Against All Odds: Legacy Of A Football King

Chapter 13: Unreal Performance

As the second half began, the game resumed its fast-paced, end-to-end nature.

Team C, now trailing 3-1, came out with renewed vigor, determined to claw their way back into the match. Team A, on the other hand, sought to extend their lead and finish off the game.

The first few minutes were chaotic, filled with missed chances and narrow escapes. In the 33rd minute, Team A's right-winger, Elias, found himself in space after a well-timed through ball from Luka.

He sprinted down the line, his eyes locked on the goal. As he approached the box, he squared his body and unleashed a powerful shot toward the top corner, but the ball skimmed just over the crossbar.

Minutes later, Team C almost capitalized on a mistake from Team A's defense. Their tall forward, named Kai, intercepted a poor clearance from Johan.

Kai controlled the ball with his chest and quickly passed it to his teammate, who was sprinting into the box.

Fortunately, Freek, the goalkeeper, was quick off his line and managed to block the incoming shot with his outstretched leg.

Benjamin let out a sigh of relief. 'We can't afford to let them get back into this,' he thought, his mind racing.

In the 40th minute, the turning point came. Team C had launched a series of attacks, but Team A's defense stood firm.

After yet another blocked shot in their own 18-yard box, the ball rolled out to the left fullback, Stijn, who immediately looked for a way to break out of the pressure.

Stijn spotted Tariq just outside the box, unmarked and ready to counter. "Tariq, go!" Stijn shouted, launching the ball toward him.

Tariq didn't need a second invitation. He sprinted forward with the ball, his eyes scanning the field for options. But Team C's defensive midfielders, realizing the danger, quickly closed in on him, forcing Tariq to halt his run.

Benjamin, already shifting his position in case he needed to drop back but Tariq pivoted, his foot expertly controlling the ball as he turned and spotted Luka moving into space.

"Tariq, here!" Luka called out, and without hesitation, Tariq passed the ball to him.

Luka took control and charged forward with pace.

Team C's defense scrambled to get back, but there was a vulnerability, only one defender stood between Luka and the goal, and he was clearly wary of Benjamin and Elias, who were both darting toward the box from the wings.

Pieters, their central striker, had also used his speed to get into position. He waved his hand frantically, calling for the ball as he neared the edge of the box. "Luka, pass it!"

Luka kept his eyes on the defender, who was caught in two minds, unsure whether to close down Luka or watch the wingers.

Luka then shifted his body slightly, giving the impression he was about to pass to Elias on the right. The defender reacted, stepping toward Elias.

In that split second, Luka feinted, pretending to pass right but instead sending a perfectly weighted through ball to Benjamin on the left.

"Go, Ben!" Luka yelled as the ball rolled into Benjamin's path.

Benjamin's eyes lit up. He controlled the pass with his right foot and immediately surged into the box. The goalkeeper rushed out, trying to close down the angle.

Benjamin could hear the crowd's anticipation growing, the buzz of excitement rippling through the stands. His heart pounded, but his mind was calm.

'Stay composed,' he reminded himself.

As the goalkeeper lunged, Benjamin performed a couple of quick step-overs, confusing the keeper. Then, with a slight shift in his body, Benjamin faked a shot, sending the goalkeeper sprawling in the wrong direction.

He quickly shifted past the keeper, leaving him on the ground, and found himself staring at an open goal.

But instead of taking the shot himself, Benjamin spotted Elias, wide open to his right.

Unselfishly, Benjamin tapped the ball over to his teammate. Elias, without hesitation, slotted it into the back of the net.

The crowd erupted, and Benjamin couldn't help but smile as he jogged over to Elias, who was grinning from ear to ear.

"Thanks for that, Ben!" Elias shouted over the din of the spectators, giving Benjamin a playful shove.

"No problem," Benjamin replied, breathing heavily but feeling a surge of satisfaction. 'That's 4-1,' he thought, knowing they were now comfortably ahead.

The scouts in the stands exchanged murmurs of approval, impressed not just by Benjamin's skill in beating the goalkeeper, but also by his 'team-first' mentality in setting up the goal.

As they jogged back to their positions, Benjamin's thoughts drifted to Diane. "She would've loved this," he mused, a pang of regret hitting him. But there was no time for distraction; the game wasn't over yet.

Team A's momentum grew after the fourth goal. They controlled the ball better, moving it fluidly through the midfield, while Team C looked deflated, their energy visibly waning.

But Team C wasn't completely out of the game. In the 45th minute, they won a free kick just outside Team A's box. Their central midfielder took the kick, curling the ball toward the top corner.

For a moment, it looked like it was going in, but Freek, with a brilliant dive, managed to tip the ball over the bar.

The game continued with the same fast pace, but it was clear Team A wanted to seal the victory with another goal.

Benjamin found himself in good positions several times, weaving through defenders and creating opportunities for his teammates.

In the 50th minute, Benjamin picked up the ball just inside Team C's half.

He noticed Pieters making a diagonal run toward the box, a defender struggling to keep up with him. Benjamin sent a perfectly weighted pass toward Pieters, splitting the defense.

