Chapter 2: Being Summoned Is More Of A Pain Than I Thought
"ehem" the human girl as if trying to get my attention. Then she smiles once again. I somehow get the feeling that this girl is an airhead.
"You said earlier that you haven't accepted the job, right." confirming what she had just said I nodded. "Well, since you have officially stepped into our world then that means that you have accepted it, right," she added still smiling. Although she's cute my attention right now is not focused on her but on what she said.
"Huh? Like I said, I haven't accepted the job, and besides, there are a lot of things I want an answer to." Yeah, there are way too many questions that I want an answer to. Since I already know that I am now in a completely different world, I want an answer as to why it has to be me and not someone else. There should be someone more capable of handling things than me, who's just an average run-of-the-mill student.
"eeeeehhhh!!! But you already step in here which means you have accepted it."
"Because you guys said to hurry up or I'd get caught up inside the collapsing space. The only reason I step in here is because I have no choice." I retorted
The only reason I follow them is because they told me to hurry up or maybe they have already planned to make me step outside the white room and force the job on me. That's a dirty trick for you, 'tsk'.
I look at the demon girl and yes she's really beautiful the only problem is that horn of hers. I wonder if it's real or just an illusion to make herself look more demon-like. Nah, that'd be stupid if it's not real.
"Did you just lie to me when you said that I'd be in trouble if I stayed in there?" I questioned her while directly looking into her jet-black eyes waiting for an answer but the one who answers is not her but rather the human girl.
"No, what she said is nothing but the truth." she said then continued "The place you were in earlier is the border between your world and our world. It is a passage created when our world interacted with yours." with that I wonder what could have happened if I just stand there and wait for it to collapse on itself. I was about to ask her about my thoughts when the demon girl chimed in our conversation continuing the explanation and seemingly answering my thoughts.
"What's beyond the collapsing space isn't the world you know, nor the world you came from. It is a vast, endless void, a place where even light cannot escape, and time has long since ceased to exist. There, only a crushing emptiness remains, where the very thought of death is the only thing that lingers in your mind—but even death has no power there. It's a fate worse than any hell, for it is neither life nor death, just an eternal yearning for an end that will never come. So, if you were given a choice—if you could choose between staying within this collapsing space, or stepping out into our world—tell me... what would you choose?"
She finished with a chilling pause, her words hanging heavy in the air. The realization settled in like ice in my veins. I could not die, but would forever wish for it, trapped in that unbearable, unending void. I had never imagined something like this could be my fate.
"I see..." sigh. "Then why me? Why am I the one who got pulled into this? The chances of that happening are one in eight billion. Among those eight billion, there are elites—people who exist specifically for this kind of job that you're forcing on me."
The question gnawed at me, a constant weight in my mind since the moment they explained the reason for my summoning. It didn't make sense. The person they need is someone capable of creating a bond between people, if the summoning was supposed to be based on skills, then did it fail? Cause that made no sense at all. The odds were so slim... so impossibly small that I should even be considered. One in eight billion? That wasn't just improbable—it was practically impossible.
And still... here I am.
Did I miss something? Was there some detail I overlooked? Or was there something more to this, something about me that made me stand out? I couldn't shake the feeling that maybe I was special in some way. 'Hehehe that maybe is the reason.' 'but, still… why can't I remember what happened before all this?'
My mind was blank as if some part of me had been erased, or maybe it was never even there, to begin with.
The doubt spiraled deeper. The whole thing felt like an insidious puzzle with pieces that didn't fit. What the hell happened to me? What exactly did happen before I was transported here?
I was about to ask them again when the human girl answered my earlier question.
"That may be the case, to be honest even to us it is a mystery but those eight billion to one odds are not quite the truth as to why..." she stops and looks at the demon girl asking if she can continue or leave it like that. I was itching for an answer myself so I turned to the demon girl and waited for it to continue.
"There are two reasons," the human girl continues "though I am not sure if that same reasoning applies to you." she stops again.
"what do you mean?"
"the eight billion to one probability that you speak of earlier is not exactly the truth as for the reason, it is the source magic. Wait, your world has eight billion people? That's ten digits you know? What are you some kind of sexual beast?"
"let's leave it at that for now and continue." The demon lady chimed before the shocking out of nowhere question her partner yelled at the top of her lungs.
"ehemmm… So what I am saying is, tell me what do you think is the most notable difference between your former world and ours?" she asked.
"Magic"
"That is exactly what differentiates the two worlds. Our world is brimming with natural energy. Every living being has what we call source magic or origin. The existence of these sources enables us, its inhabitants to connect ourselves to this world. That is how magic works. On the same note, unlike our world, only a small proportion of your people possess source magic."
"if that is the case, then the source magic, I have it inside of me, but, if that is the case, then doesn't that mean that I too can use magic?"
"Yes," she answered shortly.
"Then why can't I use magic in my former world."
"It's simple," she stops as if teasing me.
"The reason you cannot use it or even realize it is because your world can't contain magic itself." She continued.
To think that I have the innate ability to use magic is quite exhilarating. Doesn't that mean that I am special? This is getting interesting but I still have tons of questions to ask and I still can't be sure of my future here, especially with that job they are forcing me to comply. If they would just ask me to help out I would have no problem with it but to be in charge of the whole 'bridge for peace' is unbearable to me.
No one can do it, even on Earth peace may be an option but it never stays like that. War will inevitably break out even if we continue to walk the path of not wanting to have anything to do with others. There are those people who seek power, to gain the upper hand by any means necessary. Similarly, some people choose to seclude themselves from the larger totality.
'No nation has friends only interest' is a quote that has everything to it. The only way for there to be peace on Earth is to rid it of the sources of all evil, that evil we call humanity. Everything starts from them and stems like roots, slowly corrupting everything. A world like that will have no future and the only thing that's waiting for it is destruction. An inescapable end, one fitting for such a corrupted race.
