Chapter 281: Taming Horses
Shelter.
After arranging the beastman squad, Solomon, and some support staff, Lin Yi decided to personally command the battle.
If there were powerful monsters on the second-fastest fragment, he would have to evacuate everyone immediately.
This fragment barely jostled, and it connected to the shelter.
A portion of the mist wall dissipated, revealing a vast yellow plain before their eyes.
Lin Yi examined the entire fragment.
Among them, the plain and a small stone city appeared incredibly ancient, almost abandoned.
The appearance of the enemy took the beastmen by surprise.
This fragment once was a part of their home planet.
The zombies charging towards them were—dead Taru beastmen.
Their faces, tattoos, and hair all bore the unmistakable features of beastmen, though their armor was old and worn.
Except for being zombies, the dead Taru people looked somewhat different from the living ones.
They appeared more like shamans, at least twice as short and weak as the beastman warriors of the shelter.
"Let our ancestors rest in peace! Kill them all!" The young beastman leader Ter Mar roared and charged into the battle.
The beastmen grabbed their axes and followed him towards the steel wall. Dark red blood splattered, and the axes mercilessly hacked into the zombies' heads. Their rotting flesh was absorbed by the ground, transformed into biomass...
At the beastmen's request, Lin Yi did not let others intervene in this battle, only assisting from the sidelines to teleport the beastmen away if necessary.
Soon, the information prompt rang.
[Congratulations!]
You have successfully captured a smaller space-time fragment.
As a reward, your shelter received 20,000 experience points, along with 480 acres of land and all the resources on this land.
[Congratulations!]
You have successfully captured a smaller space-time fragment.
As a reward, your shelter received 20,000 experience points, along with 268 acres of land and all the resources on this land.
Both fragments have been occupied.
Lin Yi re-entered the Sea of Space-Time but still found no worthwhile targets...
He noticed a few interesting-looking fragments, but they were far away and moving in the wrong direction.
At this moment, Siri's voice entered Lin Yi's mind.
"Boss! I found a very red one, but we need to change course and leave this time stream."
"Then let's move."
About ten minutes later.
He saw a massive fragment floating in the Sea of Space-Time; it was gigantic!
This fragment was nearly twice the size of the shelter and blindingly red.
"Well done, Siri!"
Lin Yi imagined where these metal resources might have come from.
What if there was a military base on the fragment? Or a crashed spaceship? Or perhaps a port with a navy?
The fragment was too large, and Lin Yi couldn't immediately find a suitable docking point. In the end, he connected it with the fragment of the Hilania people.
He decided to try the new 2.0 version defense "Death Straw" device.
As soon as the fragment connected with the shelter, drones and quadcopters were launched.
When Lin Yi saw the images on the monitor, his excitement immediately vanished.
There was no crashed spaceship on this fragment, no navy, no tanks.
Only mountains... mountains and forests...
A minute passed, then two minutes, five minutes... ten minutes... still no enemy appeared.
Solomon asked, "Maybe there are no zombies there?"
"Possibly, but I still want to check first; let's send the dragon."
Lin Yi glanced at the Dragon Maiden sitting under the tent and Da Chuan, who was happily giving her a shoulder massage.
"Lovebirds, time to work. Go search the forest and mountains for enemy creatures. Remember, I mean every inch of this area!"
"Alright..." Mira grumbled.
She climbed into her power armor, with Da Chuan following her, transforming into dragon form and taking off.
While they searched the fragment, Lin Yi returned to Earth to check on his crazy plunderer squad.
Everything was progressing smoothly.
The plunderers had girls responsible for monitoring cameras that told them hiding spots, danger areas, and hidden enemy positions. They also had bait and power armor.
About five minutes later, the dragon landed.
Da Chuan reported, "Boss! We didn't see zombies there, but there were mutated animals."
"Hmm... We've never seen animals on a fragment before. How to provoke them? I don't want to fight them in the forest... Are they big?"
"About the size of a bull."
"Are they strong? What do they look like? Alright... fly there and capture a few for me. I need them alive and intact."
After giving the order, the boss went to talk with Solomon.
He just had a few ideas.
Mira grumbled a few complaints but didn't dare defy the boss's order, so she obediently flew back to the fragment.
"Solomon, how many Beast Tamers do we have?"
"A few, but I'm not sure about the exact number... about five or so; do you want me to check?"
"No need, bring all the Beast Tamers here."
"Yes, boss!"
Soon, Solomon returned with three women and four men.
They all looked like soldiers, but their gear seemed casual, indicating they were civilian volunteers.
These seven warriors stood in a line and saluted Lin Yi.
"At ease, what's your skill level?"
"Mine is level 2," one woman replied.
"I'm still level 1..." one man said.
"Level 2."
...
They answered one by one, getting straight to the point.
Their skill levels were either Level 2 or ready to be upgraded to Level 2 at any moment.
