Chapter 12-Lilyss, you will suffer
Lyle, who had spent the entire night huddled in a chair, awoke with a yawn.
He was covered with a thin blanket.
In the kitchen, a graceful elven maiden was bustling about, her silhouette a picture of elegance.
A fragrant aroma of white porridge filled the air.
Lyle was momentarily at a loss for words. Astonishingly, the elven maiden had risen even earlier than he had.
“Awake?”
The elven maiden turned around, her cheeks rosy. “It will be ready in a moment, dear teacher. Please wait a while longer.”
Today’s culinary creation by the talented kitchen maiden, Lilyss—limited edition! Exquisite in every way!
However, she was disappointed to find that Lyle seemed rather lackluster as he folded up the blanket.
“By the way, did you change my clothes?” Lyle inquired.
Lilyss pointed downward with both hands, indicating her pristine thighs. “See, the stockings.”
“You took them off yourself,” Lyle replied.
Lilyss blushed and hesitated for a moment.
“Teacher… do you happen to… like my stockings?”
A rather peculiar inquiry, indeed. However, it did pique her excitement.
Lyle was taken aback. “How did you… why would you even think that?”
Lilyss reiterated, “Before, Teacher, you used to look at my legs quite often. So, if I don’t wear stockings today, you won’t look anymore?”
Lyle fell silent.
Lyle, caught red-handed, responded earnestly, “Lilyss, it seems you have yet to grasp the concept of fundamental logic.”
“Huh?” Lilyss questioned.
“One must perceive issues beyond surface appearances and delve into their essence,” Lyle explained.
Blushing, Lilyss asked, “So… does that mean Teacher doesn’t have an affinity for my stockings, but simply has a fondness for stockings in general?”
Goodness! She actually guessed it correctly!
“Do not be misled by appearances,” Lyle advised, extending a finger. “In truth, stockings have absolutely no relevance.”
Lilyss responded, “Hmm… I don’t quite understand.”
Lyle continued, “Take your time. There was once a monkey who, at the beginning of his apprenticeship, was just as perplexed as you.”
“A monkey? What happened to him later?”
Lyle began, “Later—”
Lyle paused for a moment and then continued, “Later, it snuck into the master’s bedroom one night and finally learned the secret of immortality.”
Lilyss responded with a puzzled look, “…”
“Just kidding,” Lyle chuckled.
“Lilyss, since I’ve had your breakfast, let me remind you about your succubus roommate.”
“Sue? Has Teacher met her?” Lilyss inquired.
Lilyss replied coyly, “Isn’t she quite beautiful?”
“Yes,” Lyle acknowledged.
Lyle stirred the bowl of porridge with a spoon and spoke, “The tenth level of Ysgard is a vast realm cloaked in thick misty forests, where there are no priests for purification and banishment. If that succubus dares to venture in, you will never see her again.”
Lilyss was momentarily perplexed. “What do you mean?”
“It’s a certain death, no doubt about it. By the way, she’s currently on the ninth level,” Lyle added.
While Lyle could offer some assistance, it was only a temporary solution. Lilyss would still face peril as she continued her descent into the depths of Ysgard’s underground city.
The progression in the city held many intriguing elements, such as floating boats controlled by mages, mists that could only be purified by priests, and ever-shifting mazes navigable only by scholars.
Entering alone would indeed be a death sentence, and Lyle had temporarily lost interest in delving further into the underground city.
Lilyss’s face had paled.
In truth, the cohabitation of an elf and a succubus was inherently absurd. Elves revered nature, while succubi reveled in decadence. However, Sue was unlike ordinary succubi. She was Lilyss’s dearest friend.
The elven maiden burst into the room in a state of panic, only to find Sue sitting by the window, basking in the sunlight. The sunlight cast a radiant glow on her cheeks, replete with collagen. Succubi were, after all, a naturally beautiful breed, with their signature silver hair and crimson irises. Aside from the tail and the fine black lines beneath her eyelids, there were few distinctions from humans.
“Lilyss, all the earnings from this venture are for you,” Sue said as she retrieved a small pouch from beneath her pillow, containing roughly thirty gold coins. The ninth level was a vast graveyard, teeming with wraiths and skeletons.
For adventurers, thirty gold coins might not be considered much, but it was a price Sue had paid with her life.
Lilyss’s gaze lingered on the bandages around Sue’s legs.
“Are you… are you planning to enter the underground city again?” Lilyss asked in concern.
Sue smiled faintly. “Yes, I am. What’s the matter?”
It was only in Lilyss’s presence that this vigilant succubus softened.
“But Teacher said you would die in the underground city!” Lilyss implored.
“Teacher?” Sue inquired.
“Mr. Lyle, he’s a top scholar who reached the pinnacle of the forty-fourth level,” Lilyss anxiously reiterated Lyle’s words.
The forty-fourth level… Setting aside the legendary adventuring parties, reaching the forty-fourth level was already a remarkable achievement. In Sue’s mind, the image of the man from last night resurfaced. With just one glance, he had discerned the contamination on her leg from the ninth level graveyard. He certainly seemed like a formidable individual. So why did he deny being a scholar?
“Lilyss, don’t worry about me,” Sue reassured, gently stroking her golden hair. “But I must ask, why did you bring a man here and call him your teacher?”
In the past, Lilyss often complained about the various people she encountered during her work.
Lilyss blushed slightly, feeling embarrassed. She had always regarded Sue as an older sister, and now she wasn’t quite sure how to respond.
“He’s quite skilled,” Lilyss finally admitted.
“I know,” Sue affirmed with determination.
“But you must understand, human greed knows no bounds. He surely wants something from you.”
“At first, I just wanted to improve my life skills, but then I realized that Teacher is really kind. He never gets annoyed with me, no matter how silly my questions are,” Lilyss explained.
Lilyss scratched her ear, feeling quite embarrassed.
“And, well… it seems like I’m getting a free ride from Teacher. But honestly, I’m not sure if just calling him ‘Teacher’ qualifies me to learn his knowledge… I’m quite troubled by this.”
“Knowledge?” Sue was somewhat surprised.
Elves possessed the blessing of nature, and they had a keen intuition about human hearts. However, when Lilyss spoke of Mr. Lyle, her ears turned red.
Among the elves, blushing ears when mentioning a man’s name was a sign of falling for someone.
Sue fell into a brief silence.
Even though that man had saved her just last night, Sue, due to her upbringing, didn’t entirely trust humans. Especially ones who appeared mild-mannered…
Sue patted Lilyss’s head. “Don’t trust others too easily, you foolish girl. Your naiveté will get you into trouble.”
Lilyss stuck out her tongue. “I know! Why don’t you join me in making a living as a professional?”
Sue smiled. “Lilyss, do you know what I really want?”
Lilyss fell silent. Although Sue was a succubus, she didn’t want to be looked down upon. But finding a team for Sue? Was it really that simple?
Adventurers tend to be prideful, to the point where even Mr. Lyle might be considered a “failure.” And Sue wasn’t just a succubus; she was also a self-taught swordswoman.
No one would be willing to team up with her.
