Chapter 23 - Machine God Chronicles - Episode 17 (1)
“The 7th Outer God, commonly known as ‘Black Goat’. Or ‘Goddess of Abundance’. Is it truly an enemy that cannot be defeated by human hands?”
“Even if we want to defeat it, there’s absolutely no way. The Outer God’s attacks work well on us, but our attacks don’t reach the Outer God.”
“I think that Outer God is usually hiding its main body in an 11-dimensional Klein space. And it only projects its body into 3-dimensional space when interfering with our side. Interference from higher dimensions to lower dimensions is quite natural, you see.”
“…11 dimensions? No, as far as I know, even great magicians can’t reach beyond 6 dimensions, right? Then doesn’t that mean we have no way to attack the Outer God’s main body?”
“You’re not wrong. Indeed, we don’t have the means to attack the Outer God. However, that doesn’t mean we have no way to defeat that Outer God.”
“As always, we will find a way.”
“…..”
In a living room far larger and more luxurious than any ordinary mansion, or even most noble houses.
There, a woman was biting her lip as she watched a rerun of “Machine God Chronicles” through a recording artifact.
She was trembling her hand continuously as if something was terribly displeasing to her.
But separately from that, her eyes never left the artifact broadcasting the recorded version of “Machine God Chronicles” even for a moment.
Her name was Evangeline von Thieria.
She was the daughter of the Thieria duchy, one of the four great ducal families of the empire, and at the same time, the woman who had been driven out by the imperial princess after causing a disturbance at the “Machine God Chronicles” audition site not long ago.
And now, Evangeline was feeling terribly regretful about her actions at the audition site not long ago.
Especially when she heard the voice of Liz, that woman who had confidently taken the lead role in “Machine God Chronicles” instead of her on television.
“…Haa, really. Why did I do that back then?”
Evangeline was originally a woman who loved art-related genres very much.
Also, since she had learned vocal music as part of her education from a young age, she had great pride in her own voice.
But Evangeline didn’t feel any interest in places where she could use her voice, like plays or operas.
Because she didn’t find plays or operas very interesting.
Of course, she had watched plenty of plays and operas as part of her education, but that was nothing more or less than social life.
That’s probably why.
The moment she happened to see “The Disappearance of Elli and Hamel” one day, she quickly became an enthusiastic fan.
Unlike boring plays or operas, animation was very interesting and at the same time a fantastic art genre that seemed to stretch human imagination to its limits.
As Evangeline indulged in everything related to “The Disappearance of Elli and Hamel”, she learned that Elli’s voice actress was Serika, the daughter of Duke Grinewald, whom she knew well.
If Serika could become a voice actress, she thought she could do it too, and confidently applied for the voice actor audition for “Machine God Chronicles”.
But.
“The person who will voice the protagonist ‘Kai’ in this audition is Ms. Lizeira Milleyu. Congratulations.”
“R-Really? Th-Thank you!”
“…..”
It was unacceptable.
Because objectively speaking, her voice was much better than that Liz woman’s.
Also, she had acted naturally to a different dimension compared to Liz’s voice, which was awkward because she had never learned acting.
Yet Ragna Tersion, the producer of “The Disappearance of Elli and Hamel”, casually failed her in the audition.
It was so incomprehensible and at the same time infuriating.
That’s why Evangeline was so angry that she ended up saying words that she would have despised the most under normal circumstances.
Y-Your Highness….
It seems it might get a bit noisy if we talk here at the audition site, so shall we go over there and have a private conversation?
In the end, she was restrained by the imperial princess for her behavior and driven out of the mansion.
Honestly, Evangeline herself thought she had behaved in a way that deserved to be driven out, so she didn’t make any particular protest about it.
But if nothing else, she couldn’t help but be dissatisfied with the fact that they chose that woman Liz, who was far inferior to her, for the lead role.
But.
“You’re trying to run away again.”
“…Pardon?”
“You’re trying to run away again, using the excuse of having to find your little sister. This is what you chose. So, take responsibility for your choice until the end.”
“Ms. Rinoa doesn’t know anything…! For me, finding my little sister’s whereabouts is just as important as saving humanity!”
‘…I have to admit this.’
That’s right.
If nothing else, Liz’s voice matched the protagonist Kai’s voice too well.
