Chapter 312: Master of Stirring the Pot
The much-anticipated and closely-watched showdown turned into an unexpected rout, as the Kansas City Chiefs mercilessly dominated the Oakland Raiders. Once again, it was proven that matchups between these division rivals are always full of surprises.
Just as no one predicted the Raiders' shocking game-winning upset six weeks ago to end their four-game losing streak, no one expected the Chiefs to come roaring back today, annihilating the Raiders to end their six-game losing streak.
This season's two Kansas City vs. Oakland matchups were truly full of twists, maintaining the tradition of unpredictability.
"What happened over the past week?"
At the post-game press conference, reporters couldn't wait to ask the burning question on everyone's mind. How did the Kansas City Chiefs transform so dramatically in just one week?
Under the glaring spotlight, Lance appeared calm and composed.
"Nothing happened."
The reporters were taken aback. "What?"
"We stuck to our regular training and preparation. Nothing special changed. We maintained our faith, believed we were still one of the most competitive teams in the league, and kept our sights set on the playoffs."
"That's it."
While everyone loves to identify a turning point in sports—one miraculous play, one pivotal moment, one stroke of genius that changes everything—the truth is rarely so glamorous.
Faith, rhythm, confidence, and countless intangibles often combine in subtle ways, leading to a team's resurgence. Lance's answer was simple yet honest.
The reporters, however, weren't convinced. "Sure…"
Over the past six weeks, the media had ripped the Chiefs apart, their criticisms relentless. The same voices that once lauded Lance to the heavens had been quick to drag him through the mud.
Now, seeing Lance's calm demeanor, some journalists felt a twinge of guilt, as if his composure was a subtle form of revenge.
Even so, the press didn't relent.
"Lance, today you played as a wide receiver in several critical moments. Was this a secret weapon you've been working on?"
Lance smirked. "Oh, I thought our rising star proved in the fourth quarter that he's the real secret weapon. If you say this, it might hurt his feelings."
He spread his hands in mock dismay and tilted his head toward the ceiling, mimicking wiping away tears.
The press room burst into laughter.
Suddenly, one journalist stood up, hand raised high to demand attention, and threw out a bombshell question:
"Lance, you delivered another phenomenal performance today: 133 rushing yards, 122 receiving yards, and four touchdowns. Some are saying you've entered the conversation for MVP. How do you feel about that?"
The room fell into stunned silence.
MVP?
A rookie entering the Most Valuable Player race? That was unheard of.
Historically, rookies are considered in their own category, competing for honors like Offensive Rookie of the Year or Defensive Rookie of the Year. To even suggest a rookie—especially a running back—could be a regular-season MVP contender was unprecedented.
The press room buzzed with murmurs, the air thick with astonishment. The questioner seemed to have dropped a live grenade, and even Lance was momentarily sidelined in the frenzy of chatter.
Lance, though initially startled by the idea, quickly regained his composure.
This revelation was a surprise, but a pleasant one. His rookie season had been filled with unexpected highs, and being linked to MVP discussions was just the latest. Seeing the journalists' disbelief, Lance smiled.
"Looks like I'll need to work even harder."
The word "even" subtly hinted at the reporters' skepticism. Was Lance truly serious about competing for MVP, or was he teasing the notion because even the press couldn't believe it?
Either way, his remark sparked another wave of discussion that rippled far beyond the press conference.
MVP? Lance? Really?
Why not?
Through Week 13 of the regular season, Lance had unquestionably been one of the league's most electrifying players. His performances spoke for themselves, and the league had already recognized his brilliance.
Rookie Accolades:
AFC Rookie of the Month: September and October. In November, the award went to quarterback Deshaun Watson, but Lance remained a dominant force.
League-Wide Recognition:
Four-time AFC Offensive Player of the Week, surpassing Tom Brady's three wins. AFC Offensive Player of the Month: September and October. Lance became the first rookie in NFL history to sweep both the Rookie of the Month and Offensive Player of the Month awards for consecutive months.
Statistical Milestones:
Rushing Yards: 1,636. Rushing Touchdowns: 18. Fumbles: Zero.
Lance broke Adrian Peterson's record for the fewest games needed to surpass 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie. Peterson did it in eight games; Lance needed only seven.
He also set a new record for most rushing yards in a rookie season without a single fumble.
And with three regular-season games left, Lance had the chance to shatter even more records.
In the Passing Era, Running Backs Still Matter.
In today's NFL, where passing dominates and running backs are often overshadowed, Lance's achievements stood out even more.
His every step was rewriting history.