At this moment, the dragons returned.
The Green Dragon was clutching an injured large horse, with two curved horns on its forehead, while the Red Dragon held a horse without horns.
Both horses were much larger than those on Earth, with strong legs, enormous bodies, bulging muscles, and large mouths, though they didn't have tusks or sharp teeth.
"We need them intact, Mira..." Lin Yi felt quite helpless upon seeing the half-dead horse.
The Green Dragon roared, "It's still alive! But it kept resisting, so I had to teach it how to be a horse!"
The horse Da Chuan caught was in better shape, kicking and struggling, but was held tightly to the ground.
Lin Yi looked towards a few Beast Tamers.
"Who wants to try taming these animals?"
"I will!" a woman about forty years old stepped forward.
Tears were in her eyes, as if she felt heartache upon seeing these poor, injured animals.
"Boss! After we tame them, can you heal them?"
"If you can, don't worry, Solomon will protect you."
Solomon nodded, transforming into a five-meter-tall Stone Giant, standing behind the woman.
The woman ran towards the injured, two-horned horse, approaching it cautiously.
"Poor little thing!" the woman looked at the animal, "If you're willing to be my friend, I promise I'll save you, please don't die..."
Her voice was very calm, as she stroked the horse's fur.
The horse tried to kick, but its strength was waning...
The woman activated her skill.
Her hand emitted a green light, which began to seep into the animal's fur, but then the animal suddenly convulsed and began to resist.
The Da Chuan Dragon kept it pressed down, and it couldn't fight back.
"It didn't work... Can I try again?"
Lin Yi nodded, and the woman continued her attempt.
Her hand glowed like before, but the skill still failed, and the horse began to struggle violently, causing its wounds to bleed more.
"You're going to die! You... don't you want to have foals? Don't you want to run on the grass, graze, and lie leisurely in the warm sunshine? If you don't agree, you'll die!"
The woman shouted while crying, then...
The green light from her hand didn't seep into the horse's fur but spread out, covering the entire body of this injured mutant animal.
All its resistance stopped, and the horse's breathing became steady.
"It worked! Boss, please call a doctor over, I beg you!" the woman shouted.
But before she could react, six Hilania healers had already surrounded the horse.
Unlike doctors, they could directly infuse their magic power into the horse's body, healing its wounds, and promoting regeneration.
After a full five minutes of treatment, with spring water and a bucket of carrots fed, the horse could stand again.
"Is it a Level 3 animal?"
Lin Yi looked at the giant horse and asked the woman. This horse might be great for plowing.
The woman was very happy, stroking the horse.
"Boss, she's Level 3! And she can use Earth Magic, we can communicate through mind connection... she told me her abilities."
"Oh, is that so? Then perhaps we should catch them all, if horses are for plowing, as well as patrolling, that would be great..."
"No, please don't! Just let Bella talk to them, she can convince them to join us!"
"Bella?"
Lin Yi first looked at the horse, and then at the woman.
He smiled a little, pointing at the Level 2 mutant horse pressed down by the Red Dragon.
"Why don't you let her go and try to persuade that one over there to behave?"
"Okay!" the woman replied.
The mutant horse Bella stood up.
She could walk, although with some difficulty.
They walked to the Red Dragon.
Bella whinnied a few times and got a response somewhere between a howl and a neigh.
"I guess it's not very willing, right?"
"Boss... please, just give her some time! I beg you!"
"Alright... your love for animals, were you dealing with animals before the apocalypse?"
"Yes." The woman nodded, then looked at the horses, "I used to work at a zoo, and later opened a pet shelter."
"What's your name?"
"Svetlana Prochazka."
"You're not French?"
"No, I'm Czech."
"You're quite far from home."
"Boss! You have the nerve to say that, aren't you far from home too?" the woman chuckled.
She was a neat and capable woman, with a good figure, and like all the female soldiers, she braided her hair or wore it in a ponytail.
Lin Yi thought her personality might not suit being a commander, but managing logistics and animals could be suitable.
Sure enough, soon the woman excitedly said, "They've talked it out! She convinced it, it's a Level 2 horse!"
"Svetlana, with your skills, can you release an animal, or replace it with another?"
"Yes, I can release an animal... but that would be painful for me and the animal.
When you tame an animal, it's like... you open your soul to them, and they in turn open their hearts to you."
"...So it's a half-binding? Then focus on taming the Level 3 animals makes more sense."
Lin Yi murmured to himself, he could upgrade those animals to Level 3, but how long would that take?
"Sigh, never mind... who wants this Level 2 pony? You can try it out."
"Boss! It wants to choose its master itself, is that okay?" the woman looked at him with pleading eyes.
Lin Yi had a bit of a realization, this must be some kind of French woman's manipulation tactic, especially with her blue eyes...
But trying it could be interesting...
