Chapter 05
Pei Jiuzhi admitted that his aura attached to the blue bird was indeed a little weaker.
But he really wasn’t dying.
He flew up from Wu Su’s shoulder unsteadily, his wings vibrating.
Wusu thought that this little guy was still quite strong, so she went back to the bucket, picked up the rag, and continued to work.
“If you have anything you want to do, you can tell me.”
Wu Su’s voice is soft, not because of her gentle temperament, but because of her natural voice.
The night of the banquet, the incense maker had also stayed to rest in Prince Jing’s mansion, but when he woke up the next day, the incense maker had disappeared.
Pei Jiuzhi couldn’t be sure whether Prince Jing knew about it, so when he ordered people to investigate, they always made unannounced inspections.
He glanced at Wu Su who was working, and determined that she was an ordinary maid.
For some reason, he thought of the girl from that night again.
The blue bird raised its small wings, and Pei Jiuzhi covered his head with them.
Since the blue bird is a talisman paper transformed by using his own aura, when he blushed, a blush would appear on the head of the paper bird.
Wu Su saw that the little blue bird in front of her suddenly covered its head with its wings, she stepped forward curiously, and pushed its wings away.
She saw that two pinches of feathers beside the blue bird’s beak had turned red, which looked a bit like the exotic foreign birds raised in Prince Jing’s garden..
Wu Su remembered the name of one of the birds, the cockatiel…with a red face and an interesting appearance.
That unusual bird could not adapt to the climate, and did not live long in Prince Jing’s mansion. Wu Su knew that its dying wish was to be able to enjoy a few of the nuts brought back as a tribute from foreign countries.
She bought a bag of those nuts with her monthly salary, but before the bird was able to eat them all, it died of illness, and Wu Su took away its dying energy.
Wu Su had eaten the leftover nuts by herself. They tasted good, but they were expensive. Anyway, she would not buy them for herself.
“If you have anything you want to do, you can tell me, in exchange…” Before Wu Su finished speaking, the blue bird flew away.
Pei Jiuzhi decided that it would be embarrassing to show his real appearance in front of outsiders, so he flew away to get down to business.
The night of the banquet, Wu Su had wasted a lot of energy.
She heard that monsters and humans were able to practise cultivating their aura. They can replenish the energy in their bodies at any time by absorbing the aura from the outside world, so as to ensure that they can use spells at any time.
But she can’t. She knows that she can absorb infinite yin and yang energy.
But these energies are stored in her body, and once they are used up, they will be gone.
Her strength depends on how much energy is left in her body.
Wu Su still decided to win over the little blue bird. If she didn’t absorb enough yin and yang energy, she wouldn’t even be able to maintain her human form.
She put the rag back into the bucket, temporarily put down the work at hand, and followed the blue bird’s aura.
Pei Jiuzhi arrived at the guest courtyard where the incense maker stayed – Xu Ling sent someone to check it out before, but they didn’t find any clues.
The incense maker they caught was not the handsome man who appeared at the banquet that night.
The real incense maker has a big beard, speaks broken Yun Guo dialect, and asked the Yundu guards why he has been arrested.
Pei Jiuzhi circled around the perfume maker’s room.
Although he didn’t cultivate, he was born with a keen ability to sense auras.
In the corner of the house, he found a faint trace of evil.
He flew towards the evil spirit and observed it carefully.
At this time, the door of the room opened with a “squeak”.
Wusu carried a bucket in one hand and a broom in the other, and entered the yard without encountering any obstacles along the way.
This is a little trick that she had discovered in Prince Jing’s mansion.
As long as she is dressed as a maid, she can just act as if she is coming here as a cleaner.
This way, there is no place in Prince Jing’s mansion that she cannot go to.
Wu Su took out a feather duster and dusted off the screen in the house.
She tilted her head and looked at the blue bird squatting in the corner.
“I haven’t finished talking to you just now.”
Wu Su spoke again, she licked her lips, and said seriously, “I’m a little hungry.”
Pei Jiuzhi felt that her tone was a little familiar – blunt, rough, and cautious.
He couldn’t recognize the girl from that night by her voice, because the Qianyan Pill would also change her voice, covering a plain human voice with consistent sweetness.
Wu Su’s own voice is not sweet, but soft and ethereal.
“You can tell me what you want.” Wu Su’s voice was as calm as ever.
Pei Jiuzhi thought, this should be a little girl overflowing with love.
But since she was a maid in Prince Jing’s mansion, she might know about that girl.
Since she insisted on helping him, he wouldn’t refuse..
Pei Jiuzhi activated the talisman paper, causing the blue bird to change its form, shifting to his own human form.
A tall man in white clothes appeared in front of Wu Su.
He was wearing the pure white ceremonial robe used when offering sacrifices to the heavens. The hem of the clothes was decorated with gold thread and embroidered with the sun, moon and stars.
In the bright afternoon sun, his eyebrows and eyes were dignified, his face was untainted and handsome, like a god, and his whole body was shining.
Wu Su squinted at him, but didn’t react for a moment. She wasn’t afraid, she was trying to understand why the blue bird in front of her had changed its appearance.
Is it a spell? But this blue bird was about to die, how can it change like this?
“Don’t be afraid, this is a simple human spell. Let me ask you a few questions.” Seeing Wu Su standing there in a daze, Pei Jiuzhi spoke first.
His voice was like a clear mountain stream, gentle and deep, with a faint sense of alienation and dignity.
