Chapter 535: 535. The Plan!
Racing down the staircase and out of the building, Adrianna staggered as she took her first step into the open air. The acrid smoke in the atmosphere hit her like a wave, making her knees nearly buckle.
She had spent all her time indoors, protected by Alex's magical barrier, and had no idea how dire the situation outside had become. Now, stepping into the chaos, she finally understood the scale of the catastrophe consuming Kahndaq.
Her heart clenched as she stared at her beloved homeland reduced to ruins. Determined, she set her gaze on the distant battlefield where the opposing sides faced off in the sky. Adrianna hurriedly found an abandoned car at the roadside and sped toward the scene.
-----------------------------------
High above, Ishmael grew increasingly impatient as the crown failed to arrive. His irritation only deepened when he noticed flickers of lightning illuminating the distant city, a sign of Barry Allen's activity. Anxiety gnawed at him.
Though Ishmael's tenure with Intergang was brief, he was all too aware of the infamous battle in New York that had captured the world's attention. The Justice Society heroes were incredibly powerful, and without his current energy shield, any of them could end his life in an instant.
This realization made him even more agitated.
"Bring me my crown! This is your last warning! Do you want the flames of war to engulf all of Kahndaq?!" Ishmael bellowed.
Hawkman clenched his fists.
"Give it up, Ishmael. You've lost. If you surrender now, I promise, in the name of the Justice Society, that your life will be spared. Aren't you a descendant of Kahndaq's royal line? Do you truly want to see your homeland fall?"
"I am Kahndaq's only true king!" Ishmael shouted madly. "If I can't rule it, then so what if it falls?"
Hawkman hovered in place, his wings stirring the air as he locked eyes with Ishmael. His tone softened, attempting to reach the man.
"Look around you, Ishmael. Look at the ground beneath your feet. Is this destruction what you wanted? Is this the legacy you wish to leave behind?"
Ishmael followed Hawkman's gesture toward the city below. The capital of Kahndaq, once bustling with life, now lay in utter ruin. Advanced weaponry had left it in shambles, its already fragile infrastructure decimated.
For a moment, Ishmael's expression flickered with hesitation. His carefully laid plans had spiraled far beyond his control.
Initially, his goal had been to infiltrate Adrianna's small group and use her historical knowledge to locate the crown. Ishmael had never intended to reveal himself to the Justice Society.
But everything changed when Adrianna unleashed Teth-Adam from his ancient imprisonment. What followed was a scramble of rival factions pouring into Kahndaq, forcing Ishmael into a corner.
He knew that Intergang's actions here would undoubtedly draw the United Nations' attention. If he failed to secure the crown, the retaliation from the world's governments would spell their doom.
-----------------------------------
Unaware of these complexities, Teth-Adam watched the scene unfold, perplexed by Hawkman's genuine attempt to reason with Ishmael.
Teth-Adam began to understand the essence of the Justice Society, but he couldn't help wondering why Hawkman had treated him with such hostility earlier while now offering such patience to Ishmael.
Ishmael's thoughts were in turmoil as he stared at the devastation below. For a brief moment, he questioned whether he had made a grave mistake.
However, his gaze inadvertently fell upon a car approaching in the distance. It wasn't just any car—it was the one carrying Adrianna.
Though the connection was faint, Ishmael could feel the crown's presence growing closer. His hesitation vanished instantly, replaced by a look of triumph.
Hawkman noticed the sudden shift in Ishmael's expression and froze, confused by the change. Before he could act, Ishmael barked orders to the Intergang soldiers behind him.
"Prepare the hovercraft for landing! Adrianna is bringing my crown!"
Hawkman and Teth-Adam exchanged a glance before spotting the vehicle below. With their enhanced vision, they could see Adrianna clearly as she approached.
"Dammit!" Hawkman cursed, diving toward the car without hesitation, his wings propelling him with incredible speed.
Adrianna, realizing she had been spotted, slammed on the brakes and jumped out, clutching the crown in her hands.
Hawkman landed in front of her, blocking her path.
"Are you insane?! Why didn't you stay at home under protection?"
Adrianna's expression was resolute.
"I refuse to watch my people suffer for my choices. And I won't gamble Kahndaq's future over this cursed crown."
Hawkman's fury erupted.
"Are you out of your mind? The power in that crown is far more dangerous than you can imagine! If you hand it over, it won't just threaten Kahndaq—it'll endanger the entire world!"
"I Have a Plan," Adrianna said
"You—what plan?!" Hawkman chuckled bitterly, half in disbelief.
