, we can leave quickly."
Hearing this, Yao Wei had no objections, nodded, and said, "Okay."
The two decided, finished their morning exercise on the mountain top, then washed up, made a simple meal, ate till they were half full.
The reason for eating half was to save room for the seafood feast later.
Still, whether they could successfully gather seafood and catch something remained to be seen.
After all, neither of them were professionals.
Some water was used from the bucket, and they deliberately used a fair amount from the water tank. The rest of the half bucket was poured into the tank to free up a bucket for the sea excursion.
Then they drove the car down to a spot some distance from the sea, avoiding the hassle of turning it around and simply got out to physically reposition it.
For Type A Neo-Humans like them, this way of turning the car was much easier than reversing and driving forward while steering.
Once the car was turned and parked, Lu Xi'an picked up the empty bucket, and he and Yao Wei walked to the shore.
They didn't go to where Hu Xiaodong's boat had been. That coastal area was relatively narrow, with rocks and woods on either side limiting visibility.
Instead, they went to the south where it was relatively flat and wide, with a road leading straight into the sea, merging with the surrounding slopes, converging with the sea.
Coming here also allowed them to run and rehearse the route they might take later.
But to their surprise, upon reaching the area, they found something unexpectedly rewarding—
"There are birds over there!"
They had just left the car and hadn't reached the shore when Yao Wei pointed it out.
Lu Xi'an nodded, "Yes, I heard them too."
Now, even if their "sea exploration" failed, they could at least catch some birds, ensuring the trip wasn't in vain.
Having focused only on the east before, they hadn't noticed there were birds here.
Seabirds, perhaps?
During the tide, as they drove up, there hadn't been any bird sounds.
Quickening their pace, they soon saw the sea and shore, then blinked in surprise.
The previously empty eastern narrow coast had nothing, but here they saw turtles scattered along the shore and, upon closer look, shells, crabs, and fish and shrimp remains.
Those fish and shrimp remains were fresh, recently left as remains. Seeing a white seabird in the distance pecking at a fish, they realized these leftovers were likely from the seabirds.
There were a dozen or so seabirds, some circling above, some lingering near the turtle group, and others eating fish, all part of this tide-time feast.
Lu Xi'an and Yao Wei, seeing all this, were delighted.
Who would've thought such surprises awaited them here?
Could it be that the resources scarce on land were all replenished in the sea?
Now that they'd reached the coast, they were welcomed with such a gastronomical feast!
