Chapter 407: Heartache
The little girl felt an unprecedented curiosity toward this unexpected visitor before her.
She stared at Bo Jingmo for several minutes, then suddenly tilted her head.
"You carry a familiar scent," she said.
Then she shook her head. "No..."
The smell on this person wasn't quite the same as what she'd noticed upon waking.
Her nose twitched slightly as she turned to look in another direction.
"Over there... there's another familiar scent."
Two of them?
Seeing the girl's brightened eyes, Bo Jingmo slowly crouched down to meet her gaze. With a gentle smile, he asked softly, "Would you like to know why?"
Bo Jingmo nodded with a smile. "I do."
He extended his hand, and a wisp of black mist emerged from his palm, swaying lightly in the air.
"Because what you're sensing is this."
The girl's pupils contracted. After watching quietly for a few seconds, she suddenly beamed. "I have that too!"
Perhaps because Bo Jingmo shared this peculiar trait, the girl seemed quite pleased as she cheerfully opened the door.
Behind her, the room was filled with dense black mist, like entering a foggy forest.
Tilting her head in confusion, she asked, "Why is yours the same as mine? Or... is mine the same as yours?"
By age alone, Bo Jingmo should have possessed it first.
But the man only said gently, "This isn't mine. My beloved gave it to me."
"Beloved?" The girl thought for a moment, then pointed in a direction. "Is it her? I can sense her presence."
"Yes." Bo Jingmo smiled and nodded patiently. "Would you like to meet her? I can take you to see her. That older sister really wants to meet you too."
A glimmer flashed in the girl's eyes, but she slowly shook her head.
"I can't leave here," she said. "Aunt Lin said I'm not allowed to go. The other children would be scared if they saw me. And if you took me away, Aunt Lin would get angry."
Bo Jingmo's expression faltered slightly. Remembering Yu Li's past, his eyelashes trembled faintly before he smiled gently again. "It's alright. That sister will come to see you."
The girl didn't respond, just turned to gaze outside where her view was completely blocked by dense foliage.
After a long silence, she finally whispered, "Okay. I'd like to meet her too."
When she turned back to say something more, she noticed Bo Jingmo's expression and blinked. Suddenly, she reached out to touch his eyes.
"Big brother, what was that emotion in your eyes just now? I've never seen it before."
She'd seen many people's eyes. When they looked at her, their eyes always held different emotions.
Later, she learned these emotions had various names.
Anger. Hatred. Fear. Or excitement. Thrill.
She thought she'd recognized all human emotions, but today, in this stranger's eyes, she saw something entirely new.
"Will you tell me?" she asked with a slight smile. "If you tell me, I'll secretly share a secret with you too, okay?"
Bo Jingmo stiffened slightly. Gently removing her hand, he smoothed the stray hairs by her cheeks and said softly, "Just now... I felt heartache for you. That emotion is called heartache."
The girl didn't pull away, letting him touch her hair as she pondered this. "Heartache? Why would you feel that? When does heartache happen?"
Bo Jingmo considered her questions for a few seconds before his gaze darkened at the sight of her cramped living space behind her.
Lowering his eyes, he pulled a black pen from his pocket. "Because this brother is too useless to take you away from here. That's why the heartache came."
Meeting her innocent gaze, he smiled gently. "Will you help this brother? I'll find a way to take you away from here."
The girl's eyes landed on the pen, and she suddenly laughed.
"Brother isn't useless at all! See? You're already thinking of ways to help me leave!"
She extended her hand generously. "Then I'll trust you this once. You're the first person I've ever trusted."
The unexpected ease made Bo Jingmo pause. Gripping the pen tightly, his voice grew slightly hoarse. "Aren't you afraid... I might lie to you?"
Despite hating deception most, she was willing to trust a complete stranger.
The girl blinked seriously. "It's fine. If you lie to me, I'll just kill you."
Her familiar demeanor made Bo Jingmo freeze before he chuckled. "Alright. If I lie to you, you can kill me."
As Bo Jingmo prepared to leave, the girl suddenly called out, "Wait, brother! I haven't told you my secret yet."
Turning back, he saw her waving at him with a bright smile.
"Tell that sister not to let Aunt Lin see her black mist. Aunt Lin can detect it."
After a thoughtful pause, she added cheerfully, "Well! Since you answered an extra question, I'll tell you one more secret."
Tilting her head, the girl said slowly with a smile:
"You're not the first volunteers to come here."
This revelation exploded like a depth charge, sending shockwaves through the live chat:
[What does that mean?! Holy shit, does this dungeon not reset? Do the NPCs retain memories?]
[Seems like it. Not only does it not reset, but NPCs can see player abilities too. This dungeon is unprecedented.]
[Normally everything resets after players clear it. Guess why this one doesn't...]
[Even crazier—no one's ever completed this dungeon before.]
[I just checked past broadcasts. Guess what? Not a single successful run! Plus, this dungeon's origin will shock you.]
[Don't keep us hanging—spill it!]
[You'll never guess—this dungeon is adapted from Limu's memories!]
The chat erupted:
[No fucking wonder no one's cleared it!]
[That explains everything. So that kid in the attic is young Limu? Their eyes are identical.]
[Forget the eyes—Bo Jingmo's behavior says it all. That man isn't the type to be gentle with kids normally.]
[So that's why the baby resembles Limu! So cute! Let me kiss her!]
[Me too! ^3^]
[To see your wife's childhood self, gain her trust AND get clues... Bo Jingmo, how'd you get so lucky? Did you steal Heavenly Dao's blessings?]
[Maybe it's not luck—maybe he's riding his girlfriend's coattails.]
[Having an OP girlfriend has its perks~(ノ∀`)]
[So who's the final boss? The kid or Aunt Lin?]
[Wait—what about fake Limu? She resembles Yu Li. Their childhood selves must look alike too. The only difference would be... Hold on! I think I get it now!]
[So Bo Jingmo's pen was meant for this all along?]
