Chapter 280: Returning Home - The Hive
"Are you sure you won't come with me?" I asked while stroking Tang Wei's damp hair, the sweat from our 'enjoyment' still dripping down her cheeks. The moment we started, it became impossible to stop, and the day vanished before I noticed.
She nuzzled my palm with a low hum.
"I'll wait here, since I hogged you all day... the others might be angry."
After sex, Tang Wei's voice always became sweeter; she would fiddle with my fingers and curl against my chest just like any other woman.
I enjoyed this moment of quiet, stroking her old wounds and scars, listening to her stories and things she cared about. Then it got to this moment, near the end, before she fell asleep, because it was when Tang Wei became the most honest and cute.
"You're too nice, Wei Wei."
"Nn... stop curling my hair, it'll get messy."
"What, have you not seen yourself?"
Tang Wei's hair became messy from the heat and moisture in the air, not to mention I couldn't help playing with it during sex. Thus, it became a fuzzy mess, nothing like the usually neat and tidy Wei Wei.
"Why, what the hell have you done to my hair!?"
"Nothing...."
Wei Wei glared at me with her sharp eyes, making it difficult to avoid them; she pouted while spreading her fingers across my chest, squeezing and pinching my muscles.
"Idiot."
"Yes, yes, I am an idiot."
Smack.
A tingle spread through my spine as she kissed my chest, her glossy lips a little sticky to the touch, but the warmth that spread across my neck felt good.
I looked down as she peeked up like a fussy cat pulling a face before she sniffed me and brushed her lips across my skin. "You should go, aren't you leaving tomorrow?" Her low voice sounded more like a lioness growling than a human voice.
"Won't you be lonely and cry?"
Thud!
Wei Wei tried to punch me, but I caught her wrist and pushed her down and rolled over. Now lying on her back, she looked up at me with frustrated eyes.
"I won't cry! Who would cry!?"
"Are you sure?"
My fingers slipped along her skin the moment I finally touched her.
She quivered and bit her lower lip with a cute expression.
"I'm sure... I will wait for you," she touched my cheek, rubbing along the faint scar on my cheek with her fingertips. "I hope you'll take care of my family, but don't take too long, and you must return to me."
"Haha."
Though she frowned at my laugh, I couldn't help it. Tang Wei always used to act so tough, as if she were a piece of titanium. Yet she melted with a simple touch or kiss closer to chocolate than metal.
"I promise to come back, after I've made sure your family and everyone are okay, let's plan for the future..." My hand swept across her stomach with a faint smile. I noticed something different in Tang Wei after the horde, and I believe that when she mentioned a child, it must be something she'd deeply wanted for a long time.
And I wouldn't deny her.
"Good....." Tang Wei's voice became quiet, softer than silk as she fell into a shallow sleep. I stroked her hair gently, waiting for her to fall deeper and deeper so she might not wake until after I had already gone.
Warmth lingered in the room when she finally entered a deep sleep, my arm slightly numb as I slipped off the bed and closed the curtains. I lit a lavender diffuser to help remove the thick scent of sex and sweat, which would be horrible to wake up to, and after cleaning her clothes and other mess off the floor.
I left the room with a slight sigh, curling my lips into a smile.
Tang Wei is my ideal woman.
Strong, sexy, faithful and great in bed.
However, now I would be leaving her in this cold fortress, the thought alone a little irritating.
"Well, I should meet up with everyone else..."
Despite the promise to meet a few hours earlier, I couldn't just leave Tang Wei while recovering from our violent and passionate moment together. If I did that to the others, they would also be upset, and so I hoped they understood.

At this time, the canteen wasn't so busy, because the battle had ended, and the base only used the minimal needed members to allow people to recover and heal from the horror they had faced the other night.
A smile, scent of tomatoes, beef and mint lingered in the air.
Late at night, the meal becomes one choice.
Pasta or sometimes Rice.