Pieters ran onto the ball and tried to control it, but his first touch was too heavy. The ball rolled ahead of him, and before he could recover, the goalkeeper rushed out and smothered it.

Pieters slammed the ground in frustration, shaking his head.

"Unlucky!" Benjamin called out, offering encouragement. 'We're getting closer,' he thought. 'One more goal will kill the game off.'

Minutes later, he found himself in another promising position.

Luka, the playmaker, slipped a through ball past Team C's right-back, allowing Benjamin to cut inside toward the edge of the box. He spotted Elias in space on the right and chipped a delicate pass toward him.

Elias tried to volley the ball first-time, but it sailed over the crossbar.

Despite the missed chances, Benjamin kept his focus. There was still time left to make an impact, and he wasn't going to let up. He knew the scouts were watching closely, and every touch on the ball mattered.

In the 58th minute, just as Team C was starting to gain some possession, Team A struck again.

Bram, the defensive midfielder, intercepted a loose pass in the middle of the park and immediately looked up for options. He saw Luka nearby and passed to him.

Luka quickly gave the ball to Benjamin, who was already sprinting down the left wing, leaving his marker behind.

The combination of the three was perfect, Bram's defending, Luka's quick decision-making, and Benjamin's pace. It all came together in a fluid movement.

As Benjamin surged forward, he felt the pressure building. He could hear the opposing fullback's footsteps getting closer, and just ahead, another defender was ready to close him down.

'Two of them,' he noted. His teammates were marked tightly, so passing wasn't an option. 'I've got to do this on my own.'

Benjamin took a deep breath and slowed down, allowing the first defender to commit. He started a series of step-overs, his feet moving rapidly over the ball.

The fullback hesitated, unsure of when to make his move. That's when Benjamin saw his opening.

With a quick flick, he launched the ball over the defender's head, a perfectly executed rainbow flick. The defender was caught completely off-guard, his body twisting awkwardly as Benjamin darted past him.

The crowd erupted in disbelief. The fullback had been left in the dust.

But there was no time to celebrate. The second defender had closed in, trying to cut Benjamin off before he could reach the box. Benjamin, still riding the momentum from his previous move, approached the second defender with confidence.

A couple more step-overs, then he feinted left, causing the defender to shift his weight. In that moment of imbalance, Benjamin performed an inverted elastico, a sharp movement that sent the ball cutting to the right.

The defender stumbled as Benjamin breezed past him and into the edge of the box.

The goal was in sight.

Benjamin quickly glanced up and saw the goalkeeper slightly off his line. Without thinking, he wound up his right foot and curled the ball toward the top corner. The shot was powerful, arcing perfectly as it flew through the air.

The goalkeeper leaped, stretching his hands out but it was too late. The ball dipped at the last second, nestling into the top corner.

For a moment, the stadium fell silent, stunned by what they had just witnessed. Then, the noise came, an explosion of cheers and applause from the stands.

The scouts, who had been diligently watching, scribbled in their notebooks, clearly impressed by Benjamin's dazzling display of skill.

Benjamin stood still for a moment, processing what had just happened. His heart pounded in his chest, and a wide smile broke across his face. His teammates rushed over, slapping him on the back and ruffling his hair.

"That was unreal, Ben!" Luka exclaimed, pulling him into a hug.

"Insane!" Tariq added, his eyes wide with disbelief.

Coach Jansen, who rarely showed emotion, allowed himself a proud smile from the sidelines. He crossed his arms, nodding as if to say, 'That's what I've been waiting for.'

On the other side of the pitch, however, not everyone was pleased. Lars, Team D's right fullback, who had been watching from the bench, grimaced. Seeing Benjamin tear through defenders like that unsettled him.

Lars clenched his fists, his mind racing. 'If I'm going to impress the scouts, I need to stop someone like him,' he thought, staring at Benjamin. 'Next time we face off, I won't hold back.'

As the game restarted, Team C tried to muster some energy, but it was clear their spirits had been broken. Benjamin's goal had taken the wind out of their sails.

With just a few minutes left on the clock, Team A continued to control the game, keeping possession and denying Team C any clear chances.

Finally, the referee blew the final whistle, signaling the end of the match. Team A had won 5-1.

Benjamin exhaled deeply, feeling the exhaustion wash over him. He shook hands with his teammates, offering congratulations, but his mind was still buzzing from the goal he had scored.

As they walked off the field, Coach Jansen approached Benjamin. "Great game today. You're showing everyone why you belong here."

"Thanks, Coach," Benjamin replied, wiping the sweat from his forehead. 'But this is just the beginning,' he thought.

As the players headed toward the locker room to shower and rest, the game between Team B and Team D would soon begin, Lars stayed back, watching Benjamin closely.

He had made up his mind that when they meet in the final match, things would be different.

If stopping Benjamin was what it took to get noticed, then he'd be ruthless in his tackles. 'I'll prove I'm the best defender on the pitch,' Lars thought, determination flashing in his eyes.
