Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Akame and Kurome
Esdeath pushed aside the messy thoughts in her mind.
"The Prime Minister seems to want you transferred to the assassination unit," she said to Blayn.
"What kind of place is that? A department for carrying out assassinations?" Blayn asked.
"Something like that. Their main targets are rebels—like Night Raid, which has been making a lot of noise recently. I don't know the details, but the assassination unit operates under the intelligence agency," Esdeath explained casually. "In any case, it's technically a promotion. You've been climbing the ranks pretty fast. At this rate, it won't be long before you replace Najenda as a general."
"So, am I expected to go there in the next couple of days?" Blayn asked.
He was intrigued by this new role—it would give him a chance to interact with the so-called rebels, in other words, the Revolutionary Army.
Blayn wanted to determine where he truly stood.
Would he continue climbing the military ladder and become a high-ranking officer?
Or would he side with the Revolutionary Army to overthrow the Empire and establish a new one?
Perhaps he would support the royalists, ensuring the young emperor's survival while eliminating the true root of corruption—the Prime Minister.
As for becoming Prime Minister himself or even seizing the throne, he had no interest. He wasn't skilled in politics, nor did he care for it. Managing an entire empire wasn't something he was arrogant enough to consider.
Since he had ended up in this world, he had to do something—he couldn't just spend his days hunting Danger Beasts. That would be far too dull.
But for now, Blayn hadn't made up his mind.
He didn't know the exact military strength of the Empire, the Revolutionary Army, or the foreign tribes. Jumping headfirst into helping the revolution could be disastrous.
If the Empire and the Revolutionary Army crippled each other, leaving the foreign tribes to invade in the aftermath… wouldn't that just lead to a repeat of the Ming Dynasty's downfall?
"It should be within the next few days. The assassination unit has been in turmoil recently," Esdeath said.
"What happened?" Blayn asked curiously.
"The elite group within the assassination unit—seven of them—are either dead or on the run. Even their commander was killed, and his Teigu, Murasame, was stolen. The one who killed him was a girl named Akame. Apparently, she defected to Night Raid," Esdeath said indifferently.
She had no sympathy for the deaths of those people.
However, Night Raid piqued her interest. She had heard that every single member was a Teigu user.
And Esdeath loved fighting strong opponents.
Even Najenda had been allowed to escape on purpose. Esdeath could have killed her before the Revolutionary Army arrived, but she wanted Najenda to return stronger.
It would make for a far more enjoyable battle.
That was just Esdeath's twisted sense of fun.
Murasame...
Blayn had just read about that Teigu in the book earlier.
"So, the elite forces of the assassination unit are basically gone? No wonder they want me and Seryu to go there," Blayn muttered.
"Pretty much. I heard there's still a Teigu user named Kurome in the assassination unit—she didn't defect. But the rest of the members aren't worth much," Esdeath said bluntly. "Still, this is a good opportunity. The assassination unit is in shambles right now. If you make an impact, you'll climb the ranks even faster."
"That makes sense..."
Blayn turned to Seryu. "What about you, Seryu? Do you want this?"
"...My opinion?"
Seryu blinked, as if the thought had never crossed her mind.
To her, obedience to the Empire was absolute. The idea of having a choice in the matter had never even occurred to her.
"Of course I do! I want to fight alongside Master and carry out justice! Right, Koro?"
Seryu looked at her partner.
"Chirp~!" Koro jumped up, letting out a cheerful noise.
"Then it's settled. I should be returning to the frontlines anyway," Esdeath said before turning to leave.
Her priority was still war—nothing else mattered more.
After all, she hadn't even figured out what she really felt about Blayn.
As for Seryu working with Blayn in the assassination unit, Esdeath didn't mind.
As long as she didn't have to see Blayn getting close to another woman, she wouldn't feel that strange discomfort again.
It wasn't as if she would go so far as to forbid him from interacting with other women altogether.
As Esdeath left, Seryu watched her go with admiration.
"General Esdeath is incredible. She never stops hunting down evil."
Then, turning to Blayn, she asked curiously, "Master, you seem really close to General Esdeath. Have you known her for a long time?"
"Not really. We only met recently," Blayn replied.
"Eh? Really?" Seryu looked surprised. "It feels like you two have a special connection, though..."
She wasn't sure what exactly made it seem that way, but something about their dynamic felt different.
…
The next day.
Blayn received an official summons.
A replacement would be sent to take over his and Seryu's positions in the security force. They were to report to the assassination unit immediately.
Since both of the unit's previous commanders had been killed by Akame, Blayn was assigned as the new leader.
Seryu would be his assistant.
Their job was to train the remaining members of the assassination unit, most of whom were under twenty—around the same age as Blayn and Seryu.
Blayn had already received a personnel file and was reviewing it on the way to the unit's base.
The file contained names, weapons, strengths, weaknesses, and background information.
And one detail stood out.
Every single member of the assassination unit was an orphan.
"So they specifically select orphans to be trained as killers…?" Blayn mused.
Classic.
Scanning the list, he noted that there was only one other Teigu user in the unit. A few had Shingu, but the majority wielded ordinary weapons.
The Teigu user was Kurome—Akame's younger sister.
Her Teigu, March of the Dead: Yatsufusa, allowed her to control the bodies of those slain by it, effectively turning them into puppets.
She could command up to eight corpses at a time, and they retained the abilities they had in life.
However, the more puppets she controlled, the weaker her own combat ability became.
All things considered, it was an incredibly powerful Teigu.
"Akame and Kurome, huh..."
Blayn muttered to himself, deep in thought.
