Chapter 533: 533. The Beginning of War.
(Adrianna!)
From the warplanes above, massive speakers blared a man's voice, which echoed throughout the capital city of Kahndaq.
At this moment, all the people of Kahndaq huddled inside their homes, holding their heads in fear that the Intergang terrorists might fire bullets indiscriminately.
The deafening voice from the warplanes continued.
"Hand over the crown! This is your final warning! If you don't come out now, then say goodbye to everyone in this city—men, women, and children alike!"
"It's Ishmael!"
Adrianna immediately recognized the voice, and her expression darkened.
"That traitor?" Hawkman frowned. Adrianna must have told them about Ishmael during the earlier intel briefing.
"It's him. I didn't know before that he was part of Intergang. Their goal all along has been this Crown of Sabbac. What should we do?" Adrianna held the crown tightly, her anxiety evident.
Hearing this, Doctor Fate raised his hand, and a golden, faceless helmet appeared in his grasp. At the same time, his casual suit transformed into a sorcerer's robe.
"Hawkman, follow Teth-Adam. Intergang holds the lives of the entire city's population in their hands. If he starts a massacre, they might retaliate by harming civilians."
"Understood." Hawkman nodded firmly and didn't waste any time.
He leaped through the hole Teth-Adam had made in the wall. Spreading his metallic wings, he soared into the sky.
After giving his orders, Doctor Fate turned his attention to the crown.
"I can sense it. This crown carries the chaotic and evil energy of disorder. It must either be destroyed or sealed away in the Society's vault. This must be the vessel filled with demonic power, correct?"
Alex nodded slightly in acknowledgment. Having gained the power of Nabu and wielding the force of order, Doctor Fate was highly sensitive to such chaotic and malevolent energies.
"But if we don't hand it over, Kahndaq will be in danger," Adrianna said, glancing out at the city, now on the verge of being engulfed in flames of war.
"I can use magic to create an identical replica," Doctor Fate offered immediately.
"It won't work."
At this point, Alex spoke up.
"Ishmael is a descendant of King Sabbac. His ancestors made a pact with demons, and his bloodline has a connection to the crown. He'll be able to tell at a glance if it's fake."
Hearing this, Doctor Fate looked troubled. Outside, Teth-Adam and Hawkman had already engaged with Intergang, and the entire city was turning into a battlefield. Doctor Fate sighed.
"Then our only hope is for Teth-Adam and Hawkman to find Ishmael as quickly as possible. Once he's dealt with, Intergang will likely back down."
Doctor Fate paused, visibly frustrated. If he'd known this was Intergang's base of operations, he would have called in Time Master, Midnight Doctor, and Nightwing as reinforcements earlier.
After a moment of hesitation, Doctor Fate put on his helmet.
"I'll start teleporting civilians out of the battlefield's epicenter. Alex, please contact the Flash. At this point, he's our best chance for immediate assistance."
With those words, Doctor Fate's figure shimmered and disappeared from sight.
With the Justice Society's heroes and Teth-Adam all heading into action, the room was left with only Adrianna, Amon, Karim, and Alex.
Seeing the family's eyes on him, Alex shrugged and pulled out his phone. "You heard them—I need to make a call."
"What about us?" Adrianna asked, clutching the crown like it was a scorching hot coal.
"Though the house is damaged, my magical barriers are still intact. As long as you don't go outside, no one can see you. The only downside is that it interferes with signals. I'll be going now."
With that, Alex raised his hand and drew a circle in the air. A shimmering, golden portal filled with sparks of light appeared before him.
From inside the room, they could see through the portal to a barren desert landscape on the other side.
Stepping through the portal, Alex closed it behind him. He then pulled out his phone—not the one modified by Tim, but the one he'd previously used in this universe.
Alex wasn't lying when he said the magical barriers interfered with signals. While the Bat Network was unaffected, using an ordinary phone for calls here was difficult.
This phone was one Pietro had "borrowed" in this universe, and Alex had stored only two numbers in it—those of Old Batman and young Barry Allen. He hadn't used it since, and this was the first time he was putting it to use.
Looking at the two numbers in his contacts, Alex hesitated for a moment before dialing.
The call connected almost immediately—perhaps Barry Allen had been using his phone at the time.
"Hello? Is this Alex? It's Alex, isn't it?! Oh my God, I never thought you'd come back! I mean, I hoped you would, but I wasn't sure you actually would!"