“I don’t know.” Wu Su replied immediately.
She lowered her head and hurriedly packed her things.
If it’s a human being, forget it, humans… especially men, they are very difficult to deal with.
She once found a dying beggar under a bridge not far from Prince Jing’s mansion, and his dying wish was to marry a concubine.
Wu Su ran away after hearing this, she couldn’t do this.
“Didn’t you just say you wanted to help me?” Pei Jiuzhi tried to stop her.
Wu Su thought bitterly “Who knew you could change into a person?”, but the words have already been spoken, so it is difficult for her to refuse.
Holding the feather duster in her arms, she slowly turned her head and stared at Pei Jiuzhi.
“You ask.” Wu Su replied softly, not wanting to reveal the secret that she was a demon.
After Pei Jiuzhi spoke, he acted as if this was his own room, and poured a cup of warm tea, handing it to Wusu.
Wu Su didn’t refuse, taking the hot tea and holding it in both hands, waiting for him to ask his questions.
“A few days ago, a distinguished guest came to Prince Jing’s mansion, right?”
“Right.”
“Did you come across a girl who came back late?”
Wu Su was startled, her heart punded with fright. She thought it was over, the stewards had sent someone to investigate.
She shook her head: “I don’t know.”
After hearing Pei Jiuzhi speak a few words, she felt that the man’s voice was a bit familiar, but she couldn’t remember the specifics.
She generally does not deliberately remember someone’s voice or aura.
Pei Jiuzhi glanced at her with raised eyebrows. “Are you nervous?”
“You are a nobleman.” Wu Su could tell from his attire that his status was not low.
She never cared about the affairs of the master’s family, she only knew not to offend those noble people.
“I am Prince Jing’s younger brother, and I am the youngest in the clan.” Pei Jiuzhi explained his identity. “You don’t need to say anything about my coming to Prince Jing’s mansion.”
Wu Su calculated carefully. The servants in Prince Jing’s mansion all referred to Prince Jing as “Fourth Highness”.
This younger brother of Prince Jing was ranked last in the family, but she didn’t know what number it was.
But if he is the youngest one, if she called them Little Highness, that should be about right.
So Wu Su bowed and replied calmly: “Little Highness.”
When Pei Jiuzhi heard this, he was stunned for a moment. Only when he was young, would someone call him “Little Highness”.
Later, when he grew up, the people around him were afraid of him, so they all called him the polite “Ninth Highness”.
He didn’t correct Wu Su, but said in a cold voice, “Did you go to the banquet at Guanlan Pavilion of Prince Jing’s Mansion?”
“No.” Wu Su replied confidently, “Replying to Your Highness, I was resting that day and was not on duty.”
Pei Jiuzhi glanced at her and stopped talking to her. He was ready to get back to his own business.
The talisman paper that turned into the appearance of his body changed again, into the blue bird that was easy to move, and he continued to investigate the evil spirit.
“Your Highness, it’s dirty there.” Wu Su stepped forward and cleaned the cobwebs in the corners with a feather duster.
She couldn’t sense the evil spirit hidden there.
The evil spirit was not dissipated by Wu Su’s actions, so Pei Jiuzhi continued to observe.
Wu Su pretended to clean up, then left with her bucket in disappointment.
After following it this far, it turned out that the bird was a human being, and it was a person who came secretly to investigate her.
When Wu Su returned to clean the yard, it was already late, so she continued to work.
She had to finish her work before going back, otherwise, she would be punished by the steward.
As expected, Steward Lu came to check at night. He never looked at the booklet on duty.
Whoever is doing the work there, he assumes that it is their task.
“Wu Su, it’s so late, you haven’t finished yet?” Steward Lu looked at Wu Su sternly and spoke in a deep voice.
He was kind to Wu Su because Wu Su was obedient and diligent in doing things, but he didn’t expect Wu Su to be so lazy today.
“Steward Lu, please wait a little longer, I’ll finish wiping the chairs in the room.” Wu Su said as she poked her head out of the room.
“Go back when you’re done, and if you’re so lazy in the future, you don’t have to work here.” Steward Lu frowned at Wu Su.
Wu Su bowed in response without feeling wronged, finished the work, and returned to the courtyard where she lived.
Because of the ongoing ceremony of offering sacrifices to heaven, the clouds are very lively during this time.
Wei Li and Li Meng were in a playful mood, and had gone out early to watch the parade of lanterns.
When Wu Su came back, they hadn’t returned home yet, so Wu Su missed the meals that were cooked by the dining room.
She didn’t need to eat human food, so she just stayed in the yard in a daze.
While staring into space, she sensed a weak energy again, and thought that some small animal was about to die.
She followed the aura and came all the way to the outside of Steward Lu’s study.
Wu Su didn’t dare to go in at first, but she really wanted to gather some energy, so she gritted her teeth and decided to go in.
She was not willing to use her strength to fly in, and was about to climb over the wall through the window of the study.
But her body was really not good at moving, and she fell beside the window as soon as she rolled in.
Wu Su leaned against the wall, cleared her throat before she was able to stand up, and spoke. “You seem to be dying, so, do you have any—” wishes?
She raised her head and looked at the place where the weak energy was coming from, and the words suddenly stopped.
Wu Su saw the little blue bird again, and he tilted his head to look at her, his eyes full of indifference.
Under his feet lay the booklet used by the Steward Lu to record the duty roster.
