Chapter 9: An Unpopular man
***************************************************************************************
"What are you planning now, young master?" Xavier asked while looking at the back of Damien's head.
If not for the fact that he couldn't pull Damien's head apart and see what was going inside of it, Damien was certain that this man would have done that by now.
"What do you mean by planning? Did you not hear what the beastman said? I simply helped his tribe by treating their injuries," Damien grumbled.
He understood why Xavier was suspicious of him but there was no need for him to make it so obvious.
It was downright insulting.
"Do you mean to say that you, who only read a few books on medicine, suddenly know how to treat people?"
"And have you forgotten the part where you are considered a traitor?"
"Or the fact that you were sent to the Wolfe family by the Emperor despite the stern rejection of the Wolfe family to be involved with the royal family?"
Damien felt his heart pierced again and again by Xavier's questions, he closed his eyes while breathing in and out.
'Calm down, calm down. You cannot take down this man, since you cannot fight with him at the moment..just let it go,' Damien told himself before exhaling.
He then said, "If you are suspicious then you can investigate the matter yourself. Isn't that why you were placed next to me? To keep an eye on what I do and where I go, right? What are you worried about then?"
"Don't worry even if you delay a little on the investigation Wistoria will not blame you. After all, you are her loyal servant."
Xavier's brows rose as he listened to Damien's words.
He believed that he had hidden his intentions quite cleanly, even the second and third brother of Damien could not tell anything.
And those two were skilled in martial arts even when their beast nucleus was destroyed and suppressed like their brother.
Yet this man who spent all the time in the library like a maniac to find a solution to repair his own broken core, was able to notice his sneaky actions?
"Since the Banppee Wolves made such a loud ruckus, the healers and soldiers will annihilate them, right?" Damien changed the topic of conversation as he was not good at dealing with people like Xavier.
The way the man was looking at him changed every second and by change, he meant that Xavier's gaze became more and more murderous.
"I don't think that will happen," Xavier closed his eyes and clutched the reins of the horse tightly. "The healers are too prideful to risk their lives to get hold of a second-class beast like Banppe wolves and as for the soldiers…"
"I heard that they are being bribed by the royal family to ignore the ruckus in Aeloria."
The Wolfe family along with the Kiem family watched over the city of Aeloria. While the Wolfe family were neutral, the Kiem family who held the title of Duke were loyal to the Royal family.
Thus, it was not a surprise that because of the strife and struggle between the two families, the city was in a mess.
Even though Wistoria had control over half of the royal army, the other half was under the control of the Kiem family.
At the moment, Wistoria and the rest of the Wolfe family were trying to suppress the Four-Horned Python beasts in the south.
How would they deal with this mess with the Kiem family ignoring the entire situation?
More importantly, there was another reason why Aeloria City was being dragged down. It was because of the Wolfe family's rejection to let their only daughter marry this body's second brother, who was now the Emperor.
Emiliano de Brystoria had once proposed to Wistoria to gain a better foothold in the court years ago. But the Wolfe family had always been neutral.
A rejection was obvious.
But Emiliano, despite knowing this went ahead with his little plan, and the result was as everyone expected. Who would have expected that Emiliano would take such a thing to his heart and suppress the Wolfe family?
This was why Aeloria City, which had been under the control of the Wolfe family for centuries, was now under the control Kiem family with only half of the cities left under the Wolfe family's jurisdiction.
'This damned luck of mine. If I was going to reincarnate then it would have been better to reincarnate in a prosperous country. Instead, I ended up here,' Damien cursed his luck with a dead fish look on his face.
Even without having any knowledge of political matters, Damien knew that this country was not safe and there was a very high chance of war breaking out.
He didn't even have a place to run to because he was branded as a slave. If he tried to run away and forget about the crazy Emperor, he would be killed by his wife and her family first.
"What are you thinking?" Xavier watched the man go quiet and questioned.
"….Can I not even have some thoughts now? Are you going to spy on them too?" Damien deadpanned and heaved a sigh when the man behind him no longer spoke.
Silence was what he wanted and needed the most at that moment.
The two of them travelled for three hours before they arrived at the mansion which was in the middle of the bustling city. Even though it was late at night, the streets were filled with people who roamed around the streets while boisterously laughing and singing.
Damien hopped down from the horse when Xavier came to a stop in front of the gates of the mansion where two guards were stationed and neither of them saluted him.
'What a mess. This body was really treated like an uninvited guest, wasn't he?' Damien clicked his tongue.
The guards did not salute him but they were quick to salute Xavier who also jumped down the horse and straightened up to his full height.
Noticing the sombre expression of the guards, he questioned, "What happened?"
The guards parted their lips at once but did not say anything. Instead, they turned their heads and looked at Damien.
Damien: "…" Just how unpopular was this man?