As soon as the call connected, Barry Allen's enthusiastic voice came pouring through.
"Alex! Is that you? It's really you, isn't it?! Oh my God, I never thought you'd actually come back! I mean, I hoped you would, but I wasn't sure—"
Hearing the cheerful and confident rambling of the young and sunny Flash, Alex smiled faintly and interrupted.
"Alright, let's save the reunion talk for later."
"Oh, oh, right, of course! You're here for something important, aren't you? Don't tell me it's another alien invasion to destroy the world—once was enough for me!"
"Ahem!"
"Sorry, you go ahead!"
"The Justice Society's mission in Kahndaq—you've probably seen it. I just sent you the location. We could use your help here," Alex said.
"No problem, I'm on my—"
Before Barry could finish, the connection abruptly cut off. It wasn't so much a hang-up as a complete disconnection.
It seemed the young Flash couldn't wait a second longer and had already rushed to the scene.
Glancing at the time, Alex turned his gaze toward the distant capital of Kahndaq, where smoke was billowing. Intense combat had clearly erupted within the city.
High above, Black Adam streaked through the sky, smashing a warplane into fragments while gripping one of the Intergang pilots in his hand.
"P-please, don't kill me!"
The Intergang pilot was utterly terrified, having never encountered such a fearsome presence.
Looking at the pleading pilot, Black Adam was about to strike but hesitated as Alex's earlier words came to mind. After a brief pause, he muttered to himself.
"Judging by your appearance, you don't seem to be a 'scientist' type of sorcerer but rather one assigned to combat. Since you're here, you're not likely a spy or undercover agent, which means you're not an ally either."
The Intergang pilot, on the verge of losing control, had no idea what Black Adam was talking about.
After finishing his self-assessment, Black Adam nodded to himself.
"In that case, I won't feel any guilt about killing you."
Without waiting for a response, Black Adam released his grip. The Intergang pilot screamed as he plummeted toward the ground in free fall.
Not far from Black Adam, Hawkman had just taken down another warplane and let the pilot parachute to safety. Hearing Black Adam's self-talk, Hawkman clenched his jaw but said nothing.
Intergang, armed with advanced Kryptonian-inspired technology, had developed powerful and sophisticated weapons. However, they were still no match for true Kryptonian weaponry—or for semi-divine beings like Hawkman and Black Adam. Within minutes, Intergang's forces were left in disarray.
At that moment, a bullet glowing with an eerie blue light streaked through the air, heading straight for Black Adam.
Black Adam usually paid no mind to bullets, which were as insignificant as pebbles to him, incapable of piercing his defenses. However, this bullet struck his shoulder and passed clean through.
The sudden, searing pain nearly caused Black Adam to lose his balance in midair.
Looking at the glowing blue wound on his shoulder, he immediately recognized it as the work of Eternium. He remembered being severely injured by an Eternium-laced magical missile when he was first unsealed.
While he was momentarily stunned, several more missiles imbued with blue energy locked onto him and launched simultaneously, streaking toward his position.
By the time Black Adam reacted, it was too late. Already weakened by the Eternium, he could barely maintain his flight, let alone take evasive action.
Just as the missiles were about to hit him, a golden figure appeared out of nowhere.
Boom!
A massive explosion engulfed the area, momentarily blinding everyone's view.
In front of Black Adam, Hawkman stood with his shield raised, breathing heavily.
"What are you spacing out for?!"
Hearing this, Black Adam didn't offer an explanation. He had no intention of revealing that Eternium was his weakness. However, he did look at Hawkman with a hint of newfound respect.
Although this guy was irritating and annoying, he had proven himself reliable in a crisis.
Fixing his gaze on the warplane that had launched the missiles, a flash of killing intent appeared in Black Adam's eyes. Though the Eternium bullets had delayed him for only a few seconds, the power flowing back into his body was more than enough. Black Adam raised his hand decisively.
A jagged bolt of lightning, roaring like a dragon, tore through the smoke and struck the warplane directly, creating an even larger explosion.
However, to Black Adam's surprise, the divine lightning he had relied on countless times failed to destroy its target completely. Instead, it was blocked by some kind of energy barrier.
Inside the warplane, Ishmael stood on an anti-gravity platform, surrounded by a shimmering blue shield. A smug grin spread across his face as he surveyed the scene.
"It's useless. This is a protective barrier fused with Eternium and Kryptonian technology. Even beings like you can't break through it!"