"Now I understand, so as for the other reason. You said that there are two reasons right, then what about the other one? If I was summoned here then there is the possibility that I can return to my world, right."
If I am summoned here by these two, then the possibility of returning home is certain. If they have the ability to summon an individual from our world, then they have the ability to bring them back. I don't want it to be some generic Isekai where the main character has to find a way to go back home. It will be fun for the most part, but who knows how long will that take.
"As for the other reason and your question, we can only summon someone from your world without knowing who will show up."
"what do you mean?"
Then they only summon someone and with a pure coincidence, it is me that they got summoned. Hoyhoyhoy... Then all of this is nothing but out of a whim. Does that mean that my life in my real world got ruined by these ideals of them? Not like I have much anyway.
"Did I hear it right? Then that means, I was randomly summoned here without any reason at all. I have my entrance exam today. Do you have the ability to bring me back to my world?"
"You will have to forgive us. We have no way to bring you back, and even if we have we can't bring you back."
I don't know how I should react, maybe part of me wanted to go back home, but at the same time, I also think that living here can't be that bad.
Besides, analyzing what she said, I began to understand the meaning behind her words. The gap in my memory is not just because I was summoned here but maybe because something happened that caused this missing memory. If only I could remember it then, maybe, I could arrive at an answer.
The reason they cannot bring me back is not only for the sole reason of not having the ability but something else. After concluding, I closed my eyes and slowly muttered the words.
"I died"
This is the only reason I can think of. The missing memory will be the proof of it, I don't know what happened, but that may be the real reason.
Looking as if she was proud of a kid who learned how to walk. "It isn't praise for you but still to arrive at such a conclusion I can say that you are quite sharper than you appear to be." the demon lady chimed in as she smiled.
It is not a matter of being sharp or not, they already have given me the clue to arrive at such a conclusion.
"Now I understand everything, I won't ask any questions but to be honest I don't have the ability you are seeking. I have no idea of what I am supposed to do."
My mind is still unclear, but the questions I have been wanting aching for an answer, have gone and slowly faded away. The only choice I have now is to take the job they are forcing me to, or I just have to run away. Running away is always an option, but I don't even have the slightest clue about the structure of this world. I for sure will end up dead in some random alleyway somewhere.
"That... Even we don't have any idea how to make it happen." she again held my hands as if saying that I would be the one to think of any ideas.
Hoyhoyhoy... How can you still smile after what you have just said? I have a bad feeling about what may come to this world if they leave everything to me.
I look at the demon girl with a questioning look.
"This is not my idea, I only agreed to her thinking that she has a plan herself." For the first time, the cool aura was shattered.
Talking with them makes me feel like they are knowledgeable about this thing only to find out that these two are absolute morons. Looking at them, I kinda expected that the human girl would be an airhead because of her action ever since I first came in contact with her it did not come to me that even this seemingly serious and cool demon would be the same. This will be troublesome. 'sigh'
I'll leave it like that for now.
Now that I remember it. We haven't introduced ourselves yet, guess I'll introduce myself first since it is quite rude to ask for their names without giving mine first.
"Well since it already came to this and I don't have any choice, let's introduce ourselves but will you let go of my hands first." 'else my heart stops beating, really.' The last part I said only in my head. 'sigh'
"My name is Ran Misaki. 17 years old, I can't tell you my birthday as I don't have any idea if the same calendar works here."
Come to think of it how am I supposed to tell when my birthday is when I don't know how date works here and the more pressing problem is literacy, this is a completely different world we may speak the same language but only on verbal, thinking about it now, are we even speaking the same language or some magic is at work? There are writings all over the place but I can't read any of them, they look like Greek symbols or something. This is just my first day here and I already have encountered a difficult challenge. Learning the basic way of life here should be simple but language acquisition takes time, especially with this kind of writing. Should introduce the alphabet here? That way we can communicate easily besides the alphabet is simple what you see is what you read and what it sounds. 'sigh'
Welp, like the bald guy everyone knows, I'll leave tomorrow's problem to the tomorrow me.
"I am Silica Sillford Gradeu, 17 years old, first princess of the Sillford empire, they call me seven sources hero. Nice to meet you and hope we can complete our mission to end the ongoing war between our races."
This girl... With her introduction, I felt like everything that I was hoping for to come true had vanished into thin air. I guess, I am bound to be just that bridge for these two races. Wait wait wait... How come this airhead of a princess became a hero, that's…
"I feel like I'm being insulted from the inside."
"eh!!! It's not like that." am I that easy to read?
"Then you're admitting to it." then she pouted.
What the... You're cute but hell why are you an airhead? Is she always like this or perhaps there are times when she needs to be serious?
"I guess I'm next. The name is Evangeline Sinclaire one of the four true demon lords that reign in the West. I don't need to state my age as I am much older than you and if you try to ask I'm going to kill you."
A hero and a demon lord that's an absolute ingredient to a perfect plan for self-destruction. How come this polar opposite was able to come to a peaceful resolution and why the hell are they in such a friendly manner?
"She's 64, don't bother about her threats she's always been like that." Evangeline glared at her but she just shrugged it off.
"Nah... Is it okay if I ask you but are you guys fine siding with each other? I thought the mission of a hero is to eliminate the threats to humanity and it is obvious that a demon lord is the biggest threat for you?"
"I befriended her..."
"..."
Those words that came out of her mouth left me speechless. This hero, I wonder if it is her being an airhead or if there is something with Evangeline that I can't comprehend at all at this moment.
I just hope that everything will go according to our still non-existing plan.
'sigh'
Ongoing war she said, I'm dead.
