Chapter 5: Battle Strategies and Sass
The room was quiet except for the shuffling of Dorian's feet. That was a sign he was worried and eager to find a solution. I smiled as I looked at him, I trusted him to be able to guide my pups until they would be of age. First, I had to make one. There was no time to be sad or to be angry. I had to do what was right for my pack now; it's not just about me anymore.
I don't know what that healer woman gave to me but I felt calm. I could sense Damien stirring every now and then, he needed to be strong. If the other Alphas found out that a pupless alpha has a weak wolf, it would be open season for my people.
"How long does it take these people to make a damned decision? It was their idea to give their daughter as Luna in the first place," Dorian said, getting restless.
Almost immediately, a knock echoed at the door.
"Enter," I called, a little ache in my throat from the ordeal of the previous day.
I saw it again as she stepped into the room and bowed low before speaking, her full hair of silver eerily familiar. "Alpha Duncan and his daughter Lila are waiting in his study, Alpha Kaelen. They will see you now,"
Dorian stood up eagerly from his seat, "Well, about time," he muttered.
"Wait outside," I told the omega, she bowed once more and left the room while I turned to Dorian. "Behave yourself, Dorian. We are in another Alpha's territory. One slip up and he will think you are challenging him. I know you're angry, don't misplace that anger. Be angry at me, be a man, and face me with your anger,"
Dorian looked into my eyes for the first time since he got the news I would be dying soon. "I would never… Why would you think? I am angry at myself,"
"Why would you…"
"Because I have failed in everything. I have failed as your beta; I have failed as your friend. I have one job as both – to protect you."
"There is nothing you could have done. No one could have seen this coming, no one can stop it. You heard the healer, it's not physical. It's spiritual and emotional. Come on, you don't really want me to spend my last days with a grumpy beta, do you?" I tried to cheer him up. The truth is I missed his sarcasm and witty comebacks.
"I thought you would exchange me for a Luna for being a thorn in your side" he quipped, one eyebrow rose.
"Well, let's just say in the little time I have left, I would like to tolerate you," I gave him a pat on the back and headed for the door.
"Tolerate me. You looove me," he drawled in a sing-song voice.
"Shut the fuck up," I smiled as we stepped out of the room, the silver-haired omega waiting obediently. "Lead the way,"
We made our way to Alpha Duncan's private study, what is it with this man and going overboard with decorations; old swords were hanging from the walls, and paintings of alphas before him.
A large framed map of their territory was spread out on the oak table, with a few thumbtacks pinned on some areas. It finally made sense, Alpha Duncan was preparing for war.
Beside him stood Lila, looking radiant and beautiful. Today, she had her golden hair braided elegantly as opposed to yesterday when she had it hanging down her shoulders. I remembered her hovering over me in worry while I was ill. Did she already care that much about me?
"Ah, Alpha Kaelen," Duncan greeted, "I believe you're feeling better?"
"Good as new," I lied, "Your healer is very skilled."
Dorian smirked. "Let's just say fear is a great motivator. Lila threatened to personally gut her if she didn't fix you,"
I shot Lila a glance, "You did uhn?"
"We wouldn't want a dead alpha on our land. Too much paperwork and months of investigations," she replied with a tiny but unmistakable glint in her eyes.
"Wow, I am touched by your concern," I held a hand to my chest and she gave me a slight smile in return.
Duncan gestured for us to sit. "Kaelen, I'll get straight to the point. Dorian here told me about your plans. Is there any reason for your sudden change of mind?"
I leaned back in my chair, "I was impressed during my spar at your training ground. You have a strong breed and look like a strong bloodline. I would love unstoppable pups,"
Duncan looked up at Lila briefly who now had an expressionless gaze. "My Lila has been trained since her alignment with her wolf. She is a fine warrior and can take down some of my fine men. She would make a great Alpha herself but as Luna to you and our packs becoming one, I can rest in peace,"
"What are you afraid of Duncan? Don't give me that bullshit about a storm coming. I feel like you're setting pieces of a chessboard in motion."
"I cannot explain it, Kaelen. I hear whispers from my friends in the East. There are plans to make us bend the knee," Duncan whispered leaning closer to me. "It's not possible as we can't be forced into monarchy, it has to be a choice but I am a careful man. And I like to be prepared for anything."
I nodded. "I'm sure if there would be anything to be worried about; it would make it to the top of the agenda during the annual alpha's meeting,"
"Look," Duncan continued, "You have enough time to think it over. Lila will spend the next two weeks with you and your pack and you can make your decision from there."
"Like I told Dorian to tell you, my pack has to approve and Lila herself has to approve." I looked up at her.
"I'd like to see how you flex your muscles first,"
"Oooooh snap!!!" Dorian whistled.
"Dorian!" I snapped at him.
Lila chuckled quietly but I could see the movement of her body and the sparkle in her eyes. This is really not going as planned. I should not be noticing these things. She had one job as my Luna and that was to give me pups, I didn't care for any emotional attachments.
"Fine," I said, exhaling heavily. "I am not promising anything, Alpha Duncan. We both understand each other?"
Duncan nodded. "Of course!"