As if they had created Kai’s image in the animation “Machine God Chronicles” while imagining Liz’s voice.
Also, Liz’s acting, which had been incredibly awkward during the audition, was now so skillful that it was unbelievable.
At this point, even Evangeline had to admit it.
The fact that the man called Ragna Tersion had seen through all of this from the beginning.
“…..”
That’s why at this moment, she regrets it so much.
If only she hadn’t spoken rudely to the producer at that place.
If only she had humbly acknowledged her shortcomings and shown a polite attitude asking if she could be given another role.
There would have been plenty of possibility to take on other leading roles like ‘Eileen’ or ‘Chloe’, the heroines of “Machine God Chronicles”.
‘Moreover, “Machine God Chronicles” is an animation that gives a lot of narrative not only to the protagonist Kai but also to the heroines, so even more so.’
Just looking at Eileen, one of the heroines of “Machine God Chronicles” and at the same time one of the Machine God pilots, you could see this fact well.
The character called Eileen seemed to have a very confident personality and at the same time looked down on Kai on the surface.
But in fact, she had a very delicate personality, and at the same time, it was very subtly shown throughout the anime that she had a subtle affection for Kai.
For example, in episode 10 of “Machine God Chronicles”, Eileen succeeds in subjugating an Outer God by joining forces with Kai.
And that night, Eileen barges into Kai’s room and says this to him.
“Tonight, I’ll specially give you the right to sleep in the same room as me. That’s my reward for subjugating the Outer God today.”
“Wh-What?”
“But, only up to there. Never cross this line. This line is the Nineveh Wall. Got it?”
On the surface, Eileen’s behavior seemed incomprehensible.
But Evangeline could easily see what Eileen’s true intentions were while watching that scene.
‘The Nineveh Wall. The wall in legend that collapsed on its own when the first emperor, the Knight King, approached it.’
In other words, isn’t the ‘line’ that Eileen drew for Kai a subtle hint that it would easily collapse just by him getting close?
Besides just the ‘Nineveh Wall’, there were devices hidden here and there in “Machine God Chronicles” showing that Eileen had a subtle affection for Kai.
Evangeline could once again realize how much of a genius producer Ragna was while watching these subtle foreshadowings hidden like codes.
…And she could only curse her own foolishness for not being able to participate in the animation he made by building bad blood with such a Ragna.
“…Haa, I was really stupid.”
As Evangeline sighed and muttered to herself, Sera, her personal maid who had been standing silently beside her, suddenly opened her mouth.
“I’m glad you’ve realized it now. That you did something truly stupid, my lady.”
“…Sera.”
“Indeed, you did something stupid, my lady. But the fact that you’re regretting after doing something stupid means there’s room for improvement.”
“…Aren’t you being a bit harsh?”
Evangeline glanced slightly at Sera but didn’t say anything more to her.
Because Sera was not just a personal maid but also her close childhood friend.
And as a friend, she had enough qualification to say such things to Evangeline.
“So later, go to the director of ‘Machine God Chronicles’ and apologize for the rudeness you committed that day. Well, I’m not sure if he’ll forgive you, but that’s the least you can do as a person.”
“…I know that much.”
Evangeline answered, pouting her lips.
“So, what’s the best way to apologize to the director?”
“Well, how about kneeling three times and bowing your head nine times to the director?”
“…Come on. Can’t you give me a serious answer?”
As Evangeline was talking with Sera like this, she realized that the broadcast time of “Machine God Chronicles” had already passed.
“…My lady.”
“Yeah. Let’s talk about this later and watch ‘Machine God Chronicles’ for now. Today was supposed to be episode 17, right?”
So Evangeline and Sera focused their attention on the television.
But.
“…Huh?”
A moment later, Evangeline tilted her head unconsciously while looking at the television.
“Hey, Sera?”
“Yes, my lady.”
“Um, in ‘Machine God Chronicles’, the Machine Gods were on humanity’s side, right?”
“Yes, according to the setting, the Machine Gods were created by humanity.”
“And the Outer Gods were the enemies that the Machine Gods had to defeat.”
“Yes.”
“…Then why on earth are the Machine Gods fighting each other, strangling each other’s necks?”
Mecha genre cliché number two.
No matter how much they’re on the same side, there’s always a scene where the mechas fight each other.
