Chapter 87: The Love of a Brother
"What do you mean by that is the general idea?" Damien felt as if he was being played, what was the point of telling him all of this and then end it with – oh it was just the general idea. Either someone was helping that transcendental beast come back or it wasn't.
What was general here?
"What I mean here is that unfortunately for us, Emiliano doesn't seem to agree with this notion that almost everyone who has a mind of their own agrees with," Master Godric told him. "And while Emiliano, who is the Emperor, insists that there is no such thing as the remains of the transcendental beastman— we are insisting that there is."
"This has led the public to panic but at the same time believe that there might not be a situation which will prove as dangerous. After all, why would Emiliano lie and bring his reign in trouble? He is the Emperor and it's his responsibility to take care of the country. "
"And you know why he is doing this?" Damien asked as he had a feeling that Master Godric knew more than he was letting on.
"I can guess —maybe he is afraid to cause trouble in his reign after all, it will be quite troublesome if such a thing happened.. Or…"
"Or?" Damien prodded when Master Godric trailed off without saying anything.
"Or he is the one behind it."
And on that happy note, Master Godric asked Damien to go along with the rest of his day and prepare himself for the mission. Like he could do it!
At the Wolfe Mansion, Priscilla placed a bowl of mushroom soup in front of Henry, she looked at her second brother and tentatively said to him, "It seems like brother succeeded in treating that dog guard. I went to the town today and heard from the townsfolk that a healer treated a dog guard who was injected with snake venom."
She paused and added, "And mother is also getting better. She went to take a walk in the garden this morning on her own, she didn't even need a maid to support her. Isn't it exciting?"
"It is." Henry drank his soup silently while eating a loaf of bread. He had to admit that the prescription that his brother gave to their mother was indeed much better than the one that the healer gave them.
But Henry still didn't trust Damien. How could he? His brother wasn't someone who could be trusted after all. He had seen how maddening and crazy Damien looked after he returned from his journey to the Royal court three months ago.
No one else had because he was the only one brave enough to approach his brother and how did it turn out? He was nearly killed by his brother! He still couldn't forget the feeling of Damien's fingers wrapped around his throat as he yelled at him.
'If only— you were not here! Then I will be able to go back. I can take back what's mine! Mine!'
Henry had not told this incident to anyone for he did not want to worry his mother or his sister. But the trust that he had for his brother was long broken.
"There is no need for you to start trusting him so soon," Henry said to Priscilla with a hint of reproach. He raised his head and looked at his sister before saying to her, "Brother Dami is not a healer nor is he skilled. He is only fortunate enough to succeed in his tries, if he was even a tad bit unfortunate, he would have caused a lot of trouble."
Damien, who had just returned to the mansion, heard the cold words of his brother and narrowed his eyes.
This little – he was not at all cute.
Damien however did not bother with Henry, he walked inside the kitchen and looked at Priscilla, "Prisci, is there anything to eat? I am hungry."
"Brother Dami, you are back?" Priscilla turned to look at Damien with a beaming smile while Henry got to his feet and walked out of the kitchen.
Either he was still uncomfortable in Damien's presence or was worried that there might be another row because of what he just said just now.
Damien watched him leave but didn't say anything. Instead he turned his attention to Prsicilla before asking, "Did you get something nice to eat today?"
"Yes!" Prisiclla nodded as her eyes brightened. "They gave us roasted duck and fillet fish to try in the afternoon. For dinner I asked for something light and they brought some mushroom soup and bread with salted butter."
She paused before saying, "But brother don't worry. I saved you some roasted duck."
"Did you?" Damien ruffled Priscilla on the head as he sat down on the long dining table.
Priscilla went inside the small kitchen which was next to the dining room and brought the reheated roasted duck and mushroom soup. She placed it all in front of Damien before sitting next to Damien, "Brother Dami. Did you really create antivenom? Sister-in-law told me that you did."
Damien coughed upon hearing her words. "Sister –Sister in law? Did you call Lady Wistoria that?"
"I did," the little girl responded with an innocent expression. "Mother said that I should start calling her sister in law."
'Mother!' Damien felt another headache rise.
He hoped that Wistoria was not waiting for him with a guillotine in their room.
Did that woman even take him as her husband? And if she did – to what degrees? Was he and his family even allowed to disrupt her day to day activities?
Damien had countless thoughts which he kept to himself.
"Ahem, I did. What of it?" Damien asked Priscilla who looked at him and said, "Brother–the..then you would have gotten a lot of money right?"
Damien thought of the pitiful amount of golden coins that Adikus, Sigurd and Martha gave to him before he nodded and said, "I did." there was no harm in telling a small lie to a child.
"Then –Then can you buy me a doll? A small one," she corrected herself at once. "I don't want a big one." as she spoke she eyed Damien warily as if afraid that he would get angry.
"Why a small one?" Damien said to Priscilla with a smile on his face. He picked her up in his arms and raised her in the air, "Brother will buy you a big one and a dress as well."
"Hahaha!"