"You're finally here? O-Oi... what are all those marks!?" Shen Yifei tapped the seat beside her. She made a noise at the kiss marks that Wei Wei left on me before she fell asleep as if marking her territory.
"Wei Wei gets a little passionate after it ends."
"H-Hmph! You damn playboy!"
"Leave it be Wei-Wei, if it was your kiss marks you'd be prancing around like some kind of victor in a war." Jiang Roulan giggled at the younger woman's open jealousy. "But you're right look at how dark they are, she must've been quite lovely."
I didn't plan to make them fight or play favourites, and so always told the truth when the girls asked me things like this.
"Yeah, she was lovely. Very Lovely."
"Hmmmm, I see."
"Tch!"
Roulan and Yifei always liked to tease or support each other; sometimes, it felt close to a sisterly bond. Qinglan, however, wrapped her pasta in a fork and slurped it up like a beast, her blue eyes sparkling...
I guess it's delicious tonight.
Thanks to the purchase of higher levels of cooking skill for most of the people who worked in the kitchen, the soldiers' morale almost exploded when tasting the new food. Imagine eating cheap and barely edible slop, and then suddenly it's like a three- or four-star restaurant dish.
"Li Ya, are you still alright following us to the base? Don't you consider this place home?"
"Well..." Her vibrant red hair bounced as she turned to face me, tied in a high, side ponytail, which added an air of youth to her appearance. "I wanted to check something along the way, is that alright?" She looked at me with a tentative glance.
"Sure, as long as it's nothing dangerous or too far. I don't mind."
"Pushover..." Li Ya huffed, looking away from me while rolling her fork in the pasta.
I ignored her comment, sat beside Yifei and looked into the dark yard, "There are fewer lights on tonight. Is there an electricity issue?" The nights before, the compound shone bright, but now only the surroundings outside the wall remained lit up.
"Well, it might be to save electricity and fuel for the generators..." A mature, womanly voice sounded from my left as Jiang Siwan carried a small tray of noodles and a sweet and sour scented sauce. "It's because the troops need rest, and my father thought it would help them sleep for longer periods."
"I see..."
We sat around the table engaging in small talk while enjoying the delicious pasta and noodles, before Jiang Siwan's face changed slightly, her lips pursed, and her eyes narrowed.
"My father has allowed me to leave, but we cannot take the jeeps for too long."
"Oh? We managed to get permission?"
"Yes, but don't forget that this base isn't quite safe.... so I hope that the mission won't take longer than a month at most." Jiang Siwan tapped the tablet she took from her breast pocket and then opened a map. "This is the current state of the central and southern districts that our scouts have mapped."
Many of the roads and buildings collapsed, and the direct route passed through an area marked with a dark red 'Danger' spot.
The map glowed faintly in the dim canteen light, every red blotch like a bleeding wound across the city. Buildings flattened into rubble. Highways swallowed by cracks. And there, in the centre of it all, that jagged mark of danger.
"What kind of danger?" I asked, tracing the crimson stain with my finger.
Siwan's gaze hardened. "The scouts described it as a nest. Not just ordinary zombies shambling around, but... something gathered them there, and they felt a sense of fear just watching the area."
Li Ya leaned forward, brows furrowed. "You mean like a bee hive?"
"Rather, we have decided to call places and this phenomenon "hives" in the future for simplification and they are designated a danger level one below an active horde."
I could feel the doubt growing within the group... a hive sounded dangerous.
Qinglan finally set down her fork, the clatter sharp in the silence. Her blue eyes glimmered with a strange light. "Then we go through it, and destroy it to make a path..."
The quiet table shook; even Yifei flinched at Qinglan's confident tone.
Her idea made my chest race, an interesting thought as I leaned back with a thin smile.
"It looks like our road just became interesting."
Upload the map information to the System map.

Although the women looked at me with a mixture of worry and excitement, I focused on that red dot and the surrounding area of the base.
This district was mine to take.
