Chapter 119: Chapter 119
Holding his foot, Chachamaru jumped around ranting about the constant sharp aches that wouldn't go away. The battle against the pain in different parts of his body was overwhelming, he could barely focus on his discovery; The Aztec Temple that Banri told them about that stood right in front of him.
"Yikes! I almost stepped on that rock it would've really hurt! Ow ow ow!"
The sound of leaves rustling turned Chachamaru's attention to the trail. "Oh that was such a hassle..." Douma said appearing from the shadows of the dense forest.
Chachamaru stared at him in shock. "You followed me here? What if those bugs followed you here too!"
Douma grinned cheerfully, "Than I'll just have to freeze them like popsicles." The blonde replied calmly, summoning a swirl of frost with his fan.
"I couldn't find the med kit which is rather unfortunate..."
The feline raised a brow at his pretending-to-be-disappointed friend. Yeah some friend indeed. "Unfortunate? So I have to walk back and forth with this swelling foot? Great, exploring this Aztec Temple is gonna be so fun I don't have to worry about any stairs or ladders! Everything will be fine!"
A crease formed on Douma's forehead. You got yourself in this mess.
In frustration, Chachamaru sat against the boulder behind him and stared at the bright blue sky, thinking about the state of his limbs that were restricting him from doing the tasks he was assigned with. "This mission sucks."
"Yeah it sure does." Douma walked over to him and extended a palm towards the feline. Within seconds a bright glow appeared on the blonde's palm, it rose and flew towards Chachamaru, clearing the wounds in an instant.
"What my wounds are all gone! I didn't know you could that!" Chachamaru stared at his skin wide-eyed, it was back to normal without any marks or bruises. Clear like porcelain.
Meanwhile, Douma gazed at the Aztec Temple standing before them. It appeared to have been hidden for quite some time, but now it has revealed itself after many years of people searching for this mystery on the island.
"Who needs a med kit when you've got-"
Chachamaru sprang up to his feet. "Hey where do you think you're going? Don't leave me here! I don't wanna miss out on this part of the mission!" The feline ran after Douma who inspected the entrance of the Aztec Temple closely.
"It's probably been here for decades. Even though this island is secluded from the closest of civilizations it has a rich history. There's more to this than what people normally hear." Douma walked into the Aztec Temple like a visitor at a museum only this time both he and Chachamaru had to watch their surroundings which Douma wasn't doing.
"Alright I'm not scared of the dark!" Chachamaru marched outside the entrance in circles before sprinting into the ancient temple to catch up with Douma. "Wait for me! Don't leave me here all by myself, we're a team!"
~~~
Both Douma and Chachamaru held their torches up against a wall with ancient writings and drawings similar to the ones they saw near the bandits' base.
"Maybe there was a community here on this island. I wonder where they all went."
"Which bears the possibility that there might be more hidden structures on this island. It just so happens that this one's still standing."
"Because of that giant!" Chachamaru piped up as they continued forward.
The path in front of them lit up, revealing more narrow halls with the same kind of scriptures written on the walls.
"Exactly and he's probably in here right now so stay alert." Douma proceeded to the side of the wide space in this particular part of the ancient temple. He tried to decipher what the messages on the walls and pillars were trying to convey.
Just the thought of the giant watching them in the dark corners of the ancient temple made Chachamaru's skin crawl. He followed Douma, glancing behind him every few seconds.
"So do you think we're the only ones here?"
"Oh definitely!"
"Why do you make it sound like it's a good thing?!" Chachamaru couldn't comprehend why Douma was so calm about this in a potentially abandoned ancient temple.
"Less distractions." The angel stopped beside one of the walls and shone his torch on its surface.
Chachamaru crossed his arms over his chest boldly. "Well regardless of who's here, I'm not scared. In fact, that giant doesn't terrify me, if anything, he's the one hiding from me! That's why he hasn't come out yet! Ha!"
"Wise words, just don't get lost." That was odd, Douma's voice sounded distant.
That's when Chachamaru realized he was far behind. "Cut it out already!" He yelled running towards the angel who continued walking.
"Wait."
Chachamaru was confused, they stopped in front of a small hallway but for some reason Douma blocked him with his arm. It was just a hallway what's the big deal?
"This is getting annoying I'm out of here!" The feline pushed Douma out of the way and ran towards the small hallway.
Douma managed to keep his balance from Chachamaru's recklessness. This was foolish and if the feline paid attention he'd know why.
"Stay away from there Chachamaru you don't know what you're doing!" The blonde shouted at him.
"Oh shut it! You're no fun!"
It's not fun if you're putting yourself in danger, this is not an attraction. Scoffing, the blonde ran after Chachamaru but it was too late he already set foot in that small hallway.
Everything seemed normal until Chachamaru stepped on one of the plates on the floor which activated some sort of mechanism behind the walls. Chachamaru couldn't see it but he heard something which left him terrified.
An arrow shot out of a hole on the wall. It almost impaled Chachamaru who immediately moved away, accidentally stepping on a few more plates that summoned more arrows towards him from both sides.
"Ahhh! Help!" Chachamaru tiptoed out of the hallway spinning around when he got to the safer end. He panted and muttered to himself tiredly. "That was crazy..."
The angel bolted down the hallway avoiding the plates on the floor. Chachamaru couldn't believe that Douma was able to speed through the trap without stepping on the plates by mistake. If only he had abilities like that.
"Wow that was spectacular..." Chachamaru tried to conceal his envy but Douma could sense it.
"This is why you should always keep your eyes and ears open." Douma glanced behind them one last time before continuing forward towards a brighter area with an artifact on a stand in the middle that was reflected by the light above it from the ceiling.
"Yeah yeah whatever." Chachamaru snorted following closely behind.
