Apocalypse: Last Traveler

Chapter 155: Lying

Yao Wei handed over the removed bicycle wheel spokes, pedals, cranks, and brake levers to Lu Xi'an, and Lu Xi'an placed them back on the bike.

After putting them back, he turned around and saw Yao Wei starting to dismantle the game console box.

This was the only box that Lu Xi'an hadn't opened.

Having a game console without the means to use it made Lu Xi'an not even want to look at it, so he instinctively avoided it, not opening the box.

However, since Yao Wei wanted to open it, Lu Xi'an did not stop her.

Who knows, maybe Yao Wei might discover something useful in it?

The moonlight was quite bright tonight, so Yao Wei and Lu Xi'an didn't need to use the mechanical dog for illumination to see the contents of the box.

After opening the box, the contents were exactly as pictured on the box, indeed a game console.

It was a black blocky design, simple and elegant, about the size and shape of their laptop, but significantly thicker.

This block was embedded in a styrofoam board with three grooves, two larger ones and one smaller one.

In the larger ones, there was a controller each, a classic dual joystick style, seemingly wireless.

The smaller one contained a signal output cable, a power cable, and a data cable, which might also be a charging cable for the controllers.

Lu Xi'an wondered if the power cable could be used for the laptop? The other two cables might come in handy too.

As for the black and white controllers, they might just be toys to fiddle with or be used as hidden weapons.

However, what surprised him were the two items laid flat on top of the black block.

Both items were rectangular boxes wrapped in transparent plastic film, with printed paper inside.

One paper depicted a magnificent planet, with two people—a man and a woman—posed exaggeratedly with expressive faces.

Both held gun-like weapons, aimed towards a spot saying "Interstellar Companions."

The other paper appeared to show a fierce dragon with black scales and horns on its head, brimming with tension and looking formidable and sinister.

It also had a line of text that read "Desolate Century."

Yao Wei took out the box labeled "Interstellar Companions," removed the plastic film, and opened it to find it spotlessly clean, containing only a disc.

Undoubtedly, it was a game disc. The other box likely contained the same thing.

It seemed that the former owner of this area did special research when choosing a birthday gift for their child, accompanying the machine with game discs.

Moreover, one of them seemed to be a two-player game, and looking at the two controllers prepared in the game console box, was the area's previous owner planning to find some joy during tough times in the midst of disaster by playing games with their child?

Yao Wei took out the two controllers and the power cable, placed them on the game console, then took the console along with the disc boxes, signal cable, and power cable out of the styrofoam.

Lu Xi'an asked, "Why are you taking that device? It can't be used, and it takes up space, it's enough to just take what's left.

"The three cables can serve as ropes, but is the power cable compatible with the laptop's specifications? It might be worth trying it on the laptop.

"And the remaining controllers and discs seem usable as hidden weapons. Just keep these, don't take the machine."

Yao Wei shook her head, saying, "Let's not use these as hidden weapons anymore. We've already collected so many hidden weapons, these few won't make a difference."

"True…"

Lu Xi'an asked, "Then what are you taking these for?"

"Just keeping them for now."

Yao Wei replied, "I noticed how much you liked this, and it seems a shame to throw it away, right? We might find a use for it later."

After she finished speaking, feeling that this explanation might not convince Lu Xi'an to keep them, she added, "I've never seen you like something so much.

"When you looked at it from upstairs before, you were already planning to give it up, and you seemed quite reluctant, I could see it.

"If I came across something I liked a lot, I'd probably try to keep it too, regardless of its usefulness."

Lu Xi'an was momentarily stunned.

After a while, he shook his head with a laugh and said to Yao Wei, "You're lying."

Why would Yao Wei worry over something useless?

What is something useless but beloved? To Yao Wei, no such thing would exist.

Lu Xi'an felt as if a warm spring breeze brushed through his heart, dispelling the night's chill.

Yao Wei wasn't being arrogant, she just nodded calmly, as if telling a couple of lies was the most ordinary thing.

Even when caught, it didn't matter, her composure took Lu Xi'an by surprise.

Then she ignored Lu Xi'an, carried the game console onto the vehicle, and tucked the items away.

She stuffed the data cables, signal cables, and game discs into her backpack, while the power cable was placed on the front seat to test on the laptop later.

Lu Xi'an didn't stop Yao Wei, allowing her to handle things her way, while he picked up the stack of old photographs from the previous park owner and returned to the room.

The moonlight outside was bright, shining through the window, illuminating the room enough not to affect visibility.

He jumped to the dark niche in the west room, placed the photos on the roof, and pulled down the niche's door.

Dust scattered. Lu Xi'an held his breath, waiting for a moment until the dust settled, before glancing up, seeing the niche's door fit snugly against the ceiling, then turned and walked out.

Yao Wei was done tidying up, and seeing Lu Xi'an enter then exit, she asked, "What did you do?"

Lu Xi'an said, "I put back the family's photos above, and covered the niche as well.

"Those photos probably hold the last memories of their family in this world, so it's best to return them to their hiding place."

"Hmm."

Yao Wei nodded, glanced at the scattered bicycle parts on the floor, and asked, "What about these? Should we put them up too?"

"..."

Lu Xi'an's mouth twitched, saying, "Just leave them, they're already like this..."

"Mm."

Yao Wei nodded again, and together with Lu Xi'an, returned to the vehicle.

Only then did they carefully examine the game console's power cable specifications, realizing it was a round hole, incompatible with the laptop, so they gave up.

It seemed the laptop would have to rely on sunlight, its destined fate perhaps.

Yao Wei put away the power cable, placing it back in her backpack, along with the data cable and video signal cable.
