Age of Ascension: Forging an Immortal Realm from Nothing

chapter 56 - Earthquake! Trial by Flame! (4/4)

From one side of the territory, the [Earthquake Tower] pulsed. Its rhomboid crystal erupted with an earthen, yellow light—heavy, resonant, and world-shaking.
The next second, the ground heaved.
At the very center of the undead ocean, the earth cracked and split apart. A terrifying shockwave rippled outwards, so powerful it distorted the very air.
RUMBLE—!
The ground shook and the mountains groaned. Nature's "disaster" had been unleashed to combat the undead's "disaster."
There were tens of thousands of them. Only a few thousand were the actual invading monsters—the Skeleton Summoners. The rest were all their cannon fodder, slightly weaker, sure… but that was only by comparison. Every single one of these summoned skeletons still boasted dozens of attribute points. They could sprint a hundred meters in under eight seconds, leap four or five meters into the air, and shatter a tree with a single punch. Their bony frames were tougher than you'd think.
And when tens of thousands of these things swarmed together, you had yourself a miniature "Undead Apocalypse."

But the Earthquake was no joke either. At Level 5, {N•o•v•e•l•i•g•h•t} its range was immense, covering the entire perimeter of the territory. The shockwave instantly shattered the frail bones of countless skeleton mages and even dismembered a few unlucky swordsmen who got caught in the fissures. More importantly, it completely destabilized the undead horde. Tens of thousands of skeletons were thrown off balance, tripped up, and trapped by the broken earth.
And at that exact moment…
"Trial by Flame!"
At Wu Chi's command, the [Tower of Fiery Judgment]'s crystal blazed with golden light. The firebird trapped within its core spread its wings, broke free, and materialized in the sky above—a colossal bird of pure flame, dozens of meters long.
"SCREEEEE—!"
The great bird shrieked, unleashing an inferno as it dove straight into the heart of the undead sea.
BOOOOM—!!!
A deafening explosion. The superheated flames vaporized hundreds of skeletons at the epicenter, while the shockwave and waves of heat washed over thousands more.
"…Holy shit," Wu Chi gulped, then waved his hand, signaling the other towers to continue their assault.
Farts, vines, frost, lightning, fireballs, bullets, bolts—an unceasing barrage of death swept over the undead sea.
A skeleton swordsman charged forward, its tough body tanking a hail of machine-gun fire without a scratch. It roared in defiance, only to be instantly frozen, set on fire, and then headshot by a penetrating crossbow bolt. A dozen shield warriors formed a phalanx, but a pyroblast sent them flying before a chain lightning strike turned them all to dust. Three mages were chanting a spell when vines shot up from the ground, entangling them. They panicked, blasting the vines away, but a follow-up frost spell froze them solid, and a single crossbow bolt skewered all three.
The battle was ferocious. If the previous waves were a tide, this was a goddamn tsunami, a monstrous wave crashing down, threatening to smash his little ship to splinters. Inside the walls, the towers thundered relentlessly.
Wu Chi monitored the battlefield, frantically spending Void Crystals to replenish the towers' ammo.
Just then, Lin Daiyu glided over, a hint of urgency on her beautiful face. She curtsied gracefully. "Young Master, permit me to lead a team and eliminate those Summoners. As long as they live, this ocean of undead will be endless." Her voice was soft, but her tone was as sharp as a blade's edge.
There was no doubt she could do it.
Wu Chi, however, shook his head. Then, after a moment's thought, he nodded, moved closer, and whispered a plan into her ear. The proximity made her blush, a lovely pink spreading across her pale neck. But she understood his intent immediately and nodded, her expression turning serious.
Next, Wu Chi found Qin Keqing and tasked her with leading the Great Qin Vanguards on the assassination mission. She was a smart woman; her eyes flickered with understanding, and she accepted without hesitation, though he could see a flicker of nervousness in her eyes. Just a few days ago, she was a sheltered noblewoman. Now, she was a frost-breathing "hero" about to lead a kill-squad into battle. It must have felt like a dream.
But she squared her shoulders, her face resolute, and leaped from a quiet corner of the wall with the Vanguards.
Watching her go, Wu Chi couldn't help but smile.
Poor girl… This is a lot to ask of her.