But Adrianna had no time to explain her reasoning to him. She leaned in and spoke quickly and quietly.
"You and Adam can't break that barrier, right? That's because it's powered by Kahndaq's unique supply of Eternium metal. Not only does it prevent you from harming anyone inside, but it also traps the people inside until the barrier is disabled."
At that moment, Teth-Adam stepped forward to join them. "Go on," he said simply.
Adrianna nodded slightly and continued, "The crown can't penetrate the barrier. If Ishmael wants it, he'll have to disable the barrier first. That moment—when the barrier is down—is our chance."
Hawkman considered her words carefully. She was right; they couldn't keep stalling here indefinitely. If Intergang started massacring civilians in other cities across Kahndaq, the Justice Society wouldn't be able to stop them.
If that happened, every life lost would be a stain on the Justice Society's name.
Hawkman glanced at Teth-Adam beside him. Their only hope now lay with this man. Hawkman lacked long-range combat capabilities, and if he tried crafting a bow from his Nth metal, Intergang would surely catch on.
After a moment of hesitation, Hawkman asked, "How confident are you?"
"If it's a question of survival, I'm 100% confident," Teth-Adam replied after a moment's thought, his voice brimming with certainty.
The situation left Hawkman with no time for second-guessing. Seeing that Intergang's aircraft had begun landing, he sighed heavily.
"Then we'll go with this plan."
-----------------------------------
Intergang's warship landed in the central plaza with a thunderous roar, yet the protective barrier remained steadfast, shielding everyone inside from harm.
From the ship, Ishmael spotted Adrianna in the distance, holding the crown in her hands. His smile spread uncontrollably across his face.
"Adrianna, my lucky star," he said smugly.
"Shut up, you traitor to Kahndaq!" Adrianna spat angrily.
"Say what you will," Ishmael sneered coldly. "Soon, I'll be the true king of Kahndaq."
"You may carry the blood of the Ahk-Ton royal family," Adrianna shot back, "but you're unworthy of calling yourself a Kahndaqi."
Her fiery words made it clear there was no room for negotiation. Ishmael had no interest in further conversation either; he only wanted his prize.
"Enough talk! Hand over the crown!" he demanded.
Then, narrowing his eyes, he added, "Only you. I know exactly what those two can do."
Hawkman's face darkened. He had hoped to deliver the crown himself—it was far too dangerous to send an ordinary woman like Adrianna into the lion's den.
But Adrianna, having long since made peace with the possibility of her own death, nodded resolutely.
"Fine," she said.
Gripping the crown tightly, Adrianna took a deep breath and began to walk forward.
Though the distance was only about a hundred meters, each step felt endless. Even though she wasn't afraid to die, she couldn't deny the tension coursing through her.
Step by step, she approached until she was within ten meters of Ishmael.
Raising her head, Adrianna met Ishmael's eager gaze and said firmly, "I'm here."
"Good," Ishmael replied with a sly grin. "I'll count to three. Toss the crown to me—no tricks. You know what will happen if you try anything." His eyes flicked briefly toward Hawkman and Teth-Adam, standing motionless in the distance.
"Alright," Adrianna replied, her voice calm despite the circumstances.
"One."
Ishmael placed his hand on the control panel for the barrier.
"Two."
Hawkman's palms grew sweaty, while Teth-Adam narrowed his eyes in preparation.
"Three!"
Before Ishmael finished speaking, everyone sprang into action.
Adrianna hurled the crown toward Ishmael with all her might, then turned to run.
The crown arced through the air toward the barrier. Just as it was about to collide with the shimmering blue field, the barrier vanished. Ishmael, his face alight with triumph, rushed to intercept the crown.
From a hundred meters away, Teth-Adam, who had been preparing for this moment, extended his hand like a gun. Channeling his divine power, a bolt of lightning erupted from his fingers, racing toward Ishmael with blinding speed.
The lightning streaked through the air, catching up to the crown in mere moments.
As Ishmael grasped the crown and attempted to reactivate the Eternium-powered barrier, the lightning bolt struck him square in the chest, piercing through him.
For a brief moment, Ishmael's triumphant smile remained frozen on his face.
But the lightning didn't stop. After blasting through Ishmael's chest, it continued its relentless path, striking the engine of Intergang's warship.
The engine, unable to withstand the surge of divine energy, exploded violently.
BOOM!
The deafening explosion shattered the silence as Hawkman, flying at full speed, reached Adrianna. He spread his wings wide, shielding her from the fiery blast with his unyielding form.
